rawrmaan··on $1B for 20,000 Bay Area homes
As someone who lived in South Bay for 5 years, I'd hardly call it a "desirable area".
rawrmaan··on We Have Four Years to Save Ourselves from Climate Change, Harvard Scientist Says
I don't know if anyone is researching this, but couldn't we manufacture stupidly large floating reflective tarps and start deploying them anywhere sea ice is melting? Seems like this would be a high benefit for relatively low cost.
rawrmaan··on Chinese Cash Is Suddenly Toxic in Silicon Valley, Following U.S. Pressure
Absolutely. They could have been US investors and had the same issues.
rawrmaan··on Chinese Cash Is Suddenly Toxic in Silicon Valley, Following U.S. Pressure
Their personalities and expectations were toxic. They didn't understand what they invested in and were pissed when we couldn't grow a high-touch business like a pure software business. No pleasant or helpful interactions, just rage.
rawrmaan··on Chinese Cash Is Suddenly Toxic in Silicon Valley, Following U.S. Pressure
Good. We raised Series A from Chinese investors a few years ago and they were toxic. Not to mention the political implications of enriching countries like China and Saudi Arabia. In hindsight would have rather closed up shop than taken their money.
rawrmaan··on Bitcoin's Rally Masks Uncomfortable Fact: Almost Nobody Uses It
You analyzed Bitcoin on its technologies and merits and concluded that it’s a useful currency? Yikes.

I love this! Thanks for sharing!
rawrmaan··on Physical kilogram is officially dead

Still waiting on scientific journalists to reach the same precisionon.

rawrmaan··on Millennials and Gen Z Increasingly Pessimistic About Their Lives, Survey Finds
> shrinking CO2

[citation needed]

Global CO2 emissions are nowhere near peaking, let alone shrinking.

rawrmaan··on WhatsApp voice calls were used to inject spyware on phones
Wow, TIL. Thanks!
rawrmaan··on Dr. Bronner’s soap brand became a touchstone of wellness culture
Love the stuff. Buy one bottle and you can shower with it for months.

rawrmaan··on When setting an environment variable gives you a 40x speedup
I really enjoyed the writing style. This was fun to read. Thanks!
rawrmaan··on Burnout caused by chronic stress is widespread
This is so close to my experience it’s amazing. I’ve found that disconnecting from any technology for 2 hours straight on any given day (harder than it should be) will 100% of the time make me feel much better.

I think that it relates to the stress response cycle you’re talking about. If I give my body and mind time away from stressors, I can make quick progress to escaping the “constantly overwhelmed” feeling.

rawrmaan··on Fully managed PostgreSQL databases
Absolutely. Heroku Postgres is a marvel and I use it for all my projects. If DO isn't even competing on price, then I don't know what they are competing on.
rawrmaan··on Fully managed PostgreSQL databases
Wow, I thought this was gonna be cheaper than Heroku Postgres by a lot, but really it’s only slightly cheaper in terms of CPU/mem, and actually more expensive in terms of storage. Would love to see someone benchmark the two offerings for comparisons, especially disk speed.
rawrmaan··on Tell HN: Wells Fargo completely offline
Underrated comment
rawrmaan··on Google’s also peddling a data collector through Apple’s back door
Wow, this is making me realize how much power Apple holds as the arbiter of enterprise certs. They hold more power to quickly punish other corporations than even the government does, in a certain respect. I hope they continue to leverage that power for good--iOS has tremendous market share and Apple can entirely force other companies to play by their rules.
rawrmaan··on Discord raises $150M, surpassing $2B valuation
Sweet. I appreciate Discord. It’s like a much less bloated, simpler version of Slack that still has all the features basic communities need.
rawrmaan··on Blue Apron's 90% Drop Makes It Third Worst U.S. IPO This Decade
Good. I hope they fail. This is an insanely wasteful business model, and any claims they make about sustainability are ancillary at best.
rawrmaan··on Vue 3.0 Updates [slides]
TS is more popular and has a bigger ecosystem. It could enable more contribution to the project.
rawrmaan··on Transitioning Google Cloud leadership after three great years
The new CEO is the former President of Product Development at Oracle...I wanna puke. Oracle has some of the most hated products in the industry. I hope he's able to adapt to Google's style and not the other way around.
rawrmaan··on YouTube comments are heavily manipulated, and I fear for our democracy
Hmm, I can't watch the video. "We are experiencing problems with our servers. Please try again later."

EDIT: Was able to watch it. This looks like a bug more than anything.

rawrmaan··on YouTube comments are heavily manipulated, and I fear for our democracy
I never said that anywhere was any better. I'd like to think Hacker News is a place where fewer people would be fooled, because this is a place specifically for critical thought and discussion.

YouTube is not. It's a website that everyone uses, and where the most impressionable or least politically aware members of the population are the most numerous, easiest targets.

rawrmaan··on YouTube comments are heavily manipulated, and I fear for our democracy
If you think that being smart and vigilant is enough to protect yourself from this type of manipulation, I think you're wrong. I find it very easy to fall for social proof in internet comments, and I've been in the tech industry for over 10 years. This has nothing to do with intelligence.
rawrmaan··on YouTube comments are heavily manipulated, and I fear for our democracy
Author here--it sounds like you're talking about YouTube banning comments on certain videos? If you're talking about YouTube changing the content or social proof on individual comments, that sounds like a conspiracy theory to me.
rawrmaan··on YouTube comments are heavily manipulated, and I fear for our democracy
It's one of the biggest problems that I worry about with the internet. Yes, public key cryptography can prove that "message x came from source y". But nobody's figured out a way to prove "source y is a person" or even better "source y is definitely the person they say they are".

I like the approach projects like Keybase and Stellar are taking: Building a decentralized network of trust based on existing, real-world trust-based relationships.

rawrmaan··on YouTube comments are heavily manipulated, and I fear for our democracy
It's a pretty easy question to answer: Yes, they do. Look at the engagement in terms of likes and replies on almost any video. Clearly people are reading and participating.
rawrmaan··on Dropbike: Data Breaches and Free Bike Rides
I haven't written much about it except in comments here on HN. I agree there should be more out there, I hope I can find the time to do some writing.
rawrmaan··on Dropbike: Data Breaches and Free Bike Rides
Hi there, thanks so much for the bug reports! Would love to see a screenshot of the clipped icon if you could e-mail it to me at rawrmaan@gmail.com.

The flickering when viewing lightbox/modal views is actually due to my navigation library, react-native-navigation, which is otherwise excellent. I believe they're fixing that in their v2 release, at which point those transitions should be indistinguishable from native.

I've also made a ton of progress on Android performance in the past month, including the mindblowing realization that I had set hardwareAccelerated=false in my app's manifest over a year ago. The game should now be very smooth in all views, even on very low-end Android devices :)
