rblatz··on Blood oxygen monitoring returning to Apple Watch in the US
iPhone can control Apple TVs, and is able to detect which device you are nearest to and auto select it (if you have multiple)

Also all my TVs also have apps that function as a remote control.

Interestingly enough my main TV an LG has a remote that controls the tv using RF. I don’t even know if it would work with an IR blaster.

rblatz··on It's a DE9, not a DB9 (but we know what you mean)
If a contractor installed exactly what he asked for, an RJ45 jack which would be unusable for his needs he would have no grounds to stand on to demand it be corrected without paying more. By specifying the technically correct name as well as the colloquially recognized name he is being precise and accommodating.
rblatz··on Tuning the Prusa Core One
This was in response to a post about how to setup and calibrate and deal with Prusa Core One issues. The Bambu literally just runs a self calibration on first run, making the need for this sort of process unnecessary.

Maybe it’s not a big deal to do this on first setup, but clearly someone thought it was worth writing a blog post to explain to people.

rblatz··on Tuning the Prusa Core One
As someone that went from a janky Ender to a Bambu X1C, I think I can explain the differences. Is your hobby 3d printing? If so a machine that allows you more freedom to tinker and requires more hands on knowledge, but at a slightly lower price makes sense. If you use a 3d printer for your other hobbies, then something more appliance like that just works like the Bambu lines is probably a better fit.

I basically never 3d printed before, because every time I wanted to print I spent more time fiddling with the printer than I spent on my actual hobby. Now I spend almost no time thinking about the printer, and I use it almost daily.

I think both Prusa and Bambu have great printers and target different demographics, Bambu was a better fit for me and my needs, and I think a lot of people fall into the same general class as me. If you want a 3d printing appliance go with a Bambu, if you want to spend time customizing and upgrading and tinkering with a 3d printer go with another brand like Prusa.

rblatz··on RFK Jr.: HHS moves to restore public trust in vaccines
It's amazing that within a single person's lifetime we can completely as a society forget how horrible these diseases were, and why vaccination was so popular and transformative around the world. Truly a victim of their own success.
rblatz··on Trusting your own judgement on 'AI' is a risk
Why? This is a trash article that basically says "I don't care how much more productive you claim to be with AI, you are a faulty narrator and falling into a physiological trap. Any reports or experience on success with AI should be completely ignored. Don't even look at AI until the bigger smarter science people evaluate it for us simple folk."
rblatz··on Trusting your own judgement on 'AI' is a risk
The whole thing is basically you can't know anything, and personal experience can't be trusted. So we are all helpless until "Science" tells us what to do. Until then sit on your hands.

Where is the proof that Javascript is a better language than Typescript? How do you know if you should be writing in Java/Python/C#/Rust/etc? Probably should wait to create your startup lest you fall into a psychological trap. That is the ultimate conclusion of this article.

It's ok to learn and experiment with things, and to build up your own understanding of the world based on your lived experiences. You need to be open minded and reevaluate your positions as more formalized understandings become available, but to say it's too dangerous to use AI because science hasn't tested anything is absurd.

rblatz··on Don't watermark your legal PDFs with purple dragons in suits
If you were facing the death penalty would you pick a lawyer with purple hair and face tattoos to defend you?
rblatz··on Street address errors in Google Maps
Why don’t you name your road and assign a house number? Either just make it up, or to make it more official contact your local government and propose a name and numbering scheme for it.
rblatz··on There are two types of dishwasher people
We use pods, don’t mess with pre-rinse, dishes come out clean. Don’t worry about water temp. We do use jet dry otherwise the dishes come out wet.
rblatz··on Interviewing a software engineer who prepared with AI
I don’t employ leet code questions in my hiring process, but I do think they can provide value or signal.

If a candidate is taking the time to practice and master leetcode it does show the candidate is motivated, demonstrates their ability to learn and internalize knowledge, and to utilize that knowledge under pressure.

If those are things you want to screen for and have a high volume of talented candidates I can see a use for them.

rblatz··on Supervisors often prefer rule breakers, up to a point
Anecdotally I’ve heard from professional athletes that steroid use is actually liked by coaches because it gives them better control over the locker room. If someone becomes an issue in the locker room, guess who is getting randomly selected for testing without a heads up warning.
rblatz··on Sports supplement creatine makes no difference to muscle gains, trial finds
Studies show that sedentary men on steroids gain more muscle mass than active men that aren’t on steroids.

So you don’t always have to work for them, especially if you used a steroid like Tren which is 5x more anabolic than testosterone.

rblatz··on Everyone knows all the apps on your phone
Disabling zoom is so hostile, why not disable screen readers and put bollards on handicapped ramps while you are at it. It’s literally a middle finger to older people and people with vision issues. If you disable zoom I will not be using your website.
rblatz··on 2025 Tariff Impacts at Puget Systems
The only issue here is that companies need certainty the tariffs will be around for a while before they would take on the massive cost of on-shoring manufacturing.

Which is lacking in this current situation.

rblatz··on I won't connect my dishwasher to your cloud
Ubiquiti is software defined networking, so it needs software to configure it.
rblatz··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
Like being a member of the USB committee and help make USB-C a good standard with a reversible connector like they did with lightning?

Because they did that.

rblatz··on Why can't we screenshot frames from DRM-protected video on Apple devices?
Also I doubt the jar ever fills up, not many people in this thread seemed to be aware of this limitation until reading this post.
rblatz··on Penn to reduce graduate admissions, rescind acceptances amid research cuts
I worked at a large public university. The University had a large central IT team, but each college had its own independent IT team that managed their own computers, network, printers, and other technology. Each also had their own software dev teams and there was significant overlap an inefficiencies in this model.
rblatz··on Who needs a sneaker bot when AI can hallucinate a win for you?
The article doesn’t rule this out. Most of these emails are templated out in some 3rd party email service. It is extremely plausible that the author is unaware of the text email content.

If someone had a rejection email then we could check this. But

rblatz··on Beej's Guide to Git
Find your last entry before the rebase using the reflog and reset your local branch to that entry.

The work isn’t lost, it is sitting right there.

rblatz··on Beej's Guide to Git
The devs shouldn’t have access to prod credentials in the first place. That’s the real issue.
rblatz··on How to turn off Apple Intelligence
You’re concerned about your phone keeping data on your phone, that it derived from data on your phone? At that point I think you are so far outside of the norm as to be considered a fringe use case.
rblatz··on How to Run DeepSeek R1 671B Locally on a $2000 EPYC Server
This isn’t he best comment I’ve seen on HN, you should delete it, or stop gatekeeping.
rblatz··on Older adults disproportionately hindered by touch screen interfaces (2023)
You are greatly understating the value and improvement that these services brought. Especially around accessibility.

In the city I grew up in taking a taxi was basically not an option. You can now typically get a ride from Uber or Lyft within 10 minutes.

In the city I moved to for college there were plenty of Taxis but could take 30+ minutes for one to show up, or maybe it would never show up and you’d have to call another company and hope they would eventually send someone to you.

These are anecdotes, but the massive increase in for-hire rides after these companies were introduced does show that they did improve the experience and made for-hire rides more accessible and appealing.

rblatz··on Science YouTuber physicsgirl (Dianna Cowern) stands for the first time in 2 yrs
I was vaccinated and boosted, ended up catching covid 3x so far.
rblatz··on Former tech CEO suing to get the record of his arrest removed from the internet
The parent comment feels like a “Reddit” comment. It appears when taken at face value defamatory and potentially in violation of California law. It implies guilt and does not use words like allegedly for things that have not been proven.

This seems like an unwise post to make, and adds nothing to the discussion. It very well may also violate the rules of HN.

rblatz··on Dual-Link QR Code Generator
So just keep scanning repeatedly until it gets you to the right menu?

Wouldn’t it be easier to just have the link the QR code points to show a language picker?

rblatz··on 'United Healthcare' using DMCA against Luigi Mangione images
Are they concerned that after their CEO was gunned down in broad daylight over his supposed unethical behavior, and the killer is being celebrated as a folk hero. That by doubling down and doing unethical things they may be putting targets on their own back?

I know if I were at UHC I’d be looking to leave before I ended up on a hit list.

rblatz··on IMG_0001
For those like me who had no idea what coomer means, it’s a weird meme about men that failed no nut November. It seems popular in alt-right circles.
