rayuela··on Confessions of Marcus Hutchins, the hacker who stopped the WannaCry attack
Hutchins was busted for committing bank fraud. Him doing one good thing does not absolve him of having committed another crime...he's still a criminal. Rather than protest him being arrested we should advocate for him getting a reduced sentence for having at least done some good.
rayuela··on EU-Commissioned Study Proposes European Firewall [pdf]
Seriously, wtf
rayuela··on Facebook uses 1.5B Reddit posts to create chatbot
How many of these reddit posts were themselves bot posts? Is it bots all the way down now?
rayuela··on Amazon locks down internal employee communications amid organizing efforts
This! Amazon is taking a huge risk in exposing themselves to the wrath of a personal feud between Bezos and Trump.
rayuela··on US patent office rules that artificial intelligence cannot be a legal inventor
This seems like a trivial administrative hurtle. My AI didn't invent that, I did....
rayuela··on Universa tail fund returned 3,600% in March
I'm getting really tired of these funds advertising these single event returns. Looking at their long term performance makes them look mediocre at best. There are seriously countless funds that have been betting on the next big disaster for the past 10 years and have been bleeding money out the nose and then they've made up a tiny fraction of their losses in the past month and are now like "Oh look we were right all along!"
rayuela··on Show HN: Music sharing site that allows listeners to support artists
This is terrible branding. At first I thought it was called soundART, which would be a million times better. Hell, I'm pretty sure you could get away with switching those two letters and nobody would notice. Rebrand ASAP! How many artist are really going to want their own personal brand to be associated with the term rat?
rayuela··on Crypto Fund II
Crypto Fund II to pay off investors from Crypto Fund I... genius I tell ya.
rayuela··on ARM Development for the Office: Unboxing an Ampere EMag Workstation
Sooo confused by this. This doesn't seem competitive at all. Is there some super secret special sauce that's not immediately apparent in the spec sheet? Who the hell is going to buy this?????
rayuela··on Carnival Executives Knew They Had a Virus Problem, but Kept the Party Going
This seems like the very exact case where you'd want to pierce the corporate veil. If this doesn't qualify then what does?
rayuela··on ImageNet-trained CNNs are biased towards texture (2019)
Oh wow you're absolutely right. This is actually a really clever solution to the problem presented in this paper.
rayuela··on 3D photographic inpainting from a single source image
You could translate this to a non-CUDA GPU, such as a mobile GPU, but even that would require a bit of effort to be able to condense it such that is wasn't a total lag fest. Executing this on CPU seems damn near impossible from a usability standpoint given the large matrix multiplication involved. You really need the parallel capabilities of a GPU.
rayuela··on Fed to buy junk bonds, lend to states in fresh virus support
100% spot on analysis. This is bailing out the rich strategy again. Gotta be ready to ride this wave up if you can, but oh man is this gonna hurt when it pops.
rayuela··on Fed to buy junk bonds, lend to states in fresh virus support
Love it when people cite FRED. Top quality data source and one of the best litmus tests for the credibility of someone's claims on economic matters. This guy knows what he's talking bout. Good job!
rayuela··on Fed to buy junk bonds, lend to states in fresh virus support
They're literally buying JUNK bonds....

rayuela··on Crypto’s Business Model Is Familiar. What Isn’t Is Who Benefits
What is clear is that as an entity heavily invested in cryptocurrency they benefit from peddling it to poor ignorant plebs. Maybe this article should start by first disclosing their large long position in cryptocurrency. This is marketing garbage, please stop posting trash like this.
rayuela··on Rclone – Sync files and directories to many cloud storage providers
Wow this is a true OG account. Good shit btw, keep up the good work!
rayuela··on Coronavirus and Credibility
Totally agree with this. This is something you can clearly see in Trump's approval rating, which just reached the highest levels of his entire tenure [1]. Things are only getting more polarizing, but the really scary thing is that this admin's approval rating climbs the worse things get and it is worrying to see this incentive structure :(
rayuela··on Bank of America: 58,000 small businesses ask for $6B in loans since 9 a.m
That's why we should be conducting random tests on samplings of the populations. This would be a statistics problem.
rayuela··on Ask HN: How to prosper under negative interest rates?
I would love to see you take this and short the SP500, really put your money where your mouth is. Value is relative, and relative to the rest of the world the US is going to fare quite well. So good luck to you!
rayuela··on Ask HN: How to prosper under negative interest rates?
??? That's not how you measure deflation....

edit: for those wondering you wanna look at a Consumer Price Index (CPI) to dertemine inflation/deflation

rayuela··on Amazon fires worker who led strike over virus
These here are the important details about this and it looks pretty egregious on Amazon's behalf. Imagine the sort of leverage they could wield over their employees if they are able to get away with this kind of behavior?
rayuela··on Ask HN: How to prosper under negative interest rates?
Thank you for commenting. Too many arm chair economist talking out their bums in these threads. I'm always reluctant to even look at these discussions now a days due to the poor quality of the comments, but your comment gives me hope.
rayuela··on Ask HN: How to prosper under negative interest rates?
What do you mean by "good market conditions?" Also, we're definitely not in deflationary conditions - this implies a decrease in prices of goods. The shock to supply chains is actually going to make things more expensive. What we're really looking at is the possibility of stagflation - inflation + fall in demand.
rayuela··on Airbnb Will Give $250M to Hosts Who Lost Income to Virus
The company said it would pay 25% of what the host would “normally receive through your cancellation policy.”
rayuela··on I had to build a web scraper to buy groceries
Hey do you have any suggested readings on how to better understand these structures and your reasoning?
rayuela··on Was corporate profit growth a bubble inflated by "financial engineering"?
This is an excellent deck. Thank you for sharing it!
rayuela··on Facial Hairstyles and Filtering Facepiece Respirators [pdf]
Glad I'm not the only one who thought this. I guess it's really not that far from the realm of possibility these days. Why apply machine learning to finding a cure when you can develop a selfie filter that makes for better insta posts during a pandemic?
rayuela··on Challenging the myth of individual programmer productivity
Should the conclusion not rather be that the average CMU student is really smart, some are really fucking smart, and a few struggle to keep up? This was conducted through a class assignment at CMU no? I would expect to find a good proportion of 10x engineers no???
rayuela··on Ask HN: What were the things you did that made the biggest impact at your work?
This has saved my ass more than I can count. You've earned your bragging rights
