rdgthree··on The effects on cognition of sleeping 4 hours per night for 12-14 days
Immensely frustrating how many people are citing his book in a thread about one of your own blog posts, of all places. I was so glad to see your post about it at the time, and this experiment is an interesting follow up.

"Why We Sleep" is everything wrong with "science" today, and as a person who also isn't a huge fan of sleeping, I'm desperate to understand the real drawbacks to a lack of sleep. That dumpster fire of a book has set back honest research on the subject by years.

Just venting, as I know you agree. Thanks again for your contributions to sanity.

rdgthree··on Getting Back to Work
Well said. I'm a huge fan of Elon and Tesla and am optimistic about their future, but Munger's approach here is incredibly reasonable. I would love to see Tesla succeed, but I also know that I'd hesitate quite a bit to bet billions of dollars on their success.
rdgthree··on Getting Back to Work
Elon plays fast and loose with his opinions in public discourse, but generally when Tesla makes an official move like this it seems to be more thoroughly considered by a larger group of people than just Elon. I have the same gut feeling that you seem to have when I first hear these stories, but the associated press releases seem to consistently have concrete foundations that I don't initially expect.

In this case, they point to their experience dealing with exactly this process in Shanghai, and running the Gigafactory over there for 3 months successfully since reboot. That gave me pause - they've seen this and dealt with it firsthand already, which isn't something nearly anyone commenting on this can say. Maybe they're lying, but that feels like a pretty serious unearned accusation.

I think everyone agrees that we should restart businesses if it's reasonable to, but it doesn't seem like anyone is evaluating what "reasonable" means outside of "what the local government is saying". And then you have to wonder why we're suddenly assuming the state/city government is competent in this case.

I don't know where I stand, but I know that I'm not assuming Tesla is in the wrong here. I know far less than they do and it would take a miracle to convince me that the local government is properly thoroughly evaluating the situation and making nuanced, reasonable decisions (as opposed to simply reacting to the political environment). It's increasingly difficult to figure out how to proceed, but at some point we have to decide that we're able to open businesses back up (with safety measures that we decide are adequate). It's scary, but we can't just wait around for a vaccine forever - it could be years out.

It's just a fundamentally hard problem.

rdgthree··on Getting Back to Work
Your comment and OP's comment are a bit silly given the context. Munger didn't say anything controversial here. He was asked a question about Elon and answered by saying he prefers less risk. He specifically pointed out that Elon shouldn't be underestimated while saying it.

Elon doesn't just like to take risks, he would probably agree with being described as "risk obsessed". If your investment strategy is risk aversion and stability, you should avoid Elon. That isn't an outdated perspective, nor is it arrogant in any way - Elon would probably agree with it. The last sentence was an exaggeration of his bias when evaluating any operator to drive his point home clearly.

It's fairly difficult to imagine that Charlie Munger thinks Elon Musk has just gotten lucky for his entire career, and unsurprisingly he isn't saying that in this example. I'm all for fairly criticizing out-of-touch arrogance, but I can't see it being the case here.

rdgthree··on Getting Back to Work
Taking this quote out of context is impressively dishonest. It would be incredibly inaccurate to describe Elon's history of winning big as "occasional", and for that same reason it would be incredibly surprising if Charlie Munger described Elon's career this way with no qualifiers.

Not surprisingly, he didn't. This quote is the end of a much more nuanced statement to conclude the point that he generally prefers to invest in operators who take less risk.

Regardless of your opinion on Elon, this sort of manipulation of reality damages the discourse. It's not helping anyone.

rdgthree··on A Critique of React Hooks Addendum
This was a great follow up. I completely agreed with the first post, and I couldn't help but think those critiquing it didn't quite understand what they were critiquing. It's rare that you're able to actually definitively prove that out, but these results are about as conclusive as it gets.
rdgthree··on Facebook iOS SDK Remotely Crashing Spotify, TikTok, Pinterest, Winno and More
Without staking my flag on either side of this argument, it's a bit silly to say "the only reason this stands out is because it affected so many people" as if that's a reasonable counter-argument.

The large amount of people affected reinforces your parent comment's argument. Something that has the potential to affect an immense amount of people should be treated with a relative amount of care. Writing crap code and pushing carelessly would be a far more significant failure of judgement if that code were in the Facebook SDK than if it were in Johnny's Hello World App.

It's also worth noting the difference between writing code with a minor change in behavior that when pushed to production causes an unexpected domino-effect of obfuscated cascading failures across multiple different services that eventually impacts an immense amount of people, vs. directly writing code that crashes on the client side and impacts an immense amount of people. This is the latter.

rdgthree··on Colleges at the breaking point, forcing ‘hard choices’ about education
Because I think the average four year bachelors degree has regressed to soft sciences taught by lackluster instructors with very little rigor. So no glamorization of blue collar work, it's just that a two year trade school is more transactional - if you graduate, you'll have learned a hard skill that you can earn money with. That used to be true for most four year degrees, now I'd guess it's only true for a minority.
rdgthree··on Colleges at the breaking point, forcing ‘hard choices’ about education
I'd say the value of the average four year bachelors degree today is less than the value of the average two year trade school, so the value might not be zero but it might as well be.

That being said, I think the assessment problem is real. I'm the founder of a small startup that very few people want to work for (relative to say, Google) and that means I can assess each candidate in careful/unorthodox (time-consuming) ways. Companies at Google scale have to assess thousands of candidates per month (week?) and they have to do it in a way that ensures they're beyond reproach with regard to discrimination.

Having a college degree means you're statistically more likely to know your stuff, period. Correlation or causation isn't material in this case. There would have to be a very good reason for any big company to start ignoring that reality.

Tricky problem. I'd imagine the only solution involves an actual replacement credential. Like a bar exam, but for "private" disciplines. Maybe Neuralink will sort out how to see if you actually have the necessary understandings in your brain.

rdgthree··on Do whatever you can't stop thinking about
For me, those side tracks are often closely related to a core goal, but still act as distractions that I have to avoid.

For example, my business is in the residential real estate industry. I think a lot about rent prices as a result. I have a pet theory that there's a bubble in the world of big building financing. I would love to spend weeks just digging into the data and trying to find out what's really going on, but that's not going to help my business succeed.

I resonate with what you said re: a sense of purpose. I think the way rental housing is done on the whole planet is a trainwreck, but a fixable one. I think it could improve the lives of millions of people if someone could shake off some dust and introduce some new ideas. It's huge and exciting.

I guess the fundamental problem is that there are many interesting and viable angles to solve the problem, but if you want to succeed, you really have to focus on a much smaller cohort of those angles (if not just one). So yeah, I don't think it's as simple as having a better sense of purpose unless your sense of purpose is extremely narrow in scope.

rdgthree··on Payroll startup Gusto raises $200M
Well to be fair to them, I think their benefits card provider is a white labeled product from the neolithic era.[0]

Normally I'd say no excuses, but it seems like this was a regulatory necessity if they wanted to provide benefits cards at all. I'm a founder as well, so I can understand the need to provide a significant feature in the short term, even if it sucks a bit.

Being a founder (especially in compliance) I think you could be a bit more forgiving on your stance. A bad experience with a third party benefits card sucks, but saying they "completely fucked you over" feels fairly extreme - especially if your payroll has otherwise been running smooth.

rdgthree··on Payroll startup Gusto raises $200M
Are you sure this isn't your employer's mistake?

With commuter benefits the employer has to manage everything themselves. If the benefit is a contribution it'll show up on your paystub, but your company needs to either reimburse you the amount (after you have already paid the commute cost personally) or provide you with a transit/benefits card. If it's a pre-tax deduction, it stays in the employer's bank account, again to reimburse you or provide a benefits card.[0]

It doesn't really make sense for this to work any other way. Commuter benefits are pre-tax, so if they just paid you the money outright it would be a pretty explicit violation of tax law. There needs to be a paper trail showing that the benefit money was spent on the actual benefit itself. I imagine their team might be confused by your questions.

I'm CTO of Flip (https://flip.lease), we handle a lot of rent payments each month.

I get the same question a lot. Most people could not imagine the amount of complexity that exists underneath the seemingly simple guise of paying rent. Just wanted to say I can sympathize and I respect what you've been able to do, specifically from the technical perspective. (We use Gusto and it's been absolutely fantastic)

Unrelated, my whole team was very impressed by the attention to detail in your rebrand. It's so difficult to transition the landing pages and internal product so seamlessly, again coming from the technical perspective. I imagine you're running a tight ship over there, and it shows.

Congrats on the raise!

Wow, this is huge information. Can you link your source?
rdgthree··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2017)
Usually backend engineers have some OSS work or side projects they can share. Even if that isn't the case, there is usually something they've done at work they can discuss, if it isn't the pure code.

We're not looking for engineers that purely do work for their employer and then turn it off when they head home. Since this will be our ~8th employee, they need to be ready to really dive into the work, and those people tend to have a portfolio. Of course, I'm open to people without one - there needs to be a stronger pitch than just a resume.

Hopefully that makes sense!

rdgthree··on Juno Drivers ‘Gett’ Only Pennies Following $200M Acquisition
“In a nutshell, we’re going to be nice. We’re going to be ethical. We’re going to be respectful of our drivers,” he said. In that talk, Marco said his partners planned to give drivers a stake in the company. In fact, it had suggested it would set aside 50 percent of the company’s founding shares for drivers, as we previously reported.

Initial reports on the deal indicated that all shares accumulated by drivers would be nullified in the acquisition

Another driver forwarded us a letter that offered $251 for 14,173 restricted shares, a value of roughly $0.02 per share. This post[0], shared on the UberPeople forum, shows an estimated value for restricted shares at $0.20 each, last July.

At least Uber isn't hiding behind some sign claiming to be ethical.

rdgthree··on Ending the cult of the CEO
Ballmer ruined the company, not turned it around. He took something amazing and tanked it. Nadella is the example here.
rdgthree··on Deleting Uber is the least you can do
I feel the same way - not because either side is necessarily wrong, but because these kind of articles are grossly simplified. Uber is not pure evil, or pure good.

Even the #DeleteUber hashtag originated from a misunderstanding: https://www.axios.com/uber-didnt-deserve-deleteuber-22258932...

Certainly the article about sexism in the workplace is deeply concerning, but that doesn't suddenly mean Uber is a force for pure evil in the world and has done no good for anyone. It means, like many organizations (especially ones that are growing aggressively), they have serious internal problems. Travis immediately responded to the article, and I have no doubt that he is against rampant sexism occurring in the company. What would be the motivation for him to allow it to continue happening?
