There are three-ish strategies (usually employed in combination at scale).

Columnar databases are very good at compressing time series data which often has runs of repeating values that can be run length encoded, repeating deltas (store the delta not the full value), or common strings that can be dictionary encoded. So you can persist a lot of raw data with quite good compression and fast-scannability. Most commercial TSDBs are now backed by column stores. And several now tier with local SSDs for hot data and S3 for colder data.

If that's still too much data to store, you have to start throwing some away. Both sampling and materializing aggregates (and discarding the raw data) are popular techniques and can both be very reasonable trade offs.

Exactly. You gain a visceral appreciation for this when you watch your elderly parents get scammed for tens of thousands of dollars and taken of advantage of via technology channels.

We've created a very nasty internet - one that isn't safe for the old or the young - and without the law enforcement or age boundaries that we use in the physical world to keep our public spaces suitable for the broader population.

Should a private individual be able to limit a sovereign nation's battle plan to defend itself from an invasion? Specifically, in the US, should a private individual or a public company be able to compete with the federal government over foreign affairs policy? (Presuming that allied war support, materiel, and rules of engagement qualify as elements of foreign affairs.) Are Elon's choices a mercantile challenge to democratic decision making that dilutes the sovereign powers of the US?

rbetts··on Backlog size is inversely proportional to how often we talk to customers
This proposal moves the list to other systems. I dislike unbounded backlogs too - but a single searchable database is better, IMO. (Though Github issues et. al. have such bespoke, bad, limited, bad, half-baked, bad search.. Gah.)

rbetts··on Metahead – An enterprise-grade, Git-based metarepo
> Maintaining an open-source library as part of your proprietary codebase? You can use metahead to publish and synchronise part of your code in its own public repo. Accept external contributions and check them against your internal usage of the library. You have the choice to make as much or as little as you want public, with file-granularity filters.

I've wished for this in multiple open-source oriented companies.

rbetts··on Obsidian 1.5 Desktop (Public)
I use it daily for work. The core concept is a single time-sequential outline. Each entry in the outline is referenceable and can be included by reference in other pages. Pages are created wiki-style. Entries can have additional metadata. There is a “todo” system of metadata (that I don’t use.). There is a data log query capability. All content is markdown. The editor inlines images. Outline + markdown + inline images + wiki-ish system is a sweet spot for me.

Find My Feature from apple.com:

> Activation Lock is designed to prevent anyone else from using or selling your device. When you enable Find My on your device, Activation Lock is turned on automatically.

> Your Apple ID and password will then be required in order to erase or reactivate it. And if someone is able to erase your device, the Hello screen will show that it’s locked, locatable, and still belongs to you.

rbetts··on After getting $824M in state aid, GM to cut 900 jobs at Orion Assembly
Respectfully, I do not think this is fully correct. These are in part state tax dollars being paid to industry. I’d welcome a good source to the contrary.

rbetts··on After getting $824M in state aid, GM to cut 900 jobs at Orion Assembly
Thanks for the link:

> A Critical Industry Program grant in the amount of $600 million for the creation of up to 4,000 jobs related to the Orion Township and Ultium projects; > An 18-year Renewable Energy Renaissance Zone which will require a minimum investment of $1.5 billion with the potential for up to $2.5 billion, estimated to be worth $158 million; > A Strategic Site Readiness Program grant in the amount of $66.1 million awarded to the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) for public infrastructure and utility upgrades.

The grant legislation: https://www.legislature.mi.gov/documents/2021-2022/billanaly...

It certainly sounds like the grant portion was state tax money paid to GM. I wonder under what requirements.

The tax abatement is essentially shifting some of the tax base from corporations to individuals. Some of whom can pay those rates when they next find work.

You mean for the deaths of over 7,000 Iraqi civilians by US armed forces because of the invasion he started on false pretenses? Or are you thinking more about the roughly 300,000 Iraqis who died in that conflict? Or maybe you're thinking about 100+ Iraqis who died while in US detention centers, several of which resulted in actual homicide charges? Or perhaps you are deeply concerned about the distinction between murder and torture authorized by GWB?

> ofc but Europe or Canada etc.

I think the size and heterogeneity of the US is under-appreciated.

Canada is a 1/10th the population of the US. Europeans are more likely to identify as Germans, Italians, etc. and see to their national interests before those of the EU as a whole.

The US is the 3rd most populous country after China, India - ahead of Pakistan, Indonesia, Nigeria, Brazil... And the 4th largest by landmass after Russia, Canada, and China.

rbetts··on Florida bill to require bloggers writing about governor to register with state
You are dramatically narrowing, in your description, what the law actually broadly prohibits. It isn't about burlesque shows or about a teacher discussing sex with a young student.

The text of (this portion) of the law is:

> Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.

It says very clearly that a instruction about gender identity MAY NOT OCCUR before grade 4 - and after that must occur in accordance with state standards and to a vague standard of "appropriateness".

rbetts··on Florida bill to require bloggers writing about governor to register with state
It does, actually. A teacher can't lead a discussion of gender identity for young children, making a discussion of this family illegal under the law.
rbetts··on Florida bill to require bloggers writing about governor to register with state
The bill applies to all age groups. It bans discussion of gender for children less than 10. And also prohibits instruction "in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards".

The law makes it illegal for a young child with gay parents to draw a family picture and discuss it in classroom.

rbetts··on Zoom lays off 15% of employees
The ratio is likely closer to 20-30%. I searched the internet until I found data that confirmed my guess ;-). https://blossomstreetventures.medium.com/the-makeup-of-saas-....

Zoom includes network, compute, video, voice, recording, recording-storage, transcription, mobile clients, telecom/phone-in, meeting controls, webinar controls, in app messaging, presumably global data centers, calendars, whiteboards, 3rd party app integrations for calendars and schedule, zoom-rooms/hardware, "zoom apps" - 3rd party application integration, bot integration, and a whole enterprise VOIP business on top of it all.

re: why doesn't the database do it

They do - almost all databases will offer change data capture integration either via making the write ahead log readable or by suggesting triggers, like the article.

If you wanted to read the deletion journal in another system (maybe because of transaction rate), you might prefer CDC to Triggers. For example: https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/logical-replication-...

rbetts··on TSMC founder Morris Chang says globalization and free trade 'almost dead'
