ransom1538··on AirPods live translation blocked for EU users with EU Apple accounts
This is a trade war. This is the EU taxing US corps. Problem is, the US figured it out.
ransom1538··on US High school students' scores fall in reading and math
Lol. Any parent immediately knows. iPhone. Just passive entertainment and sweet sweet dopamine hits. Nothing else for 12 hours a day + both days on the weekend. This also decreases the kids ability to ask questions, go outside, meet people.

The problem is obvious. I don't think people will admit the problem - so this is the new normal.

ransom1538··on AOL to discontinue dial-up internet
Me in 2002: "Wtf is this paper bill mom? You pay for email?" Me in 2007: "Mom. Just... stop"
ransom1538··on Did Craigslist decimate newspapers? Legend meets reality
Shhh.
ransom1538··on AWS deleted my 10-year account and all data without warning
IMHO Lawyers get creative, a github account can show a ton of work activity, nda voilations, etc. Your "private repro" is just a phone call away from being a public repro.
ransom1538··on GCP Outage
It's the entire internet. Check oracle cloud, etc etc. The ENTIRE INTERNET.
ransom1538··on GCP Outage
Why can't companies be honest with being down. It helps us all out so we don't spend an hour internalizing.

We are truly in gods hands.

$ prod

Fetching cluster endpoint and auth data. ERROR: (gcloud.container.clusters.get-credentials) ResponseError: code=503, message=Visibility check was unavailable. Please retry the request and contact support if the problem persists

ransom1538··on GCP Outage
Yeah their status page is all green nothing to see here (but all production systems are down).
ransom1538··on Clojure MCP
This right here. There is a large segment of developers that have not hooked up indexed code, eg: "where I can start asking questions about my code". They treat it like a search engine. What you want is the LLM to INDEX your code. Then you can see the real power of LLMs. Spoiler alert: it is amazing.
ransom1538··on Everyone Is Cheating Their Way Through College
This. LLMs have ended the need for white collar junior work. Recent grads at this point are just a legal/tax (sec 174) liability - a great way to get a law suite. Colleges need to pivot fast.
ransom1538··on docker2exe: Convert a Docker image to an executable
Ah finally. We have finished where we started.
ransom1538··on A senior Apple exec could be jailed in Epic case
"Mr. Roman did not stop there, however. He also testified that up until January 16, 2024, Apple had no idea what fee it would impose on linked-out purchases […] Another lie under oath: contemporaneous business documents reveal that on the contrary, the main components of Apple’s plan, including the 27% commission, were determined in July 2023."

Basically, the current civil court model is 1) go to court with a case 2) demand to read internal memos of the defendants, 3) put people on the stand and walk through everything in these memos.

It is coercion. They want you to settle, or all your personal info goes online.

ransom1538··on Has the decline of knowledge work begun?
I wish that mattered.
ransom1538··on Has the decline of knowledge work begun?
Well, these days you will need a non repetitive physical skill. ER doctor, electrician, comedy tour guide, painter, etc. If your job required you to sit in front of a computer, your job will be the first eliminated. Humans are quite cheap for physical labor compared to a full humanoid drone. Software costs are about to go to zero. Bachelors degrees would turn more into guilds.
ransom1538··on Ask HN: What is interviewing like now with everyone using AI?
I am x10 faster with gpt. No regex, no stackoverflow, no sql, no broiler plate, no text manipulations.
ransom1538··on The impact of competition and DeepSeek on Nvidia
I moved 100% over to deepseek. No switch cost. Zero.
ransom1538··on Nvidia, ASML Plunge as DeepSeek Triggers Tech Stock Selloff
"dig only 1 day instead of an entire month"

You answered your own question. People do not dig in the Sacramento right anymore for gold, because, it is gone. If you can train models for 1/100 the cost, and you sell model training chips, you probably are not going to sell as many chips.

ransom1538··on React 19
I just rsynced my php files over. ci/cd done. php does html/css ui done. I am not sure what all the js trend is about.
ransom1538··on PHP 8.4
The PHP framework slim is x1000 better than Django and is quite popular.

https://www.slimframework.com/

ransom1538··on PHP 8.4
We leave it on staging for about 4 months, scan logs etc. If there is no complaints from qa or devs we roll it out.
ransom1538··on Visual Basic 6 rebuilt in C# – complete with form designer and IDE in browser
Visual basic was the best way to build business apps ever. We just got these features in visual studio. Some we may never get (drag and drop dbs, form builders, etc etc). The closest I have seen was Flash. But if you say Flash or visual basic you are downvoted. I will let people get back to their js frameworks.
ransom1538··on Do AI detectors work? Students face false cheating accusations
IMHO. With calculators introduced, there is zero add in you learning long division. Worse than zero, you could have done something better with your time. ChatGPT is a calculator for all subjects. People have a hard time letting that sink in.
ransom1538··on What Docs-as-Code Means
I prefer when developers and project managers create massive google docs for specs and descriptions. Double points if you share the document with only a handful of favorite employees. Also, ignore all requests to get permission to this document. Eye roll in all meetings if someone hasn't read this document. You can get to god mode if you hide comments around the doc.
ransom1538··on WTF Is a Moat?
"hot take but i think a moat is skill, extreme execution & luck."

Lol. That is the exact opposite of the meaning. Example moats: having cleared FDA two times, getting a great relationship with a taxi board, getting 50% tax breaks from a city in Ohio, etc etc. Moats are x10000 more valuable than "hard work or execution".

ransom1538··on Ask HN: What websites that were sold/abandoned/don't work anymore do you miss?
fuckedcompany.com Layoffs are back. Time to fire it up.
ransom1538··on Show HN: I tracked Facebook image crashes weird
Crash every 3 days, 2 times each time.
ransom1538··on California bans legacy admissions at private universities
Why are you downvoted? California does not have any Ivy League universities.
