rb2e··on Ask HN: Which daily habit has affected your productivity the most?
Sleep. The better the previous night sleep, the better. Its not number of hours, its the type. Sometimes a short nap does wonders other times its a long hard sleep after being 'worn out'. Both can refresh you for next day.

Hardest habbit to change is time wasting. Reading HN, Reddit, News and forums where before you know it, that two minutes has morphed into an 45 minutes of mind numbing distraction. Yes I can block those pages but its more the need for a distraction than the site. Its a hard habbit to break. But its a part of my Depression, the lack of concentration.

rb2e··on Ask HN: Client refused payment, told us to come back with lawyers
First question is, did you have a Contract? Secondly, surely there is paper trail if the e-commerce company was sold? In the UK for instance, all companies details are on publicly accessible register (Companies House), surely its the same in the USA (not 100% sure how it works in the states)? Either way, sounds like best to speak to a lawyer.

Edited to add: Having a non paying client is a problem that will affect most freelance developers at some point. It won't appear as whining but best not to name and shame. It could prejudice your case if you go to court. Speak to a lawyer.

rb2e··on [dead]
Look. With all the speculation surrounding what has happened, i don't believe it is wise posting someone name. This is not confirmed and for all we know, this person is an innocent bystander who's name is now being linked to this.

Where a theft might have repercussions with law enforcement, lets not kid ourselves here, this was drug dealing and we are not talking pissed twelve year olds who lost money on Pokemon cards. We are talking what? Thousands? Millions nearly? And you don't have to be Eisenstein to work out that a bunch of pissed of dealers will be wanting blood and their money back cause they probably owe money too. So are desperate.

So is this person behind it? I have no idea but just imagine, you wake up one morning, read HN and you share the same name as a alleged thief...

Mistaken identity happens. This isn't a game. Someone could get killed.

rb2e··on Show HN: CaaS - Coffee as a Service
Hi the problem isn't with using PayPal. That's fine in my opinion for startin up. Its your asking for people to enter sensitive information on an unencrypted page but also, they can click through to the next screen without entering any details like name, address. Surely this is required info and there should be checks in place to make sure all required fields are entered before heading to payment page.

Don't mean to be hard on you, just want to save you some problems down the road.

Peace.

rb2e··on HTML: font color=”red” becomes green

rb2e··on Show HN: CaaS - Coffee as a Service
I was quite interested but when it asked me for my personal details such as name, address etc, the page when you clicked "buy ground" was not protected by SSL.

Sorry but in my opinion, info like that should be protected with SSL and not sent in the clear. But thats just me.

Edited to add: You can goto the PayPal payment page without entering any details like a shipping address. You might want to fix this.

rb2e··on Turntable.fm shutting down - new "Turntable Live" introduced
Hmmn that sucks then. If you could do it from home, would be so much better. It kinda defeats the purpose then if you have to goto a studio. From home you could just do it on Justin.tv or YouTube but these are for general purposes. If It was a site dedicated to live music where artists could sell merchandise, MP3 etc or collect tips, would be a winner.
rb2e··on Turntable.fm shutting down - new "Turntable Live" introduced
Actually believe this would be a good plan. I listen to live music in Second Life (Don't laugh) and I've found live music works well when streamed live both audio only and video.

For musicians, its great to perform live for people but having to tour and go from gig to gig, lugging equipment around, and most of the time only being paid beer money and travel expenses.

Being able to perform for an audience but not having to leave your doorstep saves you both time and money. You can reach more people worldwide than you can in a small pub holding fifty to a hundred.

I understand people love turntable.fm but the labels have pretty much killed innovation by the licensing so to me it isn't a surprising that streaming companies are having problems.

Maybe the new turntable.fm can be the Twitch.TV of the live music world. Who knows but anything is possible!

rb2e··on Ask HN: Is asking a code question appropriate on HN?
it can be, but stackoverflow I feel is better suited as your question may have previously been answered.
rb2e··on Battle-ready Nginx – an optimization guide
I have to agree. If only I had known this about this repo back when I when I had a VPS. The comments for each option are explained well. The Nginx help docs are helpful but sometimes its nice to see a more detailed approach and though not every option will be right for "your" circumstances. It is nice to see.
rb2e··on Battle-ready Nginx – an optimization guide
I would love to see some before and after in the wild stats using this configuration. Whilst it would be an apples versus oranges comparison, it would at least show that this config works compared to the default. Maybe a Blitz.io rush test?
rb2e··on Dear Googles: G+/YouTube Anschluss – you've done outed me
On a point I agree but not everyone has a thick skin to deal with the constant abuse some YouTubers face and they shouldn't have to.

But ultimately I believe the whole policy of linking Google Plus account to YouTube was to clean it up so it looks good for advertisers. They do not want their brand associated with some of the homophobic, sexist and racist comments some were posting.

rb2e··on Dear Googles: G+/YouTube Anschluss – you've done outed me
Having a Google plus account linked to YouTube with real name policy has not stopped the trolls and poisonous commenters. They have just carried on as usual. Now it has just made it easier with spammers, blackhats now able to leave links on their comments. Sure they can be deleted with an hour or so but that one hour is all you need to spread your payload.

The only people who the real name policy punishes is the real users. The ones who do everything right. The ones who do not wish to have their lives outed this way.

Now I'm gay, and have no problem being out online but at home in public is another problem. I've never moved from my Childhood home and I live in a small town, its pretty easy to know who I am, so I made it a policy to never link the two so I don't have to do deal with Homophobia on my Doorstep. Its a small town and news soon spreads. I don't have a Google Plus account and am moving away from Gmail for this reason. I never ever use a real photo online. Facebook is only used for minor things on an anonymous email address with a blank photo. Even then I hate it and do not use it for personal stuff.

If you are really concerned about privacy, just delete your Gmail, Google Plus account. Get your wallet out and move to a paid alternative where you will not have to worry about having your email connected to a social network. Buy a domain name, use a private whois service like at NearlyFreeSpeech.Net so you can move between providers over the years but keep the same address.

If you really must comment on YouTube, create a Google Plus profile on a brand new Gmail account for those exact purposes. Understand that anything you write online can be traced back to you. We are not anonymous despite if you never use a real name. Google knows more about you and your interests than any other entity and it has years of your surfing and searching habits in its database.

Edited to add, if you hate the comments on your own YouTube videos, just turn them off.

rb2e··on Unicorns, Syndicates and the tools to track them
Gotta agree. If a company is private then this info isn't public and can't be audited like a publicly traded company. You're relying on non public data from Hush hush, secret sources or sites which allow you to trade shares in private. You gotta wonder though, how accurate is this data?
rb2e··on The Onion Halts All Print Editions

rb2e··on DigitalOcean lost our data and gave us $500
The $500 credit from DO is quite reassuring. Usually if the HD fails and your data is lost, your out of luck. I hear the "horror" stories of some hosts reusing consumer Hard Drivers between servers so learned, Your data is your responsibility. I'm glad the OP had backups but these failures happen, thankfully DO had the business sense to compensate them.

Seems good advertising for DO, as any knowledgable system admin knows Drives fail. DO could have not done anything.

rb2e··on Stop comparing this to the 2000 bubble
The only way to underniably confirm its a bubble is if it "pops".

Is snapchat worth 4 billion? Only when some buys it or it goes public. Till then its speculation and we can be here till the "cows come home" debating if we are in a bubble.

I think the best people to ask are PG, Fred at AVC etc. The ones who do this for living who are making these decisions everyday and know the markets. I don't know enough to say for sure and wasn't here for the last bubble.

rb2e··on Ask HN: how do cold calls/emails work for you?
You're right. I was wrong. I was a bit too quick with the reply. Sorry.
rb2e··on Ask HN: how do cold calls/emails work for you?
In my ye olde business days, I made the mistake of having my startup listed in a certain "yellow" directory here in the UK. As I used the same number for home and work (it was a low volume type business and YES I was stupid and I will never make that mistake again), I then got more businesses trying to sell me stuff then customers by a large margin.

I lost track of the large number of people who asked for the "Webmaster" or person who owns the website. That was in 2001/2002 and way before Google.

rb2e··on Ask HN: how do cold calls/emails work for you?
I get sent emails from a guy offering to do web development work. He has emailed me a number of times but I have never met him, contacted him or communicated with him. Trouble is, he sent the same emails to a number of recently registered domains. All exactly the same. They arrived in my spam folder and then I delete them.

I also get telephone calls from people/business I've never contacted before. I get so many, I just let the machine deal with it.

You have to remember if you cold call or email, then you are just one of a number that people get every day at home or at work. They will assume its junk, spam or your selling something they don't need. The ideal way is to not to bother people with cold calling/emailing but rather be the person they are looking for. The solution to their need. The useful thing they don't know they want till they need it.

I am sure, cold calling, emailing works for some but for me I just ignore them and I believe many people do. May be different in Enterprise.

rb2e··on Show HN: Updating archive of HN's /newest, with pre-rendering of the URLs
Great! Thank you for doing that.
rb2e··on HN & Comments (I was wrong)
Noisier - Sorry. That's the trouble with spell check. You still need an editor to proof read you work.
rb2e··on Show HN: Updating archive of HN's /newest, with pre-rendering of the URLs
I like this personally as someone who submitted something to HN and I don't mind my content used this way as a link is used pointing back to the main site and its obvious where the main site is but if it downloaded every post I made, then I might take issue.

However some of the website owners may not like you're downloading the content of their articles and hosting them elsewhere. There is a great army of spam sites that will just watch http://pingomatic.com/ and scrape each new entry. Then they will on host it on a splog and stick adverts up. Which gets website owners annoyed.

Trouble is Google might not realize which is the main site and won't get the page rank or the visitors don't come to their site but an alternative. They'll get annoyed as they won't be able to monetize them or see who is reading the page through analytics.

So you may want to set up a DMCA page and abuse email address to stay on the right side of the law. Also a robots.txt which denies Google and Bing from crawling the pages you downloaded.

rb2e··on UK: Snowden reporter's partner involved in 'espionage' and 'terrorism'
This kind of response is not new sadly. On Netflix, there is a documentary on Daniel Elisberg and his leaking of the Pentagon Papers [1] - The Most Dangerous Man in America [2]. If you watch it and you'll see some of the parallels to today with the responses between the State and Journalism.

Or if you could just generate a QR code and print on a sticker saying "if lost, please scan for return details". The QR code takes you to your own website with return details or a mailto: link.

Not 100% fool proof and depends on those who find it having a smart phone but its a cheap hack.

Have you thought about setting up a couple of email accounts on AOL and Yahoo just to test how your emails are received? See if they are being marked/caught as spam automatically?
