rcchen··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2022)
Homeward | Designer, Data Engineer, Software Engineer | Austin, TX and San Mateo, CA (hybrid) | Full time

Homeward is a technology-enabled healthcare provider delivering quality, affordable and comprehensive care to rural America. Our innovative healthcare delivery model is purpose-built for rural America and directly addresses the issues that have historically limited access and quality of care for 60 million Americans.

We recently raised a $50 million series B from General Catalyst, ARCH Venture Partners, and Human Capital to tackle lack of healthcare access in rural America. We’re a small team of operators passionate about using technology for good. As an early member of our engineering team, you’ll work cross functionally with product, design, operations, and clinical teams and lead the design and development of our technical infrastructure. Your contributions will influence the Homeward product at a foundational level.

rcchen··on Boeing’s Homicides Will Give Way to Safety Reforms if Flyers Organize
There's a bit of a nuance here - his grandniece was killed in the Ethiopian 737 accident [1] so it's personal at some level for him.

rcchen··on Amazon announces candidate cities for HQ2
Oof unfortunate that Detroit missed the cut, wonder why that happened; they seemed reasonably competitive from an outsider's perspective.
rcchen··on Optimizing web servers for high throughput and low latency
> If you are going with AMD, EPYC has quite impressive performance.

Does this imply that Dropbox has started testing out EPYC metal?

rcchen··on Backblaze's Hard Drive Stats for Q2 2017
Now that the Phoenix DC is online, will there be geographical redundancy between Phoenix and NCal for Backblaze customers?
rcchen··on TypeScript support in Electron
it'll throw an error if a parameter is undefined, and https://github.com/Microsoft/TypeScript/issues/15333 which lands in the next version auto-suggests spelling corrections as well
rcchen··on How We Are Improving Performance
I wonder if their render service is still backed by racked Mac Pros (http://photos.imgix.com/racking-mac-pros). If so, considering the lack of updates around that machine for the last several years, I wonder if they are planning to remain with that solution.
rcchen··on Uber's Loss Exceeds $800M in Q3 on $1.7B in Net Revenue
There must be something else going on, because the authorization hold has been $1.25 for Lyft for as far as I've been using it.
rcchen··on Google Chrome Has Dropped Support for Windows XP, Vista, and Mac
*Mac OS X 10.6 - 10.8

Can we please fix the title? Seems pretty misleading

rcchen··on Facebook is closing Parse
Why? React and React Native are both pretty core to Facebook's main applications these days (all of Instagram is written in React, there's a smattering of components all over the main Facebook page, and multiple Facebook-written applications are written in React Native, including parts of the main Facebook app). In contrast, Parse was more of a dev-infrastructure product that didn't end up impacting developer relations as much as Facebook wanted it to (I'm guessing)
rcchen··on Atom 1.0
I would say that it's at 90+ percent feature parity with ST3; the only real downside is that the package/extension ecosystem is nowhere near as mature as with ST3 right now, but that looks like it is changing very quickly. In addition, ST3 is closed source vs. Atom is open source, and that alone could be a good reason for a number of people to switch.

My recommendation is to give Atom a chance, see if it fits into your workflow (whether it has native support for the languages/frameworks you work in, or if packages exist). If it works out, then you have a viable alternative to ST3 :)

rcchen··on Project Fi by Google
It switches between T-Mobile and Sprint.
rcchen··on CloudOn Joins Dropbox
Looks like they're grabbing up talent for a future Office suite competitor of sorts. Makes sense if they want to differentiate themselves as a cloud storage platform, but I do wonder how that would play into their current partnership with Microsoft as the sole "external provider" for the Office iOS apps.
rcchen··on SpaceX Sells 10% Stake to Google, Fidelity for $1B
One thing that needs to be considered is that SpaceX is operating in a space that has far higher risk for a (relatively) indeterminate reward right now. A single accident could severely damage the company's reputation and revenue stream, and I think their valuation might reflect this cautious approach to their business model.
rcchen··on Intro to Docker and how we use it at WriteLaTeX
Great presentation, it was very easy to follow and understand.

Quick question though: is the only reason for using Docker containers with LaTeX file compilation for providing isolation between documents? Isn't there a performance hit versus running file compilation directly on worker machines, perhaps with some sort of folder-based isolation (workers will only compile files in folders that the user has permissions to)?

rcchen··on A look at the 2014 Mac mini
My assumption was that these Macs were primarily used for automated headless testing of iOS applications; as a (relatively) cheap Mac that is able to run the simulator and whatnot, this could make sense.
rcchen··on A Raw Deal in Michigan
This was on Reddit a couple of days ago, it seems that the Tesla door handles are able to break through ice so you can still get into the car: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYXKY7fpHWA
rcchen··on Apple Mac Mini
So correct me if I'm wrong, but they appear to have done the same thing with the Mac Mini to achieve the lower price point as they did with the iMac earlier this year, by introducing a 1.4Ghz i5 model? I don't recall the base Mac Mini being as weak before...
rcchen··on Dual-touch smartphone design concept
The Motorola Backflip (http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_backflip-3079.php) actually had a touch pad in the back that could be used in the same way trackballs were used on Blackberries. It was pretty awful to use, though that might have been because it ran Android 1.6
rcchen··on T-Mobile backs Ubuntu smartphone
It won't shut down, it will just bill you at a rate of 10 cents for each additional minute used. I usually keep some extra money in my T-Mobile balance so this has never been an issue on the rare occasions I go over 100 minutes.
rcchen··on What's new in Android 4.3
It seems that only Nexus devices are getting the update today, and not the Samsung/HTC Play Edition phones. It will be interesting to see when those two devices get the update; in the meantime, not all Play devices are made equal?
rcchen··on Evasi0n iOS 6.x jailbreak
I just jailbroke my iPad 3 with it, works like a charm, on iOS 6.1

rcchen··on The Gmail app for iPhone and iPad: version 2.0
Just got it updated from the App Store app on iPad, it shows up in search results again too so I think thing have stabilized now.
rcchen··on Poll: What are your primary motivations for doing side projects?
Working on a side project definitely is more for an investment in myself, in that if I'm using my time to learn something that I find interesting and accomplish something that I find equally interesting, then it can only be beneficial for myself. Recently I've taken to using side projects to explore new (to me) stacks, with the latest being Flask.py with a Mongo DB in the back. In fact, the only downside is that sometimes I might forego my actual work (I'm looking at you, PSETs!) or sleep because I'm so into a project that I want to get it done.
rcchen··on Ratchet: Prototyping iPhone apps in simple HTML, CSS, and JS
This feels a lot more lightweight than jQuery mobile while retaining the look/functionality needed to work on a mobile web app. Does this seem like a suitable replacement for jQM for a basic mobile web application?
rcchen··on A Redditor about the problem with today's Silicon Valley startup community
At what point is a GMail plugin able to transform itself into a startup like Rapportive? A to-do list probably don't have a very big chance of changing the world, but a better one has the potential to impact a small subset of people who feel the same pain points as the founders. Probably not startup worthy, but the main point of a startup is really to take a problem and find a solution to it, and if these kids are addressing a real problem and making a calculated shot at a solution, then why not?
rcchen··on Windows 8 Pro Upgrade to cost $39.99
Apple has historically made its profit through selling hardware, investing into the software to make the hardware and software work well together but extracting negligible returns on software. What would pursuing this type of upgrade pricing mean for a company like Microsoft, which relies primarily on software for revenue?
rcchen··on Microsoft Introduces New "Surface" Tablet
I believe the 2100 likes is due to the fact that they basically took over the URL (http://www.microsoft.com/surface) from the Surface computing platform that they had been working on with Samsung, and the likes are probably residual (Facebook likes are linked to a URL)
