rantwasp··on Apple CSAM Detection – Technical Summary [pdf]
if you believe their paper no. it’s gonna land in ios 15. they have to ship the db and enable the functionality.

also this applies to new pictures (not what you already have)

again, if you believe what they are sharing

rantwasp··on Apple CSAM Detection – Technical Summary [pdf]
The Big Brain Scheme Apple uses for their CSAM stuff.

Summary for the lazy: - this is going to be out in ios15

- Apple will build and push a database of hashes with every update

- these hashes will be used to verify against the pics before they are uploaded to icloud and generate a "voucher"

- once a certain threshold of vouchers is passed, Apple will be able to decrypt the pictures in questions (all this discussion seems to assume Apple does not have access to icloud pictures - so maybe they are preparing to rollout full encrypted backups???)

- the crypto stuff is interesting

- the scary part is that there is nothing preventing Apple to do the same thing with other thing on your phone (assuming there is a way to generate a good enough matching hash - I can see how this could be easily extended to basically anything that's stored on the phone)

rantwasp··on Apple's plan to “think different” about encryption opens a backdoor to your life
> Apple is trying their best to thread the needle, providing as much privacy as possible while plausibly covering their bases so congress won't pass onerous and privacy stripping laws.

There is the problem right there. How can you tell that Apple is doing their best to preserve privacy vs doing their best to server their own interests?

If congress passes laws, those laws are in the open and we have a whole process dedicated to passing new laws. Here is something you maybe did not consider: passing those laws would be hard impossible without basically sacrificing any political capital the washed up political class still has in today's US (have you noticed how even the smallest issues is a big political issue and how congress doesn't seem to get much done nowadays?)

The 2nd part is that not the DOJ, FBI, NSA doing their job is the problem. The problem is mass surveillance. The same mass surveillance we have been subjected to keeps getting expanded to the point you will no longer be able to think anything else except what's approved by the people in power (if you think the thought police is a ridiculous concept, we are definitely heading that way).

Apple's shtick was that they cared about privacy. If they didn't do that dog and pony show maybe I would have written this off as "corporations being corporations". Now they don't get that.

> If you don't want to use cloud photo services because you don't like the implications, they are very upfront; disable iCloud photos. You don't seem to get it. It's not about some fucking photos. Who cares. It's about what this open the door to. And about how this is going to be abused and expanded by "law enforcement".

In a world where you have shit like Pegasus and mass surveillance, you are one API call away from going to jail without even knowing what triggered it and being able to defend yourself. Probable cause? Fuck that. Everyone is guilty until proven innocent.

rantwasp··on Apple's plan to “think different” about encryption opens a backdoor to your life
nah. this is not how trust works. if Apple does stuff like this, I stop trusting Apple. Binary. Trust of No Trust.

Who is to say once they start doing this they will not extend their capabilities and monitor everything on the device? This is the direction we’re heading in.

For me this is my last iphone. And probably my last mac. the hardware is nice, shiny ams usable but you cannot do shit like this after you sell everyone on privacy.

What would a company that cares about privacy do? you don’t scan any of my things without explaining why and getting my consent. That’s privacy

rantwasp··on Apple plans to scan US iPhones for child abuse imagery
i feel better already /s think about the children!! also, think about poor law enforcement and their mass surveillance attempts. throw them a bone!
rantwasp··on Simple Systems Have Less Downtime (2020)
essential complexity == simplicity. Make it as simple as it can be but not simpler.

To me it’s sort of implied that it’s unneeded complexity when we talk about it as something that should not be there and it’s making our life hard.

rantwasp··on The CDC Needs to Stop Confusing the Public
lookup what CDC, the initials stand for.

They have failed miserably both at controlling the spread of the disease and informing the public.

Instead of focusing on what they should be doing they are playing the politics and the CYA game. Disgusting.

rantwasp··on Infrastructure bill cryptocurrency surveillance provision is a privacy disaster
You’re being selective.

Crypto transfers are slow? jesus, did tou ever do a wire? have you seen moving something take days? compared to that minutes is instant.

You’re gonna tell me about CC processing next. Hate to break it to you but when you’re paying with a CC you’re not actually paying. An auth happens but the real payment happens when the transaction is settled (days later). So: days vs minutes in BTC case. wow, crypto sooo slow.

Macro economic policy? Oh yeah. That is working really really well. The government working to protect you.

rantwasp··on Infrastructure bill cryptocurrency surveillance provision is a privacy disaster
Guns do a lot of good? I’m sorry we’re probably living in different universes. In my, I see school shootings after school shooting with lots of thoughts and prayers sprinkled in between. It’s the best guns+religion==winning!

> no one is trying to ban crypto no one is trying to ban it yet. I’m giving it 5 years until it’s outright banned.

Also, if you cripple something to the point where it’s unusable it’s virtually the same as banning it.

rantwasp··on Infrastructure bill cryptocurrency surveillance provision is a privacy disaster
Okay. Let’s play the: X is causing more harm to society than good.

X=guns Are guns causing more harm than good? Should we ban guns?

X=religion. Is religion causing more harm than good? Should we ban any form of religion?

X=social media. Is social media causing more harm than good? I heard Facebook consumes more power than the entire state of Argentina! Should we ban Facebook?

X=USD the dollar. 95% of criminal activity uses USD. 95%! It’s clear to me that if no dollar we could prevent a lot of criminal activity. Should we ban the USD?

X=VPNs Used to circumvent local laws!!! Are the causing more harm than good? Ban VPNs you say?

rantwasp··on Infrastructure bill cryptocurrency surveillance provision is a privacy disaster
I think it’s a classic example of myopically focusing on some aspects of a technology while missing the entire point.

You’ll hear about net benefits to society (like those are easy to measure), about power consumption (like all if a sudden everyone is an arbiter of the market and decided: too much power), about how it’s a ponzi scheme (without understanding what a ponzi scheme is). All talking point of the anti-cryptocurrency agenda.

Curious to see how/if this changes in the next 5-10 years.

rantwasp··on Bacon may disappear in California as pig rules take effect
that was always an option to stop the discussion.

I mean CDC lied about COVID repeatedly and issued guidance that was disastrous. Remember the whole “you don’t need masks unless you’re a doctor” in the beginning? How about withholding critical information about spread? How about underreported numbers? CDC is at this point a clown gathering and have 0 credibility. 0

rantwasp··on Bacon may disappear in California as pig rules take effect
normally I would just say: appeal to authority, but since it’s the CDC and they have royalty screwed up the pandemic response I’m gonna go the extra mile: “fuck the CDC”
rantwasp··on Bacon may disappear in California as pig rules take effect
i don’t know. i’m open to change my mind but i have not learned anything new unfinished.
rantwasp··on Bacon may disappear in California as pig rules take effect
you missed the 2nd part: access to a nutritionist or have a lot of knowledge about nutrition yourself.

there is no way average joe can figure all these things out on a limited budget + limited time

evolutionary considerations are a part if everything. you cannot ignore how you got here and biology

also, start with this and do a bit of research:

rantwasp··on Bacon may disappear in California as pig rules take effect
vegetarian!=vegan
rantwasp··on Bacon may disappear in California as pig rules take effect
i would soften this a bit. If you’re not willing to delegate the killing (fully understanding what it is) you should not eat meat.
rantwasp··on Bacon may disappear in California as pig rules take effect
I strongly disagree. I would also like you to point me to resources that show you how to build such a diet.

Don’t get me wrong. Eating a mostly-plant based diet is okay and doable but I’m talking the last 5-10% territory.

rantwasp··on Bacon may disappear in California as pig rules take effect
nope. Eating a 100% vegan diet without taking any supplements and without having access to a great nutritionist will make you have a bad time. It’s stupid hard to get all the nutrients you need without meat and you need to be in a privileged position to start with to do this successfully.
rantwasp··on Bacon may disappear in California as pig rules take effect
I does raise an important question. Why do we have predators and why do we even have a food chain?

Is it possible that evolutionary consuming meat gives you an advantage?

rantwasp··on Bacon may disappear in California as pig rules take effect
Oh wow. Let me try forming that argument: 1) meat is nutrient-packed and getting all your nutrients from a plant based diet is stupid hard 2) to be able to be a vegan and healthy you need (today at least) to be in a privileged position (how many poor vegans do you know?) 3) we evolutionarily got here by eating meat - our bodies do better when eating animal fat and protein. The grown and thriving survival of our species is anchored in killing other animals (sounds f’ed up but it is what it is).

rantwasp··on Bacon may disappear in California as pig rules take effect
I got where you’re coming from but meat is one of the most nutrients packed food you can eat. Also, evolutionary people did not become the top of the food chain by eating plants.

Yes, it’s terrible how animals are being treated and yes mass consumption of meat has some terrible side effects.

With that being said: do you think that in the wild a predator will think twice about killing and eating their pray? do you think that every person on Earth could turn vegetarian and be able to get a healthy diet tomorrow?

rantwasp··on Employee shortages: Where have all the workers gone?
you can say it. they just did
rantwasp··on I, Token: The untold story of the hole in Bitcoin's heart
not a lottery. in case of a lottery, when you have the winning numbers you go to a central authority that manages the whole thing and you claim the winnings. Also, in case of a lottery the winnings are a share of what has been put into buying the tickets. also, lotteries can go a long time without having a winner for the jackpot. Also for lotteries, usually there is a tiered winning structure and what you win on is fixed (ie the numbers)

for bitcoin there is no central authority. the reward for winning is “fixed” and claiming the said reward is dependent on a network that validates that you indeed have the work that incorporates pending transactions into the blockchain. also, “winning” happens at regular intervals of time (average 10 minutes based on difficulty), and what you’re winning is somewhat fixed (the block reward is fixed + some TX fees var).

so it’s not a lottery.

rantwasp··on I, Token: The untold story of the hole in Bitcoin's heart
yes. bitcoin is the worst /s

you know what’s the preferred currency for crime? the USD.

If you look at how something, a tool, is used and declare it bad I’m not sure you’re seeing the big picture.

A hammer can be used in construction or to bash someone’s brains out. Nobody ever mentions banning hammers because someone used one in a f’ed up way.

for the environmental damage part: in a free market you cannot really control what people are doing with energy. You use the energy, you pay the bill. End of story. If the profit you’re making from the activity is greater that the money you are putting in people will do that activity.

rantwasp··on I, Token: The untold story of the hole in Bitcoin's heart
you know what else is wasting electricity? the whole financial system. I'm gonna bet you real bitcoin that they waste way more. Also guess what? They close at 5PM and during weekends. So there is that.

The energy consumption and the high prices of GPU comes down to capitalism and freedom of choice. Who are you to decide on what we should spend energy on and what we should not spend energy on? If an activity yields more money that it consumes (even if it's in the form of an electrical bill) people are going to do that activity.

rantwasp··on I, Token: The untold story of the hole in Bitcoin's heart
also, in case of asteroid impact you will lose all your money. what's your point?

why would the miners discard a transaction and not another one given that the value they extract is the same?

rantwasp··on I, Token: The untold story of the hole in Bitcoin's heart
i will bet you real bitcoin that given enough time you'll be able to make all those transactions. there is absolutely no reason for someone to not accept bitcoin when they can literally turn around and convert it in fiat if they don't like holding it immediately.
