ranit··on New iMac with M4
Ha! Loop back to Macintosh colors from 25 years ago.
ranit··on Researchers make a supercapacitor from water, cement, and carbon black
This is the research paper linked in the article.

ranit··on TfL's simple pop-up message led to a significant drop in paper ticket sales
Arguably indeed. Depends what is considered the service in this case. I would argue that the service is “using the public transport “, and it is not “using machine for buying paper tickets”.
ranit··on Stable Diffusion 3 API Now Available
> But still don't like "undisclosed" black box enterprise pricing though when they're running their own API, because it basically means they can tax you to death if you build a service that competes with their API right - so in effect only viable to create small companies with this tech?

"undisclosed" doesn't imply changing the price after it was negotiated with you. It just mean they will negotiate the contracts for large projects, without disclosing the terms to the public ... in my view.

ranit··on Scrum Sucks
> the Scrum proponents will rush in and tell me that we were doing it wrong or that it's not truly Scrum if it's helping more than hurting

Did you worded it like this on purpose, or you wanted to say the opposite? :-)

ranit··on How to boss without being bossy
>> But more seriously: ...

As often happens on HN, a comment worth more than the article. A concise and deep set of rules!

ranit··on Now add a walrus: Prompt engineering in DALL-E 3
I just got it!
ranit··on Now add a walrus: Prompt engineering in DALL-E 3
Where on ChatGPT console can you access DALL-E 3? I am ChatGPT Pro subscriber, but all I can access, additional to GPT-4, are beta features (plugins and Advanced data analysis).
ranit··on Austria rail operator OeBB unveils new night trains
What you said is already factored fully in GP’s comment. :-) sorry.
ranit··on Modular forms, the ‘fifth fundamental operation’ of math
> I would much prefer it to modern non-dense information sparse screens with tons and tons of scrolling.

It doesn't need to go to the opposite extreme (as you described it :-)) to be more readable by default on different screen sizes.

ranit··on Pyobd - a free and open source program for car diagnostics
Wheel attached to the hub is also a safety critical system, isn't it? If not tighten properly it may lead to a fatal accident. Where should the industry put the line of serviceable vs non-serviceable (by non-professional) parts?
ranit··on Canadian judge rules thumbs-up emoji can represent contract agreement
Thank you.
ranit··on Ask HN: Lots of AWS credits expiring soon, ideas?
This “solution” defeats the very intend of GP proposal to not use it :-)
ranit··on DeviceScript: TypeScript for Tiny IoT Devices
And remains a dream far away from reality.
ranit··on Even if you can't write assembly, you can read disassembly
Nice and useful post BTW. Most programmers seem oblivious about what takes place "under the hood".

A side note: I still plan to read your Geometry for Programmers, now that it is close to being finished. All the best!

ranit··on Even if you can't write assembly, you can read disassembly
It cannot be toggled back to hide the explanation without refreshing the whole page.
ranit··on Nalanda University flourished for more than seven centuries
It is amazing it taught 10,000 students at once, but having 10 million books … at times when only handwritten books existed?!? Currently Indian National Library has 2.2 million books and British library has > 13 million. Something is misquoted I guess.
ranit··on Deutschlandticket for regional bus and rail services to be offered for €49/month
I just realized (from this site) how minimal railway system is in Greece and South Italy.
ranit··on Show HN: Doc Converter – Convert PDF docs to Word documents on your computer
From the linked MS support document:

ranit··on Show HN: Doc Converter – Convert PDF docs to Word documents on your computer
The opposite is included: doc to pdf.
ranit··on Appalachian Apple hunter who rescued 1k ‘lost’ varieties (2021)
> Swiss Orange“. Which is so ironic because there was no access to Switzerland nor good Oranges.

Perhaps this is what made it desirable.

ranit··on Always look down in London: Pavement oddities
> Vehicles drive on the left hand side in the UK. Except at the entrance to the Savoy, where road markings make it clear they must drive on the right.

Similarly on Palatino bridge (Ponte Palatino) in Rome, vehicles drive on the left side.

ranit··on Solar panels open crop lands to farming energy
Thanks for the link, good to learn more. Perhaps you are right. Mine was a genuine, layman question.
ranit··on Solar panels open crop lands to farming energy
> Even precision fermentation is an easier to implement fix for land use, which looks increasingly like it can reduce our need for land to grow grains. See Solar Foods for example

What do you refer as "precision fermentation" here? The linked Wikipedia article is about "growing microbial biomass that can be used as edible protein". Just curious, perhaps I missed the connection.

ranit··on Schedule cronjob for the first Monday of every month, the funky way
This is so easy, just interpret a few hundred words :)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Date_of_Easter

… and you would still be wrong, depending in which country it gets calculated.

ranit··on LaMDA is not sentient
I'm not talking about games. Imagine this technology being used by an autocratic state.
ranit··on LaMDA is not sentient
> Perhaps it is time to claim fait accompli with regard to the Turing test and now train models to re-assure us, when asked, that they are just a sophisticated chatbot.

Good luck convincing bad actors to follow this rule.

ranit··on Mechanical Watch
> but it does so in the same way as writing your programs directly in assembly

> contains lots of magic numbers and very imperative code

Well, we really don't know if the code was written in this form by hand, don't we.

It could have been compiled into this, to use your words, "assembly with magic numbers and imperative" from much more elegant form. We may see this form only because this is what browsers understand.

I am not saying it was compiled, just speculating that seeing pure WebGL does not mean it was pure WebGL to begin with.
