ranting-mothon All code is technical debt

Excuse my rule breaking, but holy shit this is crap.

ranting-mothon All code is technical debt

You should write a 15 minute-reading blog post about that. Make sure to do a summary. I think you could use this linked blog post as a template.

ranting-mothon Making my own bed sensor

To each his own is a good rule when it comes to hacking/geek projects.

I've so often been asked "but why are you doing this" or suggested that I go and buy the stuff that I'm making.

I find it very annoying. I find most people who ask so such questions won't "get it" even if I explain.

But I do understand that most often people are trying to be helpful. They can't imagine going through the ordeal that I'm going through for something of no value to them.

ranting-mothon TuneNN: A transformer-based network model for pitch detection

To the dev: the tuner gives me an incredibly high error window with the following message. It doesn't prompt to access the mic (I think that's related). Ubuntu/KDE/Firefox:

ranting-mothon Grindavik [video]

Title needs editing. This is a live stream from a volcanic eruption that just started in Iceland.

https://www.ruv.is/english/2023-12-18-eruption-on-reykjanes-...

At the moment it doesn't look like flight traffic will be affected.

ranting-mothon Wasm3 entering a minimal maintenance phase

This is awful. Slava Ukraini.

ranting-mothon SSH3: SSHv2 using HTTP/3 and QUIC

I'm pretty sure even if CF went rouge you'd be able to keep your SSH connections ad free for a low $1.99/month subscription.

ranting-mothon MongoDB security notice

Their license "is to require that enhancements to MongoDB be released to the community."

I think it only hurts people who want to freeride the project and extend it for selfish personal gains. That's OK by me.

ranting-mothon Pipe Dreams: The life and times of Yahoo Pipes

I have no idea how to use this website, but if anyone wants to read up on pipes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahoo!_Pipes

ranting-mothon OnnxStream: Stable Diffusion XL 1.0 Base on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2

Probably not even 10 years.

ranting-mothon Spin the IKAT Christmas Pyramid with Your Clicks – TU Chemnitz Celebrates

Don't call the go() function in setTimeout(), just pass go as reference.

Because otherwise you'll bomb the recursion stack.

ranting-mothon Spin the IKAT Christmas Pyramid with Your Clicks – TU Chemnitz Celebrates

I think the bearings are wearing out.

ranting-mothon Visualizing fighting game mechanics (2020)

Just do it mentally and keep the game in your mind.

"I summon the Whoore Of Babylon, 70/30 flying. You're finished".

ranting-mothon Spin the IKAT Christmas Pyramid with Your Clicks – TU Chemnitz Celebrates

The server is struggling: Fehler: SQLSTATE[HY000] [1203] User silvester already has more than 'max_user_connections' active connections

ranting-mothon Police have undermined the promise of body cameras

> This rule applies not only to evidence destroyed but also to evidence existing but not produced by the party.

If the police is refusing to release a video to prove their stance, there is absolutely no need to give the police the benefit of the doubt.

ranting-mothon Visualizing fighting game mechanics (2020)

Yep. Even worse when you can pay to get better, like MTG, or Magic The Money Gathering as I'd like to call it.

Once someone in your group starts hunting down those rare (and expensive) cards, everyone else will have to do the same or give up playing.

ranting-mothon Police have undermined the promise of body cameras

Adverse inference should be be applied. Seriously.

ranting-mothon Visualizing fighting game mechanics (2020)

Back in the day me and my buddy spent ages playing Mortal Combat on a PC. I decided to learn all the combos (crazy fast keyboard patterns). The combos gave you disproportional damage wielding power.

I spent hours and hours practicing it when we were playing. My buddy won pretty much every single game, while laughing at my combo attempts.

Then I mastered it one day. I won every single game. Buddy said this combo shit wasn't fair and refused to play the game ever again!

ranting-mothon Show HN: Play Othello in your web browser (made with Mithril)

Nice! If the dev is here, could we have the option of faster animation please.

ranting-mothon Launch HN: Bracket (YC W22) – Two-Way Sync Between Salesforce and Postgres

> The primary source wins any merge conflicts that happen within a sync period.

This is a very fancy way of saying that you just drop conflict and pretend they didn't happen. Syncing databases is very, very tricky. Conflicts are a big part of the trickiness.

ranting-mothon Sneakers Film Promotional Floppy

I vaguely remember a game that deleted data from your hardrive if you triggered the copy protection. The developer got quite a flak!

ranting-mothon Firefox Keeps Getting Faster

I'm on Ubuntu and Firefox. Cold start to page load is seconds.

Try creating a new blank profile in Firefox.

1992. It was relatively safe to run an .exe from a reputable company. Surely a reputable company wouldn't mess with your computer.

2005. I'm playing this music CD in my computer. Sony: hang on, I'm install a rootkit on your computer without your knowledge.

ranting-mothon Conway's Game of Life is omniperiodic

Where does it say it's a surprise?

On the contrary, in summary it says: "The search has finally ended ..."

ranting-mothon Goodbye, clean code (2020)

This is equally as much about not being a besserwisser.

You get a PR to review and you rewrite the code without talking about it? Yes, that's a besserwisser.

ranting-mothon Light can be reflected not only in space but also in time

Careful with the Gigaflib connector. I used it and it blew up tomorrow.

ranting-mothon Microsoft Outlook Blocking All Email from Tutanota.com Domain as Spam

I'd be surprised. I don't think Microsoft has ever abused its power.

ranting-mothon Playstation is erasing seasons of Discovery shows from customer libraries

Gosh, but you wouldn't download a car even if you could, would you?

ranting-mothon The challenges of supporting foreign key constraints

You should definitely put that on your CV because it is incredibly important information.

ranting-mothon Does uBlock Origin bypass the latest YouTube anti-adblock script?

Yes, but YT seems to be doing a lot of A/B testing so what works for others doesn't mean it works for you.

If I see an ad I just close YT for the rest of the day.
