raugustinus··on I’m writing again
Dang we're getting old ey?
raugustinus··on Online age verification is the hill to die on
Age verification requires identity verification once — but it doesn't require revealing your identity ever to a third party. With FHE (fully homomorphic encryption), identity data is encrypted on your device and never leaves it in plaintext. Not to the merchant, not to us as the verification service — nobody. We only compute on encrypted data and return a yes/no. I'm building this at identified.app
raugustinus··on LinkedIn will soon train AI models with data from European users
"Uber but for nailcare on Blockchain". I'm laughing but I'm not sure if I should be crying. Thanks for the laugh!
raugustinus··on Metamaterials, AI, and the Road to Invisibility Cloaks
So confused when I read invincibility cloak.
raugustinus··on Ask HN: The government of my country blocked VPN access. What should I use?
There's https://refraction.network/ but I am not sure how feasible that is at the moment (or at all). I came across it when researching some TLS stuff in golang (programming language).
raugustinus··on Self-Consuming Generative Models Go MAD
Maybe one should revise those thoughts. Apparently all of us will have issues with cow's milk. Some of us just have problems with even small amounts.

At least this is what our specilist at the hospital explained to us.

raugustinus··on Heat pumps, more than you wanted to know (2023)
Here in the Netherlands there's a huge incentive to move to heatpumps (subsidies and whatnot). I believe most of those (if not all) that are being installed have a defrosting mode which is automatically activated. I have seen mine defrosting in the last few days since it's finally below zero (celsius).
raugustinus··on Ask HN: LinkedIn mysteriously banned me permanently; where to go next?
Someone who insults your tech stack. Oh no sorry that's a technology insultant.
raugustinus··on Covid-19 is now officially a pandemic, WHO says
"If the role of the WHO is to stave off pandemics and not just to monitor them". Not really no.
raugustinus··on The Next Leap in Self-Driving: Prediction
While yes, they also completely lose track if the white lines on the road aren't available.
raugustinus··on Firefox 70 released for Firefox Quantum: Developer Edition
While I mostly agree, I do switch to Chrome every once in a while when the javascript stacktrace in FFdev is a bit unclear. Chrome usually seems to be a bit better. But I always switch right back to FF.
raugustinus··on Longevity and anti-aging research: ‘Prime time for an impact on the globe’
Hah, you made me think of this: "what's really going to bake your noodle later on is would you still have broken it if I wouldn't have said anything".

raugustinus··on Longevity and anti-aging research: ‘Prime time for an impact on the globe’
We are not free to end our own life when you feel you had enough. There's laws for that. But yes, I'll reflect on my options whether or not I'll have that chemo when I'm in my sixties/seventies.
raugustinus··on Longevity and anti-aging research: ‘Prime time for an impact on the globe’
Reading the article beyond the second paragraph actually affirms kinda what you're saying. I guess I shot straight into a kneejerk reaction on the subtitle 'extending the human lifespan' :)
raugustinus··on Longevity and anti-aging research: ‘Prime time for an impact on the globe’
I am 100% for a (more) healthy life. I have no interest in 'extending my lifespan' except for the 'few' extra years that the healthy life might bring.
raugustinus··on Longevity and anti-aging research: ‘Prime time for an impact on the globe’
Hah good one. On the other hand, medical possibilities will be increasing way beyond what we'll be able to afford.
raugustinus··on Longevity and anti-aging research: ‘Prime time for an impact on the globe’
From the point of view of economics maybe. Switching professions can be done in a current lifespan and is not done very often. I don't see people changing just because their life is extended. I just don't understand people's fixation on having a longer life. Seems to me people just keep looking at the horizon to bring them what they want and they forget what's right in front of them.
raugustinus··on Longevity and anti-aging research: ‘Prime time for an impact on the globe’
What makes people think we want to have them around any longer? To extend life is to decrease it's value. Simple economics tells us it's inflation.

edit: I think Neil deGrasse Tyson says it a lot better than me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3G9LOJZTmM

raugustinus··on Health dangers of sleep deprivation
Such a shame the subtitle of the article is all about quantity. Quality of life far outweighs quantity, but this subtitle probably serves better as clikckbait.
raugustinus··on With teen mental health deteriorating over five years, there’s a likely culprit
The real solution would be for companies to start giving a shit to whom they hire and put some effort into finding them.
raugustinus··on Intel Has a Big Problem
Did you miss that Intel's stopped developing the Xeon Phi's?
raugustinus··on Intel Has a Big Problem
well yeah not really. it's a bit of a long read but it comes down to whom you ask. https://www.extremetech.com/computing/246902-intel-claims-th...
raugustinus··on Did Bitcoin just prove it can't scale?
There's a lot of people in the world running around telling people all kinds of things.
raugustinus··on Mercurial with Largefiles: Why it is not a solution for game development
Would a maven like repository possibly be a solution to this problem? Simply have dependencies to binary files/artifacts distributed by Nexus?
raugustinus··on Paul S. Otellini has died
Sorry for your loss. But at least he cleared his conscience. Sorry he had to go through the stress as well. It might take decades, but they will reap what they sow.
raugustinus··on How the Elderly Lose Their Rights
Those participating quite often love the unaccountability the bureaucracy provides them. Hiding behind a procedure is often preferred as to being out there making a difference. The indifference some people show, especially here in my country, to this bureaucracy is astounding. Makes my blood boil. Which might be the reason I'm having difficulty discussing it with them.
raugustinus··on Duck Duck Go: Illusion of Privacy (2013)
If you were in that position of power and had this article published you might not be doing such a great job. Streisand effect maybe?

Since this article I have, which was in the making for some time already, switched from Chrome to Firefox with duckduckgo as my main search engine. Added Disconnect and Ublock origin as well. And yes I realize it doesn't help against NSA tracking of a certian magnitude.

raugustinus··on Seriously, Equifax? This Is a Breach No One Should Get Away With
What really puzzles me is the response or lack thereof of those agencies' testimony, if that's what's they're called, during the Congressional hearings. They basically stated that their ratings were nothing more then opinions. And still they're being taken seriously.
raugustinus··on Seriously, Equifax? This Is a Breach No One Should Get Away With
They were using what everybody else uses. But not everybody else has financial data on so many people behind this framework. If you're dealing with this kind of data there are some additional requirements. I've worked at a few banks and they all provide a lot of extra security on top of those frameworks. So no they're not just victims in this.

I read that top management sold a lot of stock prior to the news coming out about the breach. I hope they get sued for prior knowledge or whatever that is called.

raugustinus··on HSBC is killing my business, piece by piece
And then fund more loans on those loans. Like fractional reserve banking.
