rapidaneurism··on An algorithmic failure beneath the secret ballot
I feel a bit silly, but I do not understand how the results were verified.
rapidaneurism··on An algorithmic failure beneath the secret ballot
An added benefit of voter id is that by making it easy or cheap for one groups and difficult or expensive for an other (or choosing acceptable IDs that already have these characteristics) you can create some friction to make it more difficult for the wrong people to vote.

That is why I like voter ID if it relies on documents provided for free with minimal fuss.

rapidaneurism··on RIP, vector database
Steelmaning it: perhaps people who cannot write to save their life are tired of grammar Nazis correcting them? (Admittedly since the llms I have noticed less and less people being pedantic about these things, perhaps it is like the ill fitting cupboard door signaling that this is handmade)
rapidaneurism··on America.gov
If I instruct an employee to prioritize my profit in a way that opens both of us to criminal prosecution, there is a non zero chance of them whistle blowing or even cooperating with the authorities to prosecute me.

I don't see such a path with an llm.

rapidaneurism··on Warez: The Infrastructure and Aesthetics of Piracy (2021)
And most people do not have guards and dogs walking around the perimeter, but we still blame the burglars for breaking in their houses.
rapidaneurism··on Government sponsored study on alcohol doesn't stand up to scrutiny
Arguably when left alive your health is by definition better than the alternative.

I suspect you mean the good health for a few months before death compared with a worse health during and after treatment. Still I had to make the quip.

rapidaneurism··on AI has access to a vastly larger working memory than the human brain
Same experience here, but it only works in some fields like physics and maths. it totally fails in fields that are "made up" with no rhyme or reason.
rapidaneurism··on Hackers Stalked Me by Hijacking a Smartwatch for Kids
I see an opportunity for an import hurdle masquerading as a security compliance mark on all Chinese imports.

I doubt it will be implemented as there are no western cheap gadget industries left to lobby for it, and the big players would prefer the fud of buy cheap be tracked.

rapidaneurism··on Some car companies are operating without regard for a declining customer base
The parents buy the new car and keep the older one for the teenager.
rapidaneurism··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
Great points, but I think that banning open source databases would have been better not for employees, but for shareholders.
rapidaneurism··on Qwen 3.8
The response was similar when the new grock came out.
rapidaneurism··on When can a power company take your land for data center infrastructure?
Does it matter for training?
rapidaneurism··on NYC may require landlords and realtors to disclose the use of AI in listings
I thought it was illegal in new york (and probably the rest of the us) to give legal advice if not a lawyer.

And in my understanding interpreting the law as opposed to just reciting it constitutes legal advice.

rapidaneurism··on Evidence of inconsistencies in evaluation process and selection of winners
What if the slop PRs come from your super?
rapidaneurism··on Teen hackers who live streamed cyber-attack on TfL jailed
Unless it is to trick them into resetting a password over the phone that is
rapidaneurism··on Data centers have hiked electricity prices on the public by $23B
If a gornment changed policy to make houses depreciate like cars, it would not be a government for long.

And the car analogy is n9t fitting, unless we talk about cars bundled with the parking spot. But then they would not depreciate that much, and the banger with a parking spot in Manhattan would cost more than the Ferrari that could only park in shitsville.

rapidaneurism··on Data centers have hiked electricity prices on the public by $23B
What a smart idea! As a home owner I approve of this way to keep supply out of the market (or at least make it expensive enough to prop my price up). Can we invent any more charges?
rapidaneurism··on AI changes the economics of software rewrites
Would putting that in black and white in the comments around then controller help?
rapidaneurism··on New Sweden: the US's long-lost 'secret' colony
I had the impression that (at least some of) those groups contain people of mixed ancestry including European ancestry.

Am I wrong? Is the child of a white person and a black person not considered black in the US? Is that not the case form the other groups too?

rapidaneurism··on Zuckerberg's war on whistleblowers
I think that there is a difference between someone that really believes they are all that and their sycophants clap, and the person in power knowingly making their underlings agree that the bright thing in the sky at noon is the moon.
rapidaneurism··on Zuckerberg 'Admits' Meta's Layoffs Were Ineffective
If you view AI as a way to downsize and cut payroll expenses without admitting that you must cut payroll expenses because the business is not booming, it makes sense.
rapidaneurism··on PeerTube is a free, decentralized and federated video platform
And if they dare touch controversial topics it demonitises them automatically. I find it hilarious that people self censor or invent new terms (like euphemisms for suicide).

How do people running an instance not fall foul of all the protect the children UK legislation? Will peers also be done by the UK regulator, or only hosts?

rapidaneurism··on We Are the Last People Who Know How It Works
Similar experience in the 90s, but we don't really know the intricacies of doping silicone, or smelting metal to make the pins. And what about mining it?

I think the last time people knew how things were made was in preindustrial societies because they had to build everything themselves (whatever little things they had)

rapidaneurism··on US Supreme Court Just Blew Up EU-US Data Transfers
Do they mob potential Johns?
rapidaneurism··on 30-year sentence for transporting zines is a five-alarm fire for free speech
>It is logically inconsistent, IMO, to both want to fight a system, and want to be afforded its privileges.

But isn't this exactly what people do when they vote for a different government?

rapidaneurism··on Philae's extraordinary comet landing relived (2024)
What nobody mentioning the guy's shirt?
rapidaneurism··on The 'papers, please' era of the internet will decimate your privacy
There is a bootlegger and baptist thing going on here. One understandable point of view is that of parents that control their kids' phones, but other parents in the community do not. Then their kids are the only ones in the class without tiktok or Instagram or something.

For those parents life is easier if nobody is allowed on these things.

rapidaneurism··on 'Ghost jobs' could soon be illegal in New York
I suspect they would hire a Nobel laureate that was willing to work as an unpaid intern.
rapidaneurism··on Apple is about to make Hide My Email useless
I think there is plenty of people, but they have these obscene demands about getting paid a living wage.
