rational-future··on Pluralsight raises $135M to expand online learning for professionals
Hmmm that's interesting. Almost any study I've seen implies that the most efficient way of learning is see-do. I think what makes Pluralsight and similar training videos work for me is having multiple big monitors (3x 27'') with the training video, IDE and browser easily visible at any time.

Unis lack professors with the practical knowledge of Pluralsight instructors and they are centered on areas like math and algorithms, that are fun, but not of much use for somebody building an enterprise CRUD site or mobile app. Knowing your IDE, the best way to accomplish a task in a given framework, how to work around limitations of tools and protocols IMHO is something unis don't teach much, while very important for the average Joe developer.

>> In other words, the "emitter" didn't just think of a word and that word somehow magically popped into the heads of the receivers. We're a loooooong way off from that.

No we're not, LOL. We already have it - it's called spoken language.

IMHO 3 months of hard work on Pluralsight courses can give one more practical programming skills than any 3 year Bachelor degree in CS. Debugging, CRUD, somewhat new JS/mobile frameworks are what the majority of software developers need to know for their 9 to 5 job.

Next March, when military budgets are decided, American taxpayers will get another 1.5 trillion bill, because Russia.

>> All software should be free

Fixed that for you, yours RMS ;-)

I'm a Windows user (go on, press the down arrow) and I don't care about app design. Give me military ship grey windows, text menus and a way to hide all icons. Windows 2000 was for me the apogee of 2D design.

NASA had/has 2 Orions: a "nuclear" and a "non-nuclear" ;-)
rational-future··on US to Stop Using Soyuz Spacecraft, Invest in Domestic Private Space Industry
It's hard to take the non-nuclear Orion seriously, knowing it's a product of W Bush's "space initiative".
rational-future··on US to Stop Using Soyuz Spacecraft, Invest in Domestic Private Space Industry
SpaceX looks to me like a software startup, that can clue a cheap, working hack from existing products. But Boing is a mega corp like Microsoft, Google, Intel that can create revolutionary new products from the ground up.

American of course: after the advertised end of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan a new enemy was urgently needed.
rational-future··on Announcing Calibre 2.0
The best way I know is to open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat and export to HTML. Then convert the HTML to epub or mobi in e-calibre.
rational-future··on Ignore No More – lock your child's device until they call you back
Hmmm, here's a business idea - install the app on as many phones as you can (remote exploits, free apps in stores) and demand monthly payments to keep them unlocked.
rational-future··on The Difference Between Working at Facebook, Google, and Microsoft
The returns are diminishing, but not by much for many people. E.g. a 100 hours work week having 2x the productivity of a 40 hours one (instead of 2.5x).

From my 30+ years of experience in the SW industry, a guy who works 100 hours will far outproduce someone working 37.5 or 40 hours and on top will improve his skills a lot faster.

rational-future··on Ask HN: Who do you use and recommend as a registrar?
Do you have a list of such TLDs?
rational-future··on Ask HN: When to hire a dedicated security engineer?
IMHO it's a matter of chance/game theory. Taking a proactive approach is expensive (security will slow down your development and operation) and most likely won't benefit you much.
rational-future··on Ask HN: When to hire a dedicated security engineer?
A good security guy (not someone who just has a ton of certifications) is very expensive. If you have to ask, you don't need one. That is unless your partners or clients demand one or you screwed big previously or you're in business under threat (e.g. of Chinese government interest).
rational-future··on Ask HN: Who do you use and recommend as a registrar?
namecheap.com

I only do 10 year registrations (SEO) and NameCheap has a big discount for those.
