rdevsrex··on Mojo is a much better “Objective-C without the C” than Swift ever was
As a fan of the podcast, I give 0 shits what you think. Just don't watch instead of moaning about it.
rdevsrex··on Grass makes better ethanol than corn does (2008)
Who didn't already get that ethanol was about corn subsidies and not the environment?
rdevsrex··on The Rust I wanted had no future
Yeah I've been looking into Nim and I want to build something substantial in it and see how it performs and feels to write.
rdevsrex··on Building GitHub with Ruby on Rails
I use AdonisJs at work. Having used Rails and Laravel before it was a very easy jump.
rdevsrex··on We need a new economics of water as a common good
Exactly, I would prefer it if we decommodified water use with and regulate use base on sustainability needs. It would have prevented all these water companies like Nestle from stealing the water from various regions.
rdevsrex··on Hundreds of Thousands of Iraqis Were Killed in the War. One Was My Brother
It's not the same, but there are similarities. It's not like the US hasn't knowingly killed civilians before.

And speaking of the war in Ukraine, I truly believe the US provoked Russia. Of course, Russia is responsible for its war crimes, but the US and its allies are the ones who wanted to encircle Russia by expanding NATO eastwards, even after they promised not to.

There was a time when we could have made Russia an ally, but now they are an enemy and aligned with China.

Our politicians either are too stupid, too corrupt, or both.

rdevsrex··on Leaving China
I don't agree. Yes in one sense people are all the same. But differences in each country really do matter. As do cultural differences.

I grew up in the US but I've lived in South Africa for nearly 10 years. I've also lived in Switzerland and Mexico.

So I've seen enough of a range of how people live to know there are better and worse conditions. Maybe there is no true perfect country or culture, but there are definitely tradeoffs.

You might love the culture and hate the government, or love the government but hate the culture.

Like I love how friendly South Africans are, but my God the government is so corrupt. I love how the Swiss government works, but Swiss people aren't known for being easy to make friends with. God forbid you flush the toilet after 10pm.

So depending on what you are optimizing for, some places really are better than others.

rdevsrex··on Tons of uranium missing from Libyan site, IAEA tells member states
Because of Hillary Clinton. Kidding. Kind of.
rdevsrex··on Silicon Valley Bank unmasks the hypocrisy of libertarian tech bros
Well because it's true. It's beyond clear that the rich get bailed out. It's libertarianism on the way up, socialism on the way down, but only for the rich.

Would that we respond as fast to the needs of ordinary people as to SVB depositors.

rdevsrex··on South Korea to build world’s largest chip center in Seoul with $230B investment
Call me cynical, but I view the subsidies for these new US fabs as hedge against loosing production in Taiwan in the event of a war with China.

That small price delta will be nothing if that happens.

rdevsrex··on Georgia’s big new nuclear reactors could be the last built in the US
Everybody is talking about how expensive nuclear is, and how wind and solar is a much better option.

But that assumes we can actually mine all the copper, nickel, etc that we need. And do so without destroying fragile ecosystems and polluting regions where the mining is being done.

This was a great video about how dirty the copper mining in Chile is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNUbroQ2XZ4.

All I'm saying is, I don't think there are any free lunches to be had. To get off fossil fuels is going to be expensive whatever our energy mix is.

rdevsrex··on Georgia’s big new nuclear reactors could be the last built in the US
That's assuming we can keep up production in key materials, like copper, nickel, etc.

It takes a shit ton of water to process copper, often in places that don't have a lot of it like the Atacama region in Chile. To say nothing of the pollution that local residents face because of it.

rdevsrex··on Georgia’s big new nuclear reactors could be the last built in the US
Well the raw materials for renewables, like copper and rare earths, are quite dirty to produce, and often done in the global south, and a not insignificant amount was produced in Russia.

So there are a lot of costs that don't show up for the end user, and it's not a given that we'll be able to access the volume of material needed to transition to a clean energy future without nuclear energy in the mix.

rdevsrex··on Biden want's tougher cloud security
Key section that stood out to me:

Among other steps, the Biden administration recently said it will require cloud providers to verify the identity of their users to prevent foreign hackers from renting space on U.S. cloud servers.

rdevsrex··on Gluon, a high-performance IMAP library
This is pretty cool. Just the other day there was a thread about https://poste.io.

I definitely want to play around with it.

rdevsrex··on My mindfulness practice led me to meltdown (2021)
What OP describes sounds like the common bad trip with various psychedelics. Of course there are differences, but it's very easy to get yourself into a state of mind that you can't easily get out of for hours on end. Definitely not fun.
rdevsrex··on My mindfulness practice led me to meltdown (2021)
User name checks out.
rdevsrex··on Tesla Terminated Dozens in Response to New Union Campaign, Complaint Alleges
I'm not an ardent socialist, but seeing this stuff happen time after time, makes me want to take everything the capitalist class has.
rdevsrex··on Bing: “I will not harm you unless you harm me first”
May he rise.
rdevsrex··on Last Flight Out
Very cool!
rdevsrex··on Linode rebranded as Akamai’s cloud computing services
Exactly. Salesforce bought Heroku but kept the brand name.
rdevsrex··on Compact holographic sound fields enable rapid one-step assembly of matter in 3D
One more step on the road to programmable matter.
rdevsrex··on Ask HN: Whatever Happened To Freelancing?
I found my current job on Upwork, and after a couple of months we moved to a direct arrangement. Not ideal, but it can work.
rdevsrex··on The digital pound: A new form of money for households and businesses?
Maybe the banks don't tell competing banks how much you have, but since the Patriot Act, I wouldn't count on the government not knowing if they want to know.
rdevsrex··on Twitter restricted in Turkey in aftermath of earthquake
Maybe, but globalization is how China got industrialized so fast in the first place. Help your enemy get rich, and then watch as they push you off your place. Not a smart strategy either.
rdevsrex··on Stop the proposal on mass surveillance of the EU
Ahem, have you forgotten about the NSA spying on US citizens? Every government covets that power. It's a fantasy to assume they don't.
rdevsrex··on An astonishing regularity in student learning rate
I agree. As highly controversial as IQ is, it does measure something, and is correlated to certain outcomes.

I scanned the paper, but I don't recall if this was just K-12, or also higher ed, but I wonder if this result would fall apart in more complex subjects.

Also, no matter what the learning rate really is, if a student isn't interested in the subject, good luck getting them to learn much at all!

rdevsrex··on Pakistani gov degrades Wikipedia connections due to blasphemy
What's offensive to someone is just scholarship to another person.
rdevsrex··on Nim and Go programs identified by Carbon Black as malware on Windows
Nothing wrong on iterating on what came before.
rdevsrex··on Coinbase’s chief product officer will leave with a $105M payday
And how much is the average employee making? Honestly I'm down for making a law that says in order to pay execs more, they have to pay their workers more.

Even at a 50 to 1 ratio of worker to exec, they can still make more money but increase the wealth of the workers at the same time.
