rasengan0··on The rise of universities’ diversity bureaucrats (2018)
>...said 'we can do better'...

20+ years in the same company, never heard this phrase spoken by HR until the DEI craze.

Now 'we can do better' is Newspeak for more surveys, townhalls, implicit bias training, more 'education' that cuts out working time in the limited hours.

Bureaucracy is a Pyrrhic victory.

Disclaimer: No disrespect or offense to Molossian descendants https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molossians meant in usage of the term Pyrrhic

Great article and highlights the cyclical hype of PKMS. I use FountainPens and Paper. RandyPausch was/is a TimeManagement guru and inspires. https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~pausch/ KeepItSimple. rasengan0··on Ask HN: Has anyone here turned around their life in their 40s?
Do not overlook serendipity (the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way.)

My entire life 20 years ago was changed by a dance class to get more social activity absent from a breakup. Therapy, spiritual counsel, exercise, diet, rest, nature, purpose, social network, death of loved ones, illness, blah, blah blah all may have had their place, but it was only circumstance that I truly believe that mattered looking back 50 years on.

Life is precious and easy to take for granted. And yet there is every opportunity to find meaning. Perhaps that is the way it works, take time for yourself, be open to what comes: all the suffering and joy that is here.

Peace be with you

rasengan0··on On the subject of earwax and unsupported medical arguments
I agree with the author, "you shouldn’t listen to me over actual doctors"

The article completely misses the medicolegal aspect of do no harm.

Not sure why people would risk safeguarding one of their main senses in name of "There’s Basically No Evidence For This"

Ignorant is, as ignorant does. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Has anyone seen blood leaking out of the ear when the crochet hook was retracted? How about stench of pus and dealing with infection from toothpicks, q-tips, bobby hairpins and other assorted instruments. Doctors and other providers see this more frequently than probably most HN readers.

As a former ex-NP student, I know syringe irrigation works, the patient was profusely 'life altering' thankful with a souvenir chunk of cerumen to prove it.

I really believe it takes real world experience, personal or clinical to provide evidence of outcomes, until then Dr. Google, like talk is cheap.

OR

dismiss clinical experience, keep on with the internet home remedies and support your local EENTs to clean up the mess :-)

Save water and the planet

Perfect passive cooking works, years tested: 500g of pasta + 1-1.2 L of water cooked in a pressure cooker under high setting for 2 mins with natural release. (edit: setup is defunct Fagor + induction cooker)

It's just that simple and no water to discard except through GI tracts.

rasengan0··on Ask HN: How to become good at Emacs/Vim?
Tired of the bloat, overhead and friction of using everything else, gui, I realize what really endures for me.

Keeping it simple and staying in the terminal (tmux, vim, fzf, rg, etc) slowly and incrementally over 18 yrs it just makes sense. It is not about good, but about what's comfortable and known, like learning a language; there's always something new and fun to incorporate. Despite years with emacs-nox, Orgmode, EvilMode and DoomEmacs, I kept returning and staying in vim. Old habits, die hard.

rasengan0··on Users reporting artifacts appearing in old images stored in Google Photos
This is normal. I found out that Google Photos has limited reliability. My 2007 photo was garbaged into a lower resolution. I have since recovered from the original drive. Back then Google Photos gave an option to store in lower res but still sufficient high quality or original quality. Don't trust either. Lesson: backup to your media you own or print it.

rasengan0··on H-m-m: Hackers mind map
Literally, today, was thinking about leveraging $tree for mindmapping when this dropped: Poor mans mind mapping tool with just the terminal [1] having been inspired by h-m-m (hackers mind map) [2]

Went with VimOutliner [3] instead which is one less thing to install and fits so well with a tmux-vim setup.

Now all that is missing a sparse tree mode like OrgMode that beats out tabs and splits [4]

rasengan0··on Thinking with pen and paper
"I remember in my college chemistry classes, we were instructed never to tear off or hide any error we made in our lab notebooks. Instead, we should mark it with a strikethrough. "

+1 OMG Chemistry notebooks FTW. I was always a pencil person and when the professor literally made us cross out our mistakes it felt gross to see the wasted space for 'nonsense', so inefficient. Only later I come to realize that all creation is not for naught. Observations made and recorded for the record are invaluable when seen from a different time perspective. If DNA can have built in redundancy, then evolution is revealing a good lesson to replicate for note taking as well.

People's time horizons are too short when thinking about so called 'ultimate' note taking/brainstorming/productivity solutions. What system did Grace Hopper use? Feynmann?

I can take a trip to Mom's and fetch that chemistry notebook to retrieve that 1980s information. No retro hardware, searching for encryption keys, old floppy disk/zip drive media players, no defunct internet companies to contact about 'my' data, proprietary formats to parse, etc. Open that 40 year old notebook and read it.

To be sure, I own the iPads/android tablets, note apps, desktop apps, wikis, cloud services and other digital debris that in the end is/was wasted friction, $$$ and energy. Too many dependencies.

I stick with a low-end laptop with plain text on vim and emacs -nox and (mobile) self-made paper notebooks and enjoyable wonderful fountain pens [1] I'm really trying to look back toward memory like the ancients but that is the ultimate practice.[2]

Life is too short to conform to digital tools. Enjoy both! There is much forgotten freedom to be rediscovered with the analog hand.

rasengan0··on The richer people get, the more meat they eat
I thought about adding the author wikipedia link with the article link to the email to my carnivore/omnivore friends but removed it because it does not matter, data don't lie.

It reminds me of the transition of eminence based medicine to evidence based medicine. Even the latter has had its troubles, just look at science publishing and questioning of the peer review framework.

Being vegan is a choice not a religion or cult. However much benefit I get from eating plants over animals and their products, I don't expect others to easily 'see the light'. Thankfully my eating behavior was influenced by others, slowly and with patience waay before the hype and this article.

Vegan promoters really need to work on their PR.

rasengan0··on “Amateur” programmer fought cancer with 50 Nvidia Geforce 1080Ti
Thank you for all your efforts and significant work. The intent and selfless dedication is moving. As grandma would say, talk does not cook rice. As a former student RN caring for patients at UCSF Neurosurgery & Neurology I witnessed a lot of research innovation on the "hardware" side when the "god" of last hope did grand rounds [1] One could only imagine something like this in the early 90s, software as another adjunct layer to the overall care approach. How can clinicians diagnose and treat if the patient has not been admitted into the point of service? Data driven approaches like yours would have saved a lot of $$$/RIP to increase awareness leading to early detection and care access. Pioneers shine a light for others to see, may detractors never have to face an unintended LP. [2]
