rdrey··on The Old Pirate Bay
Thanks for the reply. This sounds a little like the page-rank algorithm. :)
rdrey··on Dissent – Accountable anonymous group communication
Thanks, this seems to be a great next step after reading the Dining Cryptographers Problem [1]! Any recommendations for papers that describe this specific implementation?

rdrey··on Dissent – Accountable anonymous group communication
I'm impressed by the number of papers already written about this. Which one is the 'canonical' paper to read first?
rdrey··on The Old Pirate Bay
I've been thinking about this problem, too. (Reputation in a decentralised & anonymous web.) What would stop someone from creating fake users? They could easily form a realistic 'social network' over time, giving them some legitimacy. Together a large number of fake users can defeat any form of voting / quality control.

I find this stuff very interesting, let me know if I'm missing an obvious approach.

rdrey··on The Book of Life
I've bookmarked this, since my CompSci education was very light on humanities and especially the 'Curriculum' chapter seems valuable to me. Would be even better if they had .mobi/.epub download links!
rdrey··on The Book of Life
Agreed, the navigation for sub-chapters shouldn't be so hidden by default. Alternatively a 'next' button to take the reader to the next sub-chapter would be great.
rdrey··on Pinc: Oculus Rift for the iPhone
I would like to understand what advantage their ring-controllers offer over a wide-angle Leap Motion. Text input by pinching two fingers together seems a bit clumsy, for example.
rdrey··on Launching in 2015: A Certificate Authority to Encrypt the Entire Web
I'm sure they'd support "manual setup". Not many sites would opt into running their software agent (yet). I'm expecting the client to come with a lot more benefits than "simple setup", though.
rdrey··on Foobar
I would agree, if this was the only method of getting job offers from Google. But since the "traditional" methods via the Careers page, recruiters, etc, are all still perfectly available, this doesn't bother me at all.
rdrey··on Amazon Echo
I think the only solution is to develop "personal AI" that runs on personal hardware... or an anonymous AI running 'in the cloud' but paid with cryptocurrency. Hopefully we'll be able to control what runs locally and what gets farmed out to the cloud on a more granular level one day.
rdrey··on Let's Talk About Beacons
They can only be used as "micro-surveillance tools" once you install an app that shares your proximity to a beacon with a remote server... and by installing a 'malicious' app you've already lost.
rdrey··on Countries where Americans can study at universities, in English, for free
Yup. I think part of the problem is that Americans group together "Universities", "Colleges" and "schools" as "schools". In the rest of the world you leave "school" after High School and make a conscious decision to go to a college or to university. It's pretty clear that they provide different syllabi.
rdrey··on Kaya: Declarative Reactive
I'd like to see how this differs from what Chris Granger's Eve[0] will be one day.

His description of Eve is still very vague.

rdrey··on With genetic testing, I gave my parents the gift of divorce
Thanks, yeah, that's pretty cool. I just watched a Youtube video on how to export raw data from 23AndMe and search for things on SNPedia. As long as 23andMe keeps the export option around I won't be spending a lot more for a kit from ebay. :D
rdrey··on With genetic testing, I gave my parents the gift of divorce
That's a great idea. I didn't know older kits were for sale. I'm 10x more interested in the health information than my ancestry!
rdrey··on Terms every aspiring entrepreneur should know
At this point I would typically google, but let me ask: I have never heard of Okidata or Brother. Could you explain how this thread reminded you of this conversation and could you describe Okidata and Brother, please?
rdrey··on This Man Has Nothing to Hide – Not Even His Email Password
I think you're overestimating the effect of Glass, since taking pictures and recording video is still a conscious decision. (Except when someone publishes the inevitable life-blogging app that captures a shot every few minutes. Even then sharing with the public (via Google) is still a conscious decision - sharing with Google & the NSA isn't of course. Luckily batteries are still a limiting factor.)
rdrey··on Instagram iOS session hijack
The gist doesn't show how to get your network card into monitor/promiscuous mode.

EDIT: I'm not sure -In work with default drivers, but I'll test with my private Mac at home later.

rdrey··on How Hackers Hid a Money-Mining Botnet in Amazon’s Cloud
I believe that AWS account creation requires unique emails & card numbers, but I'm not sure. There is definitely a telephone call with voice PIN, so I highly doubt that they used AWS accounts directly.

I think the "Amazon" spin in the title is from many other services running atop of EC2 and effectively reselling EC2 instances or access to VMs that run on EC2. They could more easily create accounts with these services and technically still run "within Amazon's cloud".

rdrey··on Filecoin – Data storage network and crypto-currency based on Bitcoin
The way I understand it, Get'ing the data also publishes it to existing miners, so they can start storing it if it's a piece with a high reward value. The TTL is decreased by the Get operation, though. By understanding how valuable your data is you can choose a time to Put it again (while reward/TTL > market rate) with a new reward attached. Obviously that reward/TTL should be higher than the last one to buy you a bunch of safe Gets again.
rdrey··on The Slow Web
Looks like a very interesting social network.

BUT the presentation of the homepage felt too slow. Revealing a few words at a time quickly lost its appeal.

rdrey··on How I increased conversion on my checkout form by 60%
Yes, seeing volume numbers would be useful, but I don't need to calculate statistical significance to understand that their second form is much better. So I have no gripes with the "60% increased conversion" or "15% increase in conversion rate" statement.

Guessing game: I guess that the lock symbol and random GoDaddy SSL cert image were the most important factors.

rdrey··on Who am I: A mind reader (don't forget to view source)
I was also thinking of using it as a bookmarks site. :)
rdrey··on FixYT
A bit rough, but yeah. The 3rd world is not yet ready to do this much video, because of mobile data prices. Let's stick to the awesome plain text solutions & low bandwidth media for now. (Canvas, cached SVGs, bluetooth & wifi, etc...) If we stick to text and backwards compatible media we can solve all internet problems by tying phones to balloons.

We should aim to make rms proud, but choose MIT because that code is more easily reusable.

rdrey··on Show HN: Designing Web Applications
Ummm... might be my mistake, but I can't spot any indication of how long your book is.

I did quickly look through the sample and the book seems to be very useful, but I'd like some indication of how much of it there is. ;)

rdrey··on Ask HN: Know of a hacker in Cambridge or Boston who wants a bookstore?
Strange that this is the only other comment mentioning referral fees.
rdrey··on Ask HN: Know of a hacker in Cambridge or Boston who wants a bookstore?
I tend to walk into (South African) bookstores to buy Wired's UK edition and browse books for a while until I know what else I'd like to read.

At that point I write down the book's title and later download it for my Kindle. I've often thought that bookstores should have QR-codes with amazon referral links that make my purchases easier.

Sure, a referral isn't as much income as a physical book sale, but I really can't amass any more "real" books, since I want to stay mobile. I'm sure I'm not the only one using bookstores just for their coffee shop and easier browsing.

rdrey··on Writing node.js applications in C#
Thanks for the "pipe dream" link, I found the conference talk on youtube and enjoyed it a lot. The reusable code 'function' of node is still too non-obvious to achieve without the right mix of tools and this talk gave a nice intro for a solution.
