rasjani··on A look at my BBS Software from '93
Pirated version of qemu was a thing for us non-amiga operators :)
rasjani··on Fossjobs: A website for free and open-source software jobs
Codemill also has github integration but it's not very actively used.
rasjani··on Sanakirja: Transactional, branchable key-value store in Rust
Sana kirja is word book but sanakirja is dictionary.
rasjani··on OpenXR – Cross-Platform, Portable, Virtual Reality
Name is quite similar to ILM's OpenEXR image format.
rasjani··on As a software engineer, what's the best skill to have for the next 5-10 years?
Many posts already mention these but in tl;dr: soft skills and ability and will to learn new things.
rasjani··on No CEO: A Swedish company where nobody is in charge
Company's salary and organization model is very similar some Finnish consultant companies. Vincit Helsinki at least.
rasjani··on 22 Years of Delphi and It Still Rocks
Code signing seems to be broken in every release in macqtdeploy.
rasjani··on Five arrests in 'fully loaded' Kodi streaming box raids
Or even other (scraped) content from legal sources/addons. My personal usecase is essentialy watching /r/video and my YouTube subscriptions from couch with a unified interface.
rasjani··on How Unix erases things when you type a backspace while entering text
I didn't read the article and all the comments but this is the sort of thing once again reminds that there's really nothing new in most of the new technologies :) Lets take Dom updates for example. Do you update the whole tree and rerender the whole screen or only the changed parts. Problem is essentially the "same" albeit tech and corner cases have their own set of differences. Next, consider that maybe your browser is just more fancier terminal and webserver is just evolution of old mainframes.

Well, that's just my way of thinking but because way of thinking and having started my career writing unix applications, I still can maintain my interest in latest 'trends' and at least feel that I have something to contribute when trend seems to gear towards hiring younger and younger devs.

rasjani··on Things Every Hacker Once Knew
As having seen and being part of the start, rise and fall of certain scene of genre of music, this article provided a great piece to reflect upon how and what really did happen :)
rasjani··on Stop starting from scratch when you write
Didnt read your article yet but.

As a amateur song writer, i try to write snippets of lyrics down as they come. Whenever I'm trying to finish something but can't think of anything suitable, I have my rhyme book with tons of stuff to refer to. In some cases it doesn't even have to be quotes from what I've already written down that I might end up using. It could be word/rhyme/rhythm patterns that i pick up from material that I have available.

So yeah I concur with the title of the article. :)

rasjani··on Peloton – a relational database designed for autonomous operation
Peloton is also Finnish word and it means 'fearless'
rasjani··on Turbo Pascal Compiler (2013)
First ever paid lines of code: in pascal, for pharmacy. Albeit, i did stock ordering portion. Stock only had 300baud demodulator so all verifications had to done by eavesdropping the line with phone and if one didn't hear the correct signal, you had to press keyboard to retrigger the batch again. I had to code all this blind too because there was no test environment :)
rasjani··on Threaded messaging comes to Slack
Came to mention Flowdock and ask for comparison. On busy channels 'flows' where really good feature. Too bad the product is not that known.
rasjani··on Go Proposal: Accept GitHub PRs
Phabricator is shit from my experience but only used it with svn backend. Gerrit's main downside for me personally is that the web interface captures bowsers search function. While it's nice, I don't like my 'os' level functionality to be overwritten.
rasjani··on Finland launches trial program to pay unemployed citizens a basic monthly income
Majority of those who have been chosen to the study seem to be unemployed or at least not fully employed. Currently many here in Finland seem to consider that working even some odd hours is not beneficial because it would cut down their benefits. With basic income, one gets that benefit + it encourages people to find even temp jobs because it means more money which hopefully will cut down long term unemployment.
rasjani··on How Skype fixes security vulnerabilities
Lync (Skype for business) has been The Worst support that I've ever dealt with.
rasjani··on Tim Cook assures employees that Apple is committed to the Mac
Trackpads (buttons) on thinkpads are not well designed and I doubt anyones mental health who says otherwise.
rasjani··on Frequent sauna bathing can reduce the risk of dementia
It used to be, and
rasjani··on Git Cheat Sheet
I commit often in scenarios where feature I'm working on is complicated and I've broken it down to smaller tasks. When I finish one task A and move on to B, I might end up in situation where A is not actually supporting B so I might need to refactor A . So when I finish A,B and C, refactoring for for A is not needed anymore and in this point, if I wouldn't have the history of modifications to A, I would need to rewrite it, or at least parts instead of just reverting.

And finally, I squash all commits to a single feature commit.

rasjani··on Spotify might be killing SSDs by design errors?
ex-mixradio guy here, MS didnt kill it really - they "sold" is to Line Corporation which eventually killed us ..
rasjani··on How I learned to program
You can give few neat basic commands of basic git usage but many people just nope out after git add -A . and never learn how to actually use it. It's god awful to actually realize that your peers are not capable or willing to do more.
rasjani··on Show HN: Carbide – A New Programming Environment
There is, or was IDE with the same name: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbide.c%2B%2B
rasjani··on Ask HN: Is it possible to run your own mail server for personal use?
Each of the points mentioned in the post you replied to contribute to the decision if big players mark your mails as spam or not.
rasjani··on Lisp: it's not about macros, it's about READ (2012)
Nokia released and feature phones still being sold under its brand are made with lisp. Ofcourse it's not the whole platform, mainly the UI and some glue components but essentially, all major work was written in lisp with some extensions.
rasjani··on Nike Open Source Software
But their practices regarding their 'hardware' is not so cool. http://www.wired.com/2015/04/dmca-ownership-john-deere/
rasjani··on Microsoft is cutting 1,000 jobs in Finland as it stops phone production
I was also in Ruoholahti at the time and while those where dreadful times, it wasn't as bad (Atleast for me) as you picture it. Yeah, MeeGo (well, it was Harmattan, there was nothing MeeGo except binary compatibility and using the name to please Intel). Formatting Linux laptops was more of a joke imho. And guys who started Jolla where really not high execs in the program - really good tech guys but not execs :)

But yeah, I got myself a transfer inside Nokia after harmattan program was finished (still working on Linux stuff). Was away for few years and went back few months before Microsoft bought us, laid us off and our dept. spun off. During those times I didn't see any change on how things where handled from old Nokia days. So anyone who says that they didn't see this final layoff round coming is blind AF.
