raphaelj··on EU countries already hitting some of their sustainable energy targets for 2030
> is going to be extremely high to make it profitable to build a plant that only runs 3% of the time.

It's probably fine, as the cost of renewable electricity is now lower than the fuel cost (aka the variable cost) of these plants.

In a lot of places, it's now cheaper to run a gas plant with renewables than without, as the build costs of the renewables is lower than the cost of the fuel they prevent to get burned.

"Au large" is an French expression and can be translated by "At sea" or "Off-shore".
raphaelj··on Date recordings from background noises – DateThis.app
Where are you located? I do not have full coverage of all countries: https://datethis.app/about#coverage

Some smartphones or apps also do not record the full audio spectrum. iPhones works well, but Android support is not as good.

Hi author here,

This is a hobby project I've been working on for a few months. AMA !

raphaelj··on Future power systems with today's weather
Looks like the demands gets lower over the years, so my guess is that the stress on storage and hydrogen gets lower, and thus the price lower too
raphaelj··on Buffett once bet $1M that he could beat a group of hedge funds over 10 years
Your graph does not show the real return of the SP500, as it does not include dividends.
raphaelj··on Volkswagen, Porsche, and Audi say they will use Tesla's EV charging plug
I don't own any electric car. What are the advantages and disadvantages of Tesla's standard vs CCS2 (pretty common in Europe as far as I know) ?
raphaelj··on Microsoft nears glass storage breakthrough; could make ransomware attacks harder
What are the advantages of this compared to cheap writable optical disks (DVD, Blueray ...)?
raphaelj··on Are electric cars too expensive to tempt motorists away from petrol vehicles?
"Politicians in Europe know they will eventually have to impose taxes on electricity (or else raise income taxes)"

I heard that a lot, but are we sure about this?

Petrol in Europe is taxed at about 50%, but is almost exclusively imported, thus this is the only income for gouvernements.

Electricity, on the other side, is also taxed (about 25% here in Belgium). But's it's almost entirely produced in the Union, which creates additional income and thus taxes. In the end the government income generated by electricity production is most probably around 50% too.

Add to that the external costs of petrol cars that electric cars don't have (at least not as much), such as the huge impact of pollution on the healthcare sector, climate change, or the negative import balance caused by the import of fossil fuel... And it might well be that electric vehicles will be a better deal overall tax wise.

raphaelj··on Unattractive funds managers outperform funds with attractive managers by over 2%
Is it 2% or 2 percentage points?

Like, if the attractive fund manager gets a 4% ROI, is the unattractive one getting 6% or 4.08% (0.08 is 2% of 4%).

raphaelj··on Engineers harvest clean, continuous energy from air
Something similar happened when I put a dehumidifier in my bedroom.

Basically, I noticed that the room was heating significantly when I turned it on. Way faster than what you should expect from its power usage (about 250W avg.).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but by converting air moisture to liquid water using a compressor, the dehumidifier is releasing the latent energy of water vapor (0.627Wh/L) in addition to its own energy usage.

I measured that my dehumidifier required +/- 1kW/h to get 1L of liquid water from the room. This it's overall heating efficiency is about 1.6x, which is way better than any electric heating system that is not an heat-pump.

raphaelj··on Mistral: Our first AI endpoints are available in early access
Do we have estimates of the energy requirements for these models?

I just did some napkin math, looks like inference on a 30B model with a GTX 4090 should get you about 30 tokens/sec [1], or 100k tokens/hour.

Considering such systems consume about 1 kW, that's about 10 kWh/1M tokens.

Based on the current cost of electricity, I don't think anyone could get below 2 ~ 4 $ per 1M token for a 30B model.

raphaelj··on Japan automakers play catch-up in EV race
I had the same thoughts a few years ago.

The winner will not be the first one to the market, but the one at the right time with the best car on the market.

raphaelj··on First planned small nuclear reactor plant in the US has been canceled
Actually quite the opposite. The EPR cost less per GW than what was announced for these.
raphaelj··on FFmpeg is getting multithreaded transcoding pipelines
No, but they do not provide the data in real time.
raphaelj··on FFmpeg is getting multithreaded transcoding pipelines
For Europe, there are academic and public organizations that publish these ENF backlog since about 2017.

For US, I couldn't find any open dataset. For these regions, I'm basically recording the sound of an A/C motor to get the reference data, but I only have a few months of backlog.

See here for the coverage of the webapp: https://datethis.app/coverage

raphaelj··on FFmpeg is getting multithreaded transcoding pipelines
Well, that's the very specific command I'm using in one of my webapps (https://datethis.app), and it's one of the main performance hotspots, so it's very *not* immaterial.
raphaelj··on FFmpeg is getting multithreaded transcoding pipelines
About 2x faster on my 4-cores ARM server, without any significant parallelism overhead:

    $ time ffmpeg_threading/ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -ar 1000 -vn -acodec flac -f flac -y /dev/null -hide_banner -loglevel quiet
    14.90s user 2.08s system 218% cpu 7.771 total

    $ time ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -ar 1000 -vn -acodec flac -f flac -y /dev/null -hide_banner -loglevel quiet
    14.05s user 1.80s system 114% cpu 13.841 total
raphaelj··on Can solar and wind power Britain? An update of David MacKay's numbers
From what I understand, these TWhs refer to total energy usage, not electricity usage.

If you replace a ICE by an BEV powered by solar cells, you actually reduce the total TWhs because of efficiecy:

- ICE: 6L of gasoline per 100km, that equals to about 60 KWh

- BEV: 17KWh for the same distance.

The same applies to heat-pumps and some industrial processes.

raphaelj··on Escort carrier
It can still work somewhat great for parts of the economy.

E.g. healthcare, education, utility...

raphaelj··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (Sept 2023)
I'm working an a web app than tries to date audio and video recordings based on the network grid's noise.

https://datethis.app

I'm still working on improving the UX and the DSP. I made the DSP part open source.

raphaelj··on Nvidia on the Mountaintop
What if there is no money to win, but only a huge risk for big loss of market share for FAMG companies if they don't get of the AI train?

Google Search might not earn more money it does now by buying Nvidia devices, but might loose big to a competitor if it does not.

raphaelj··on SpaceX working with Cloudflare to speed up Starlink service
My guess is that they do not.

Routing these packets around the planet would be a huge waste of their limited electrical and transmission resources.

raphaelj··on Ask HN: Tell us about your project that's not done yet but you want feedback on
I'm writing a open-source library (https://github.com/RaphaelJ/libhum/) and a webapp (https://datethis.app:8080/) that detects the Utility Grid noise emitted by electrical devices (A/C, motors, appliances ...) from Video/Audio recording.

It then tries to date the recording by matching it to historical data.

The signal processing part is getting decent. I'm still trying to collect more reference signals in RU, UK, China and Japan.

Tom Scott made a video about the idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0elNU0iOMY

raphaelj··on GPU-Accelerated LLM on an Orange Pi
Thanks for the answer.

> Any small computer with AMD Phoenix offers a much better GPU performance per dollar than any NVIDIA Orin.

> The use of NVIDIA Orin is justified only when one needs a device that is qualified for an automotive environment.

Nvidia Orin will use significantly less energy though.

raphaelj··on GPU-Accelerated LLM on an Orange Pi
Any idea how the GPU compares to the Nvidia's Jetson series?
raphaelj··on Speed Test
That's how TCP works.

TCP initially starts with a small transmission buffer (the congestion window), and gradually increases its size until it starts getting errors (packet drops or reordering).

raphaelj··on Duck DNS
I've been using Duckdns for a few months, I cannot recommend more!
raphaelj··on Twitter’s Rebrand to X Could Be a Trademark Nightmare Thanks to Microsoft
Musk took over Tesla a few months after the Model S got announced. By that time, one could expect that most of the development teams and roadmaps were well in place.
raphaelj··on Twitter’s Rebrand to X Could Be a Trademark Nightmare Thanks to Microsoft
I fail to understand how these could have been the results of vested interests from existing structures, and not Musk's questionable behavior:

- insulting a kid saving cave-diver a pedo;

- getting into a buying agreement with Twitter's shareholders, as a "joke";

- repeatedly asserting that FSD is a solved problem, and will be production ready in 6 months, for 6 years;

- repeatedly claiming to be free speech, but continuously enforcing politically backed censorship over Twitter;

- refusing to pay Twitter' suppliers.
