ratsbane··on Poll: Do you have a 3d printer?
I have an Solidoodle 2 also (see my other comment.) Which extruder are you using? I still have the original on mine. What about the 618? Where do you get it?
ratsbane··on Poll: Do you have a 3d printer?
I have a Solidoodle 2. I made a video demonstrating it here: http://youtu.be/Aafp7EnzmOY

I'm glad I got it. For me it's not much more than a toy but because of it I've gotten a much greater understanding of the 3d printer phenomenon, what it can do and can't do, etc.

ratsbane··on Older Is Wiser: Study Shows Software Developers’ Skills Improve Over Time
Yes. Twenty and even thirty years ago we did have essentially the same ML algorithms used in self-driving cars today, just not enough computing power to use them effectively (I think SVMs are only about 20 years old but neural nets have been around in some form since the late '50s) There is much to learn from those who have gone before.
ratsbane··on I am in competition with you for all sorts of experiences – you will lose
This reminds me Falken's law from War Games. True for many games: the best way to win is to not play.
ratsbane··on Bruce Eckel on why he's moving back to Windows from Mac
I'm surprised he's not more of a command-line guy. So many things I would hate to do without: vim, grep, ssh, rsync, git, tab completion, cron, .... I suppose you could install all of those and a lot more on Windows but what a lot of bother.
ratsbane··on TSA Accepting Public Comments On Whole Body Airport Screening
I always opt out, politely but firmly. I was flying out of SFO once last year when a TSA agent asked me "and your reason for opting out is...?" and I answered "...none of your business." He smiled and from his response I inferred that he approved of and appreciated my response.
ratsbane··on Intrade discovers a $700k cash shortfall
It is. It seems weird, but there it is... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fidelity_bond
ratsbane··on Show HN: HN Store
I had the mistaken impression it was against Amazon TOS to call attention to the links. After reading the TOS again, though, I think that would be ok from Amazon's perspective. There's a line between saying on the page "click these links so I'll make money" and saying the links are Amazon affiliate. Amazon TOS here: https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/gp/associates/help/oper...

Nice page, though. You should make money from it. How are you extracting the references to books from HN?

ratsbane··on 80 chars per line is great
If you're doing a lot of development on an eeePC then line length may not be your biggest obstacle.
ratsbane··on 80 chars per line is great
80 characters seems like such an arbitrary restriction. Once upon a time we were limited to 80 characters but we were also limited to monochrome ASCII text. Just as syntax highlighting improves readability, I think the occasional use of longer lines where appropriate improves readability - the shape of the code gives your eye additional clues about where you are in a section of code, allows you to have more lines on the screen at once, find what you're looking for faster, and isolates details that aren't crucial in getting the big picture. E.g. - inline lambdas or anonymous functions, strings, etc.

When I work on a codebase with formatting standards I try to follow them. This is 2013, though, and when I work on my own stuff I format it to get the most readability on my Macbook or 32" 1080p desktop screen, not a VT100 from 1987.

ratsbane··on A scientific accident that could change the world
Yes, sounds right. Quoting from the paper cited above "Thus, a device can be readily made by sandwiching an ion porous separator [Celgard 3501 (Celgard, Charlotte, NC)] between two identical LSG electrodes."
ratsbane··on A scientific accident that could change the world
Am I the only one to think "hey, I could try this at home?" 1) prepare carbon slurry 2) pour on dvd 3) etch with LightScribe DVD drive... 4) Peel of graphene layer ...?

I wonder what, exactly, goes into the carbon slurry and if it's necessary to etch a particular pattern with the LightScribe.

ratsbane··on Letter from MIT President on Releasing Aaron Swartz Documents
I'd have to think carefully about releasing names. Accountability without personal accountability is a bit shallow, though.
ratsbane··on Making the travel site people want, even if it’s impossible
Tried it just now. http://flisea.com was confused when I entered "San Francisco" as the destination; I had to enter "SFO" when what I really wanted was "SFO | SJC | OAK" and it never returned any flights. Adioso has room to improve their price search but the user interface is just what I want to use - no error messages, just does the best it can with what you give it.
ratsbane··on Making the travel site people want, even if it’s impossible
Very nice. This search works with the way I think. I remember being amazed when Kayak came out and again with Hipmunk. This might be next in that sequence.
ratsbane··on Sergey Brin, Please Pick up your Paychecks
It is really nice to have the original author show up and comment on something like this.

After looking at this site I started thinking about ways of crawling the whole database. The 500-record limit would make an alphabet tree crawl a bit more challenging but not too bad. Do you think the state agency would be amenable to requests for bulk download?

[edit] just saw your post which answered most of my questions while I was typing them.

ratsbane··on Deal would bring Google jets, millions of dollars to San Jose airport
No.
ratsbane··on Why you need a home lab to keep your job
I have six IBM 2U servers in my home rack (36U). They're really well-designed and the noise level is not too bad even in the room with the rack, but there is also a 1U SuperMicro server in that rack with two Tesla cards and it is so loud as to be quite annoying anywhere in the house. I keep it turned off unless I'm specifically working on it, which isn't how I'd like it to be. The lesson I learned is that bigger servers (4U would be even better) have bigger fans and run more quietly. Also IBM servers aren't as loud as Dell and Dell servers are quieter than SuperMicro. I'm thinking the next addition might be a cluster of Raspberry Pis.
ratsbane··on Details of Google's Project Glass revealed in FCC report
I don't think that's entirely correct, at least in the United States. As far as I understand the law, it IS legal to videorecord people, children and otherwise in public places with or without their permission and on private property under some conditions. I'm certainly not a legal expert and I would be interested in seeing any citations that might prove this wrong. Here are a few sources I found on the web:

http://communications-media.lawyers.com/privacy-law/Child-Ph... (note that according to this, in the state of Georgia and possibly New Jersey it may now be illegal to photograph children who aren't your own)

ratsbane··on Wikileaks Says Aaron Swartz Was a Possible Source
It could also be an effort to divert attention from some other Wikileaks source.
ratsbane··on My Web Series Was Suspended by YouTube Without Explanation
Given the nature of the internet, even that's not a fix. If you set up a server, your ISP could shut you off in response to DMCA demands. I suppose you could find an off-shore server, but nothing's foolproof.
ratsbane··on Plea Bargaining and Torture in light of the Aaron Swartz case
Perhaps someone here who actually is a lawyer can answer this or correct my understanding... Under current rules, any plea bargain offers by a prosecutor can't be introduced into the trial. What if that were changed? What if, at the same time a jury is told that the maximum sentence is 47 years imprisonment they were also told the details of any plea-bargain negotiations, such as that the prosecution had been willing to accept 3 months? Might this help to mitigate the perverse effects of the plea bargain system we have now?
ratsbane··on Petition the Whitehouse to remove Carmen Ortiz from office
I agree. This makes it all the more important that we, as a community, "send a message" by calling out her actions as unacceptable and by peacefully petitioning for her removal from office.
ratsbane··on Tips for Code Readability
Good points. I like the common-sense approach. Much better than rigid code guidelines that specify precisely when and where how much whitespace goes. If you read a lot of code you'll read code formatted with a lot of minor differences. It's good to get used to that. There are a lot of right ways of doing it.
ratsbane··on Milton Friedman's Thermostat
Exactly. This whole article could have been distilled down to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multicollinearity (but I still thought it was a good read)
ratsbane··on If Peter Thiel And Garry Kasparov Are Right, Then We're In Trouble
They're falling to an intrinsic bias - the technological advances we see are the ones that have already been made. Future advances haven't been made yet; effectively comparing sum(past_technological_advances) with sum(future_technological_advances)
ratsbane··on Makerbot announces new 3D printer: Replicator 2
Me too. My Solidoodle 2 arrived last week and I've kept it busy. So far I'm very pleased.

The Makerbot 2 does look very nice and I like the high resolution and larger build area - but I'm holding out for one with dual extruders.

ratsbane··on NSA Mimics Google, Pisses Off Senate
Interesting. I hadn't heard about the Oracle Nosql thing and that link didn't work for me, but this does: http://www.oracle.com/us/products/database/nosql/overview/in...

I wonder what's the story behind that.

ratsbane··on How to find an apartment in San Francisco during the tech boom
For parking near Nob Hill, the Sutter-Stockton garage is the best I've found so far at $350/month. It's close to the Financial District and doesn't smell as bad as some places around here. SF may have some advantages for tech businesses but there are a lot of very good reasons to not open an office here.
