rdmuser··on Reddit will stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13th
Anyone have any recommendations for generalist discussion forums? I know some great topic focused ones and enjoy tildes and metafilter for generalist discussions but I'd love to know if there are some other solid ones out there.

RSS is how I follow stuff so this is the last straw for me though I'm been reducing my reddit use for a while now due to discussion quality issues caused by their social media style "modernization".

They've pivoted away from being a set of forums to being mostly just another social media site and steadily lost most of their previous appeals. And bot activity and other bad faith manipulations on the site certainly haven't helped.

I'd say I'm sad to see reddit go like this but it left a long time ago and all we're left with now is new reddit.

rdmuser··on Letterboxd Is Up for Sale, and A24, Sony and the New York Times Are Bidding
Oh is that a claude thing? Definitively a false positive in this case and I don't care much for ai in general. Pretty damn awkward that I might need to memorize ai text styles even though I don't use them so I don't accidentally write the same way as one of them.
rdmuser··on Letterboxd Is Up for Sale, and A24, Sony and the New York Times Are Bidding
Ah actually unfortunately I think I made a mistake there so I apologize for that. Should have double checked instead of speaking from memory. I believe I was thinking of The Little Mermaid change but it seems like that wasn't their film. Sorry!

rdmuser··on Letterboxd Is Up for Sale, and A24, Sony and the New York Times Are Bidding
Having such a high profile film rating site be potentially owned by a film studio has serious conflict of interest issues. Same goes for amazon buying imdb and they've already used that to adjust scores for at least one film they released because of bad reviews. I'm happy to see this get some attention here after my submission didn't because the potential implications of this purchase are big.

Edit: I believe I made an error re the claim imdb changed the score of at least one amazon owned film. See replies for more info. Apologies!

Haha well I suspect the world is safe from this fashion catching on.

Looks like someone also posted a bbc article about it about 5 hours before me. No real discussion there though.

rdmuser··on The President's Power to Pardon Friends and Allies Must End
I generally feel similar to you most of the time when both sides stuff comes up but in this case I think you may be projecting based on other times this has come up in bad faith ways. Their claim wasn't that everyone is doing it equally just that it has been appealing enough to Democrats that they would also probably want to keep it. My good faith reading on the comment you are replying to is that it isn't trying to make an argument that democrats use it similarly.

Yeah I'm at a point where I have a bookmark folder of status pages mostly for very large orgs because I've been using those pages relatively regularly. This is not something I felt the need for historically.

I'm essentially in the same boat but I do have to say Strange New worlds has had that old school trek charm personally.
rdmuser··on The Death of Shame Is Tearing Us Apart
Interesting I've been calling it sin signalling. It can also be a sort of power peacocking, "Look at me I'm so powerful I can get away with this vile thing." type stuff. It's not a modern creation but it's certainly popular with certain highly visible political clusters atm.
rdmuser··on Is Advertising Morally Justifiable?
Sadly there is a notable amount of posts to hn that get close to zero attention due to bad titling. Though at least the hn crowd doesn't favour miserably bait focused social media style titling as strongly.

That article is from 10 years ago and it was just a checkup after a call in and no penalty so it doesn't seem comparable. Even the child services people quoted in the article emphasize that about half of these checkups involve no further action or penalties including that case.

rdmuser··on Is your favorite plant-based milk good for the planet
I've enjoyed high protein ones more than common plant milks because they are a bit thicker. I usually get unsweetened versions of the basic protein versions you see in grocery stores. Iirc traditionally soy drinks tend to be a fair amount thicker than what the west tends to get with plants milks (and cow milk tbf) and that's something I can definitively get behind.

One thing I've noticed too is that chocolate plant milks tend to be a lot more chocolatey than grocery store milks which tend to feel watered down and kind of disappointing.

rdmuser··on Congratulations to the Winners of the 2026 Online Journalism Awards
I really enjoy checking out journalism awards. It's often a great way to both find new sites/orgs etc and also maybe run into some intriguing or deeper written stuff you may have overlooked. Checking for journalism awards for your region can really add to that appeal especially if you are outside the US and you feel a little drowned out by their news.
rdmuser··on The Death of Physical Media
There are a fair amount of open source games out there and some great lists but I mainly wanted to highlight with this comment that itch and steam both have ways to find them. Hell I was just playing one earlier to check out the new content (drl).

Steam has this handy curator: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/38475471-Libre-Open-S...

Itch has this filter: https://itch.io/games/tag-open-source

As a bonus here are some random non abandoned lists I found with quick search:

rdmuser··on The Overton Window of Food
I had similar frustrations and switched to getting ingredients for muesli and assembling it myself. Super hearty, tasty, not processed, adaptable to your mood/tastes/nutritional needs and cheaper than store bought cereal. I assemble it on the spot, it doesn't take much time and is a nice little ritual but you can also pre mix it if you want something quicker.
rdmuser··on BlogFlock
There are a few rss feed sharing/blogroll sites out there now but I liked how this one has a full feed for each list so you can see what each blogroll looks like in action instead of it just being a clunky list of individual links out to sites to click through. Plus you can follow other peoples lists through the site too.

Tbh I think there is a lot of room for improvement related qol and ease of browsing feed lists for sites like this and blogrolls in general but blogflock has been the one I've liked most so far after looking at a bunch over the years. Iirc I've seen people host their own blogrolls here and there with a visible feed similar to this site but I'm having a bit of trouble searching for the software they used.

rdmuser··on The Website Obesity Crisis (2015)
Personally the cure for most of that has been to have js off by default. It's certainly a bit clunky especially when you are first growing your list of allowed sites and third party connections but ultimately it kills off so many annoyances and improves performance enough that it has been 100% worth it for me. First it was noscript them I switched to ublock origins advanced mode.
rdmuser··on Select * from Internet.blogposts
Oh the opml blogroll map is pretty exciting! I occasionally try to browse around for these manually but they can be hard to explore for so having a big list is a big deal. I usually just do searches for them + use a scour.ing interest to find more. I'm excited to look at it more this weekend when I'm not so tired.

One thing I'd love to see with rss / ompl sharing sites is more ease of exploration. It feels a bit clunky browsing many of these feed sharing sites because you need to evaluate each feed by manually clicking through each one etc or worse you can only import the whole opml at once flooding your feeds. For example I've seen some sites with feeds directly showing posts as they come in for each persons feed list(s) so you can see what that batch of rss feeds looks like in action without clicking around much. There are some sites doing great work getting people to share their lists but I think there is room for qol improvements.

One site I've been liking that has feeds for each list and is trying to reduce friction on sharing is blogflock.com. You can also follow other peoples lists directly on the site too so they show up in your main feed. I believe I've also seen some people self host their blogroll on their personal sites with similar feeds but I'm having trouble finding that software atm.

rdmuser··on Hacker News in Uncompromised Detail
This isn't terribly interesting but I believe you actually need to pass 500 for it to be active. I sat at 500 for a bit the other day with this account and couldn't downvote but hitting 501 changed that.
rdmuser··on 5 years on, Afghan girls still barred from education under Taliban

rdmuser··on Old.reddit.com is now login only
New reddit is also login only for me. I'd already reduced my use a ton as quality of discussion went down and so many old comments and subforums got deleted but I guess this really is the end for me.

I've always thought of reddit as a "revolving forum" because it focused on regular turn over vs long term threads like traditional forums. I've been sad to see it try and fully shift away from forum appeals.

Currently hn, metafilter, tildes and some topic specific forums/discords plus a little searching online are meeting my needs but I'd love to hear what you folk have shifted to for places with forum appeals.

rdmuser··on Where did the old web go? We followed 657,607 links to find out
The old web doesn't necessarily mean the oldest web. 12-17 years ago was very much an older fairly different era of the web that's worth analyzing even if it's on the younger side of the old web. I can definitively sympathize with your reaction though, it doesn't feel like that era was that long ago yet.
rdmuser··on Trump has amassed staggering wealth in 'most openly corrupt' presidency
There is a good argument for barring anyone from being in a position of power like that who is too old to be around for the second half of FAFO. He has nothing to lose but the american people and their global neighbors very much do.
