rawrmaan··on Show HN: P2P decentralized messaging application over Bitcoin Cash
Just cause it CAN be done doesn’t mean it SHOULD be done.
rawrmaan··on Fuck You Startup World (2016)
Hope you’re not getting too much saddle rash on that high horse!
rawrmaan··on Tesla Plunges After a Conference Call
Elon has always seemed to have the attitude of "not everyone should invest in this stock". I find this refreshing. God forbid a CEO do anything except try to drive the share price as high as humanly possible.

I don't know if this carries the same weight in a public company, but setting expectations with investors is super important in a startup and prevents a ton of wasted time wrangling investors who don't get the true cost/benefit ratio of what you're doing.

rawrmaan··on Salsify – A New Architecture for Real-time Internet Video
Aside from the fact that the tech is obviously cool, I think the FAQ section is really well-written. Props to the team.
rawrmaan··on API and Other Platform Product Changes
Holy shit, I'm not even using the Facebook API at the moment but this was infuriating to read. Please, someone make an FB alternative with wide open APIs where users can monetize their own data. If someone's already working on this, I'd love to know.

I will officially never try to use any Facebook API in the future.

rawrmaan··on Show HN: Guilded – build and organize online gaming teams
This looks absolutely beautiful, and I'm a huge React + MobX fan as well. If I were still in my gaming prime, I'd be all over this. Great job!
rawrmaan··on Dissident.ai
This is beautiful and I love the nostalgic UI design, but I really don't see any reason to use it.
rawrmaan··on Making Ads and Pages More Transparent
This is amazing! I love that they're adding the ability to see:

1) which campaign or PAC bought the ad

2) all other ads by that buyer

3) how much that buyer spent on this ad and all other ads

Seriously, what other platform provides this level of transparency into political ads? It's unprecedented.

Also, it doesn't matter if you use or like Facebook--literally tens of millions do in the US, and they all have a vote. This is a win for democracy.

rawrmaan··on We Open Source Everything
Good stuff. Sentry does this too and I think it benefits everyone.

On the other hand, man that custom font is tough on the eyes.

rawrmaan··on FedEx reserves 20 Tesla Semi all-electric big rig trucks
Fair point, but you have to take this development in context. EVs technologically outpace ICE vehicles on every axis other than refuel time, upfront cost and range. EVs can improve on all of these metrics, whereas ICE vehicles cannot. Therefore a complete switch is only a matter of time—it remains to be seen how quickly it will happen.
rawrmaan··on FedEx reserves 20 Tesla Semi all-electric big rig trucks
It's becoming clearer and clearer that the main things preventing total EV takeover are lack of good products on the market and production capacity. I'm excited to hopefully watch both of these problems erode in the next 5 years.

Really really ready to stop breathing fossil fuels all day every day in the city.

rawrmaan··on Slack's bait and switch
Don’t price your service so low! Anything below $5/mo gives the perception of having little value to offer. Plus you’re gonna lose a fat percentage to credit card processing.
rawrmaan··on React Native and Yoga Both Given MIT Licence by Facebook
Exact opposite experience. After being a mobile dev for 8+ years and making all of my most recent apps in RN, including a rewrite of one that was many years old, you're wasting your time if you still write native code instead of RN. It's just better in every single way and is an incredibly impressive, stable piece of technology.
rawrmaan··on Bitcoin drops below $9000 on Coinbase
As an outsider who has become deeply involved in the community, your assessment of the creators could not be further from the truth. They are hard-working, honest individuals who are extremely open about their process and holdings. Check out the dev fund, which represents about 5% of total holdings: https://www.nanode.co/account/xrb_1ipx847tk8o46pwxt5qjdbncjq...

The core team has been working very hard to try and improve the software, and they are making strides every month. I am constantly impressed with their professionalism and stature.

I think Nano (https://nano.org -- just rebranded from RaiBlocks) will become one of the biggest arbitrage currencies due to zero fees and its highly scalable architecture (7k+ TPS tested). I've been working my butt off to make sure as many people as possible will be able to build with it as the documentation and ecosystem are currently lacking. See https://www.nanode.co/node-api

Prunability included.

rawrmaan··on RESTyped: End-To-end Typing for REST APIs with TypeScript
This is pretty cool, I hadn't seen it before!

RESTyped has a couple of advantages over this:

- RESTyped definitions are extremely lightweight and don't require shipping an API wrapper with a bunch of generated code

- No build/manual copy step required. Easy to distribute typings on NPM.

rawrmaan··on RESTyped: End-To-end Typing for REST APIs with TypeScript
Yup. Someone on Reddit suggested making an OpenAPI/Swagger -> RESTyped adapter. If people are interested in this, I'm all for it.
rawrmaan··on RESTyped: End-To-end Typing for REST APIs with TypeScript
Fixed, thank you!
rawrmaan··on Show HN: Enviar.io – Real estate landing pages
The problem is, if we can't see the the whole page, we don't know if the page displays more info than what's in the screenshot when we scroll down. Turns out, there's not much, at least in the sample page that another user created, so maybe that's why you didn't show more.
rawrmaan··on Show HN: Enviar.io – Real estate landing pages
This. Product looks awesome but without any examples I couldn't see myself converting.
rawrmaan··on Type-safe GraphQL with OCaml
If you're interested in typed APIs, also check out RESTyped: https://github.com/rawrmaan/restyped

It's an end-to-end way to type check REST API calls and responses using TypeScript.

rawrmaan··on A guide to great things still made in the U.S.A
This could really use some better sorting, like by product category. It's currently a nice monument but not actually useful.
rawrmaan··on Ask HN: What service do you use for human translations of your website?
Just played with this for my app's description and it's pretty amazing. Definitely recommend.
rawrmaan··on Node.js 8 Moves into Long-Term Support, Node.js 9 Becomes Current Release Line
Agreed. I tried to switch to yarn a couple times now and it simply wasn't reliable (though the last attempt was a few months ago)
rawrmaan··on Thank You GitHub
I’m seeing a lot of hate in this thread. I think we tend to lose sight of the fact that things don’t just _happen_, people make them happen. GitHub has absolutely earned its dominance in my eyes, and although it may have shortcomings, I think it’s one of the most important inventions in the last ten yesrs, period.

When I look at the software I use to run my business, literally 100% of it is open source and has a community improving it and patching it on GitHub. There was simply not this level of open source enthusiasm and participation back in the Sourceforge “dark ages” (although even Sourceforge was hugely influential and a big step in software democratization if you compare it to what came before).

rawrmaan··on Critics say WeWork is an overvalued real-estate play
WeWork's achilles heel IMO is that they disincentivize non-VC funded companies from staying for more than a year due to their 70% first-year rent discount. We at Habitat are moving out of the WeWork Philly office after just a year because of this. It's just too expensive to stay.
rawrmaan··on Fresh Horrors from Equifax CEO Richard Smith's Congressional Hearing
It's kind of a ridiculous statement. A counting error is nowhere near is shocking as the initial breach, especially considering it happened after the breach.
