Ah you’re only scratching the surface. It’s really the “big fork” doing all of the damage.
rattlesnakedave··on My mindfulness practice led me to meltdown (2021)
you need some ego. otherwise you won't know where to point your fork to eat.
rattlesnakedave··on Lessons learnt while trying to modernize some C code (2022)
Yes, this is crap, and not useful on modern systems. The only reason many claim to not think so is because they’ve been forced to figure it out, and now want others to as well.

rattlesnakedave··on 10TB portable SSDs on Amazon UK are scams
3rd party sellers on amazon's platform are not amazon.
rattlesnakedave··on 10TB portable SSDs on Amazon UK are scams
This is correct. I would also be highly surprised if most of these fake items are FBA or sold by amazon. Almost all of it can be avoided by being very wary of 3rd party sellers (as you should be, on any platform that allows it).
rattlesnakedave··on A corrupt file led to the FAA ground stoppage – also found in backup system
> This stuff is such cringe, it is the type of response you see from fresh CS students who haven't started working yet and think everything is a piece of demo work where the requirements don't matter and that everything is simple if you just start writing some code.

This stuff is such cringe, it is the type of response you see from jaded boomers more focused on box-ticking and punching out as opposed to doing anything new.

This is a situation where tossing the whole damn thing out and starting over again would be productive. The systems that lead to the creation of these half-fossilized government projects (that still don't work!) will not change and needs to be tossed.

rattlesnakedave··on A corrupt file led to the FAA ground stoppage – also found in backup system
> You all seem to think this is similar in value or operation to a web app

This line of reasoning is pure, 100%, cope. There is a reason this was broken and grounded flights nationwide. Providing cover for systems that allowed this to happen is not productive.

rattlesnakedave··on Coinbase cuts staff by a further 20%

For one, they do much more than CME.

rattlesnakedave··on How to store your app's entire state in the url
Yeah, why not just base64 encode, shove that into a db with a shorter key? I'm pretty positive this is how tiktok works for sharing videos.

rattlesnakedave··on The silent struggles of workers with ADHD
Not 100% related but if you are having ADHD symptoms consider making sure you don’t have sleep apnea. Waking symptoms are about the same.
rattlesnakedave··on Sign in with Google has been removed for your privacy
It actually is very hard. There’s a long tail of concerns that make it difficult to do authentication as well as a major player in the space.

I’m sure any day now. Better hold your breath!
rattlesnakedave··on Nobody’s using CBDCs – India’s piloting one anyway
I like CBDCs, and I’m a big privacy guy generally. I really do not see them as being significantly worse than the status quo of digital payments. For every horrifying what-if mentioned there’s already an example of it in our current system (in the US, at least). If having them means I don’t have to deal with ACH again, I’m all for it.
rattlesnakedave··on Emergency declared and curfew imposed following North Carolina power grid attack
Metcalf immediately came to mind for me as well. Horrifying. I remember a WSJ article that cited an FERC study and claimed <10 substations would need to be attacked to cause a nationwide blackout.

I think this is it, but on mobile and can’t find a mirror w/o paywall: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405270230402010457943...

rattlesnakedave··on The best Go framework: no framework?
Very little to do with the fact that it's a Java developer. More someone identifying as "x language developer working at y language shop." Most of the time, including this one, it shows that they see x language as a part of their identity. Hard to have objective conversations if that is the case.
rattlesnakedave··on The best Go framework: no framework?
For junior developers reading this:

Frameworks are great (sometimes), but pay attention to who is giving you this advice.

rattlesnakedave··on The best Go framework: no framework?
> a Java BE Engineer who joined a Go shop

I didn't need to read the rest of the comment after this.

rattlesnakedave··on GitHub Copilot isn't worth the risk
That's a hilarious expectation. How often do you give attribution to inventors of patterns you use in your software?
rattlesnakedave··on FTX used corporate funds to purchase employee homes, new filing shows
He’s pro crypto regulation (keep competitors out of his space), and fuck any regulation that might reveal his massive fraud.
rattlesnakedave··on GitHub Copilot isn't worth the risk
Do you find meaningful distinction between an individual reading your code and copying patterns vs an AI model doing the same?
rattlesnakedave··on GitHub Copilot isn't worth the risk
Reading about FOSS copyright is so exhausting. I find no meaningful distinction between reading code and learning from it, vs feeding it into a model. I’ve heard the “it spits out foss code verbatim” argument, and I really don’t buy that. I’ve never seen it. AI assisted software tooling is so powerful we really should consider the social benefits ahead of what is part of our existing legal framework.
rattlesnakedave··on FTX was registered with and licensed by the CFTC, which failed to regulate FTX
>No regulator in the world has successfully stopped a scam before people lost money (afaik). But if you establish some regulatory framework in which people have to disclose information, establishes capital rules, etc. then it makes that less likely.

Just trade on chain. Smart contracts are transparent by default.
