rb808··on Container technologies at Coinbase: Why Kubernetes is not part of our stack
Networking mostly, RMI, JMX. Its our internal rules too, getting egress to work on our segregated networks.
rb808··on Container technologies at Coinbase: Why Kubernetes is not part of our stack
We haven't even got to ops stage yet. Small team has spent 6 months trying to repackage our app into openshift and still barely works. I think everyone regrets even looking at it.
rb808··on U.S. Navy test shows 60 percent of carrier crew have coronavirus antibodies
Or the antibody test was wrong. Seems most of the tests look super noisy.
rb808··on Forced social isolation causes neural craving similar to hunger
I have a lot more sympathy for animals in the zoo as well.
rb808··on Forced social isolation causes neural craving similar to hunger
Yeah I go outside 2-3 times a week already. I just want to visit my parents, sit at a proper desk, and have my children play with some friends.
rb808··on Forced social isolation causes neural craving similar to hunger
Honestly its scary the talk of another year like this. I have a family and even with them around living all day in my apt is starting to drive me crazy. I'd hate to be living by myself. Its a lot like solitary confinement.

My Brother had the bug, had a mild cough for a few days and lost his taste. I'm very jealous.

rb808··on Ask HN: My boss ask I take my emails while on vacation
If its America yes I think its normal you're available for important decisions and emergencies, esp in a small team. 3hrs/week sounds too much though.
rb808··on Ask HN: What is the ideal developer experience in 2020?
Agreed the typical environment is horrible. Seems to be the best way is to try to work on something really high level or low level. IE use some framework like RoR to solve business problems, or a low level library to do something interesting. It feels like everyone should be doing front end, back end, k8s, ML at the same time but its just asking to fail.
rb808··on Looking back at how Signal works
matrix and riot is awesome open source alternative. Awesome API too.
rb808··on U.S. states lean toward breaking up Google's ad tech business
Right now in my house I have the choice of 3 different cell networks, 2 broadband providers and coming some extra things like satellites. All of them can be swapped in or out without much trouble. I can move houses or even countries to get different options

My email and search though is just a few options and realistically most of my family and friends just one option. Even if I move to the other side of the world that option is still the same.

rb808··on Amazon refuses to sell book on Covid-19 and lockdowns
Not only behind Corona virus but also the vaccine implants microchips to track you.

The real story is not that a few nut jobs believe it - a huge chunk of the population actually believes it. https://news.yahoo.com/new-yahoo-news-you-gov-poll-shows-cor...

rb808··on Ask HN: Are my expectations on code quality and professionalism too high?
Junior engineers can't change culture, they'd there to learn. Mid ranked engineers can improve culture by changing parts directly and encouraging others Senior engineers can hire and fire to get the company to work their way.

Presumably you're midranked. If you are trying and its not working you either need Senior people on board or you learn to live with what you have. Do the best for your work and try to show the improvements you've done.

rb808··on Ask HN: How to disagree with the rest of management?
> managers cannot disagree with each other in front of other employees

Honestly this is Management 101. You can't run a company when the messages from different managers are conflicting. People will just do what they want with no coordination. Disagreement is good and discussion and arguments about strategy are healthy, but you need to agree on a coherent plan for the rest of the company to follow.

rb808··on Why So Many Police Are Handling the Protests Wrong
Maybe in areas where there have been no looting. In NYC its pretty frustrating to see midtown being looted and police having to babysit protesters that should be at home.
rb808··on Hands-On Scala Programming
> Odersky's coursera course is a great introduction.

Honestly that course completely put me off the language. The questions didn't match what he just told you and it was very difficult to figure out what to do. I gave up half way through and bought a Spark book to try to learn it, I might buy this one too.

rb808··on Hands-On Scala Programming
I'm in this boat too. If you look at lot of the Scala talks from 5-8 years ago it talks a lot about why Scala is better than Java, but since then Java has copied a bunch. Now Kotlin is taking over and Scala seems like yesterday's language. I've heard its really slow to compile too which makes it frustrating.
rb808··on Revolut staff claim they’ve been told to quit their jobs or be fired
> You would be amazed at how much money a bank can make on card interchange

Not in Europe. Do you have any links?

> Also most central banks don’t have negative base rates,

OK not negative, just zero Eurozone is 0%, UK is 0.1%, Scandies are zero or 0.05% https://www.global-rates.com/interest-rates/central-banks/ce...

rb808··on Revolut staff claim they’ve been told to quit their jobs or be fired
> There are still many ways for banks to make money

Can you name one?

rb808··on Revolut staff claim they’ve been told to quit their jobs or be fired
I dont understand how these new startup banks can stay in business. Previously banks could make money on the deposits in check accounts, now with negative rates they can only lose. Even big European banks are slowly dying.
rb808··on Thoughts on cameras in the age of excellent cell phone photos
The amazing thing to me is phone cameras are still getting better. They've reached a stage where I've given up using an SLR. In the future there will be very little need for a dedicated camera - yes weddings maybe excepted.

rb808··on German city wants to ditch Microsoft for Linux
Worse, Google Classrooms for most of the kids I know.
rb808··on Lenovo to Certify ThinkPad and ThinkStation Workstation Portfolio for Linux
Is there a good site to different list models and rate compatibility? The anecdote about fans being super loud are scary. Not just Lenovo if possible
rb808··on Times New Roman alternatives: You can do better (2013)
I love everything dan luu does.
rb808··on Seven years later, I bought a new MacBook. For the first time, I don't love it
Pixelbook go is absolutely perfect for people like this https://www.google.com/chromebook/device/google-pixelbook-go....

Good Keyboard, good Screen, Fast and good battery life.

rb808··on Seven years later, I bought a new MacBook. For the first time, I don't love it
I am actually thinking of buying MBP for the first time ever. I just want a good screen, good keyboard and unix like os. Lower models are actually relatively good value now compared to X1/XPS. I still dont like the company or design though.
rb808··on The Story of Hertz Going Bust
Honestly this is a good thing. There are too many big companies, not enough small, we need more to fail - esp the type that have gone through lots of mergers to reduce competition.
rb808··on The Story of Hertz Going Bust
2014 - its interesting this is when headquarters moved from NJ to Florida. Its a bit like SV - are California/North East expensive because its worth it? I'm not sure if Hertz went downhill because of the move or you just can't run a smart company from Florida.
rb808··on The Story of Hertz Going Bust
> The company also found that Dollar Thrifty had let the tires on its cars get thinner than Hertz allowed, and many had to be replaced at a cost of $30 million

I always wonder if its worth going cheaper or more expensive when renting cars. Stuff like this is interesting, I wonder how many other corners are cut at the cheaper places.

rb808··on Mosquitoes kill more than 700k people every year (2017)
150,000 people typically get diagnosed with cancer each month in the US. With hospitals shut that isn't happening.
