I love perl, but I am strongly convinced that strong typing is mandatory for code maintainability. e70838@gmail.com

reacweb··on House cleaners find two of the first desktop PCs in random boxes
maybe a confusion because 16 kilo bits is 2 kilo bytes.
reacweb··on SQLite-Web: Web-based SQLite database browser written in Python
hello, at work, I am not admin. I have developed a small flask site using sqlite. Always using commandline was painful. I have considered phpliteadmin, but this requires many tasks for installation. My boss would not understand that I spend half a day on this. I have discovered SQLite-web today. It took me less than a minute to use it. This is exactly what I was looking for.
reacweb··on Is Math Real?
IMHO, in order to be able to speak about these subjects, we must either be a mathematician, or have read logicomix (http://www.logicomix.com). It is the easiest book to read. Another usefull one is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6del,_Escher,_Bach
reacweb··on FAA authorizes Zipline to deliver commercial packages using drones
The existence of migratory birds proves that the loss of energy due to the Earth's gravitational pull is not so catastrophic. A vehicle in motion also loses energy because of the friction of the wheels. Above a certain speed, air friction becomes the most significant loss. The comparison of the energy balance of a vehicle on the road compared with a vehicle in the air is not as clear-cut. Vehicles on wheels are much heavier and require infrastructure (roads) that must be taken into account.
reacweb··on B612 Font Family
I always put a space after a comma. Never after a fullstop. Coding rules improve readability.
reacweb··on B612 Font Family
Yes. 0 (not slashed) is ambiguous only in fields that accept also letters.
reacweb··on Someone needs to save the Internet Archives from the lawyers and I have an idea
before http (ncsa mosaic is march 1993), I was using gopher, newsgroups and xarchie. When you saw a reference to a program in a newsgroup, it was often easy with xarchie to find a public ftp mirror where you could download it. I remember reading CERT advisories on gopher and having noticed that at my school, the vulnerable command xloadmodule was present (sunOS 4.3). I warned the admin and after 15 days of no reaction and no answer, I became root of all the servers. Good old days ;-)
reacweb··on The Bitter Lesson (2019) [pdf]
I finished my studies in 1993. Artificial intelligence was my major and I had done a study on programming the game of Go (a review of research state). At that time, the success of brute force for chess had caused much disillusionment in the AI world, which had hoped to see a drosophila. The transfer of this hope to the game of go was present in numerous publications. Even if it doesn't show up very well in a Google search, there are plenty of allusions in articles about programming the game of Go. Since the creation of go language, it is more difficult to find.
reacweb··on The Bitter Lesson (2019) [pdf]
Go has been described as the drosophila of AI. Once a program will know how to play go, we'll be able to make more general artificial intelligences. This is exactly what has happened with alphago and chatgpt. We're not repeating the same thing that happened with chess, but we are past the singularity. Recent advances in AI are lighting up the very nature of intelligence. Our memory and our brain are a machine for predicting the future. It's very similar to what recent models do. Alphagozero has rediscovered the history of chess openings in the same order as humans. We are no longer discovering simple new algorithms supported by machine advances, but architecting predictive systems based on guided learning. When we developed the algorithm for playing chess, the possibilities for generalization were limited. With these new architectures, new possibilities are appearing every day. IMHO, the predictions were true: since alphago, we've entered a new world.
reacweb··on Use multiple Git SSH identities on a single computer
In my .ssh/config, I have a section

    Host github_as_pulp
      Hostname github.com
      User git
      IdentityFile ~/.ssh/pulp.../id_rsa
      IdentitiesOnly yes
I just need to replace github.com by github_as_pulp on my clone command to use my second github account. As it remains in .git/config, it matches automatically when I cd between repositories.

In another script, I have GIT_SSH_COMMAND="ssh -i /.../.ssh/id_rsa -F /dev/null" git archive --remote=git@bor...fr:ace/docsite.git master | tar xp docsiteapp

git and ssh are so versatile. I think that a little documentation is better than a new tool.

reacweb··on Two years of teaching high school CS
The author had two years of experience, during which he saw things that surprised him. He didn't say he was a know-it-all or that others taught badly. He wasn't very satisfied with his own results. He decided to try something different. I have not seen arrogance.
reacweb··on Scratch is the world’s largest coding community for children
A sprite can create clones; There are variables that can be bounded to clones. This gives similitudes with object programming. Scratch is event oriented and involves concurrent execution of many tasks. This is not the imperative style of our youth, but it may be a better fit for modern programming.

Despite the apparent simplicity, you can develop very advanced game mechanism. The limitations occur when you want to give a professional finish. It is meant for children, but it is a pleasure also for the "parent teacher" because it allows to teach advanced ideas.

reacweb··on ChatGPT is now finding bugs in databases
They say what it is: "This is a free research preview. Our goal is to get external feedback in order to improve our systems and make them safer."

It is not a product. They open it so that public can contribute to help them.

They do not say the aim of this research.

reacweb··on Ask HN: I just want to have fun programming again
I give remote math courses (GoStudent 4h per week). I also have a student in computer science. She sends me her lessons and I explain to her what she didn't understand. I help her to do her lab work. If a subject doesn't suit me, I tell her. The level on the theoretical courses is excellent. To explain something, you have to know the subject well. This allows me to progress on all subjects at a very fast pace without spending much time (it is in addition to my usual work).
reacweb··on Show HN: Generate commit messages using GPT-3
I would say the opposite. The manager who receives the PR (merge request in gitlab) needs to know what has changed (if it is not obvious from the diff) to assess the change before accepting it. He has to know what has changed, for example to decide which non regression tests to performe.

The final user of the software will receive a changelog (a list of commit messages) that shall identify the bugs that have been fixed and the new user requirements that have been added. He needs to know why the code has changed to know what he has to do.

reacweb··on Seven years on, what do we know about the disappearance of flight MH370? (2021)
The person who bought the chickens told me that battery chickens were not suitable because the bones were too soft. Farm chickens were needed. The farmer never knew what the chickens were for.
reacweb··on Ask HN: Why are toggle switches replacing checkboxes? Isn't on/off less obvious?
Maybe we should use toggle switch only when the effect is immediately visible.

reacweb··on Beyond Functional Programming: The Verse Programming Language [pdf]
I was suspicious of javascript where number replaces int and double. The fail in verse is a way to replace boolean and null values. I think it is the direction of evolution.

reacweb··on Why A4? – The Mathematical Beauty of Paper Size
For the tea preparation, we shall use hot water below 100°C. french site: https://www.fauchon.com/fr/mag/conseils/quelle-temperature-d...
reacweb··on Why A4? – The Mathematical Beauty of Paper Size
Temperature near 0°C is very important when we travel (meteo, ...). Temperature near 100°C is important when we cook (eggs, pasta, rice).

We can leave hands in water at 50°C. Above, it slightly start to cause burns.

This is a range that make a lot of sense IMHO.

reacweb··on A History of Lua (2001)
I have used Ada during 8 years (3 years as student, 5 years work). The failure of Ada is the idea that "development of reusable libraries is left as an exercise for the developper". Standardisation of libraries was very slow and/or incomplete.

reacweb··on The need for quantum computers remains small
At that time QL Sinclair was a loser. A good computer that never got programs. It was the computer of Lius Torwalds and the reason he had to write himself programs. Without QL Sinclair, we may never had Linux.

At my work, I was present when the research on ASAS (https://skybrary.aero/articles/airborne-separation-assurance...) led to the idea of PMS (https://www.eurocontrol.int/sites/default/files/2021-05/euro...).

Never underestimate serendipity

reacweb··on DRY is an over-rated programming principle?
IMO, DRY is the second principle, the first one is KISS. It is preferable to repeat ourself if that contributes to simplicity and ease of maintenance. My third principle is that there is only three principles.
reacweb··on Where are all the crypto use cases?
I do not think people should confuse minitel rose (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minitel_rose) with prostitution. In one case, the victim is the prostitute, in the other case, it is the client.

I did it a long time ago. Regularly, I monitor to see the new packages. I will redo it as soon as it includes chromium (and systemd).
