rapsacnz··on Is Ford about to reinvent the bicycle derailleur?
Pretty sure that this is not going to work very well - Time taken to heat a wire is probably slower than a servo motor. Energy taken to heat the wire is also likely to be more than that required by an electric motor. Also, this seems to be for a front 2 ring derailleur - which noone even uses anymore. If you tried to make this work for a modern rear derailleur, you'd need a lot of wire.
rapsacnz··on The Sweden experiment: how no lockdowns led to mental health, healthier economy
What??!! What I'm hearing when you say "If you factor out all those deaths" is "Old people don't count". Economically they may not have as much impact as younger people, but they provide richness to family and community life that can't be replaced.

So I guess my point is - you can't factor out those 10x people. Because they are dead.

rapsacnz··on WTF Happened in 1971? (2019)
Pretty sure that the cost of energy underpins almost everything we do or produce. I can't think of a single example that doesn't have a large energy component. For example, health insurance is made up of the cost of paying people and creating medicines - and ultimately, it comes back to food, extracting raw materials and paying down debt, all of which are affected by the price of energy. So dropping energy costs will eventually make most stuff cheaper (or make more money for rich people :( )
rapsacnz··on No Hello (2013)
People who just say "Hi" to me often don't get an answer at all.

I don't want to risk someone interrupting my chain of thought with some request that I can't / don't want to act on.

But if I respond to a "Hi" and then decide that I don't want to deal with the actual question, that's perceived as rude.

If you ask the question straight out, then I can decide to respond or not.

The German panzers were better than any comparable tanks at the start of WWII, but they were still a bunch of Nazis.
rapsacnz··on Why does drug resistance easily evolve but vaccine resistance does not?
I like to use a conflict analogy: A drug is a weapon exploiting one weakness of the enemy. A vaccine is a visual identification of the enemy, passed on to special forces (your immune system). A single weakness can often be changed easily, but it's harder to shake off special forces.
rapsacnz··on Tesla announces biggest quarterly loss
Who cares about their loss if Elon is blasting cars into space? How can you get better marketing than that?
rapsacnz··on Jewelbots – A Friendship Bracelet You Can Code
Good point - I suppose I really meant they are channelled in certain "girly" directions when you could argue that there are other valid (and also "girly") directions also. And yes, I will support whatever way they choose to express themselves. Gender issues are tough!
rapsacnz··on Jewelbots – A Friendship Bracelet You Can Code
As a proud dad of 3 incredible girls, I am very glad this product exists. I understand the argument that it would be great to not have gendered products at all meaning kids could choose what they want without any outside influence.

Unfortunately, we don't live in that world yet (and it could be a while off) In the meantime, I can now buy a product that:

1. Encourages my girls to get into STEM. 2. Is not a hard sell.

My girls are socialized to like girly stuff. I am only partly responsible for this - the outside pressures and influences on my children are huge and very hard to resist.

So you could argue that this product is a compromise, but it's one I'll gladly make.

rapsacnz··on Lopifit – The Electric Walking Bike
I thought one of the main benefits of riding a bike was taking the load off your hips/knees/ankles. Which this bike mostly negates. Plus it's probably pretty expensive, given it's an e-bike.
rapsacnz··on Ask HN: Did your life as a parent affected your life as a developer?
Your commute is costing you around 10K per year, just for direct costs such as car and fuel. Then you have indirect costs such as: -lost time which you can probably put a dollar figure on (esp if you are using some of that time for a side project that may one day have value) Then finally there are the intangible costs: -lower fitness, meaning more sickness, more medical bills. -a less fullfilling relationship with your wife and kids -stress of the commute, also contributing to poor health.

Basically you should go to your boss, if possible and ask to work from home - you could even take a 10K pay cut and it would make no difference financially.

I've worked from home for 10+ years and it's great. You should do it if at all possible.

rapsacnz··on North Korea’s Missile Launches Were Failing Too Often
They don't need concrete information - it's not a criminal trail. Simply the knowledge of the existence of a program is easily enough to derail it.
rapsacnz··on Donald Trump Is Elected President
@gragas I think to some extent, all of us are racist. Plus, unconscious bias is pretty much ubiquitous. I think you have to be more specific that saying that you are not racist.
