Email: this nick on Gmail

I submitted a post on the tiny, cheap and dangerous fake iPhone charger, which got 140 points (I'm not the author). This account is now hellbanned.

ranit8··on Opera Confirms WebKit Prefix Usage
Why don't browsers accept prefix-less properties and render them as if they were prefixed, until those properties make it to a standard?

EDIT: someone in this topic linked to prefixfree, which is what I asked for, except it's not browser-native.

ranit8··on A program to compute the nth Fibonacci number
> Calculating sqrt(5) to the needed precision...

I think this one could be optimized by precomputing and storing (1 + sqrt(5)) at the highest precision available.

ranit8··on GMail: designer arrogance and the cult of minimalism
It works! I love you.
ranit8··on IPv6 is no longer considered optional
I think it's the opposite: NAT almost made IPv6 obsolete. I spent a large time trapped behind a NAT by my former ISP, getting "you are alredy downloading" errors. So I absolutely hate whoever invented that crap.
ranit8··on Firefox 12 released
Chrome and Flash are installing services, but they also create tasks in Task Scheduler. Will Firefox do this as well? Can one delete the services and have only the tasks running?
ranit8··on SkyDrive is a threat to Dropbox
It was read-only when I tried that, every file writing would fail.
ranit8··on Alan Kay on Programming and Scaling [presentation]
HN should move the search box to the top of the page.

ranit8··on Learning VIM while playing a game
Then software companies might add intrinsic value by selling storage media containing the programs, instead of just the programs.
ranit8··on Topics deleted from StackOverflow
Nice, it's much better looking than the one I posted.

I wonder if I should have posted a Google cache link instead of the original, to prevent exceeding their quota.

ranit8··on Announcing the Windows 8 Editions
http://helgeklein.com/setacl-studio/ (seems to do that; haven't used it, though)
ranit8··on Gamifying Algebra
Can you still edit the post title? It's missing an important question mark.
ranit8··on Google BBS Terminal – What Google would have looked like in the 80s
Think what would happen if the number is wrong and other side of the line has a phone, instead of a faxmodem. A human attends the call.

Or am I wrong and that is the noise you are sending to them? Now I'm curious.

ranit8··on Email is not broken: It’s a framework, not an application
Spam is a human problem more than a technical one. We need deanonymization to name and shame the spammers.
ranit8··on Don't tell me how to enable JavaScript
Lifehacker is a terrible offender. Any of their pages contains the source code of the relevant content enclosed in a javascript object. I could just eval() the contents of the right <script> tag, append the created object to the DOM and get a readable page.
ranit8··on Mozilla may make Flash click-to-play by default in future Firefox
Did anybody notice that this feature is already available (off by default) in Firefox 11 stable?

I hope they don't turn it on, or advertisers will move away from Flash to Canvas.

ranit8··on Google announces 50 search changes implemented in March
Noscript has a surrogate that solves this; it works even if scripts are enabled on google search page.
ranit8··on Lisp in the Cloud - The Next Lisp Machine Will Be Everywhere
x86 is aimed at Pascal and other stack-based languages.

The processor had some new instructions (not present in the 8080 and 8085) to better support stack based high level programming languages such as Pascal and PL/M; some of the more useful ones were push mem-op, and ret size, supporting the "pascal calling convention" directly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_8086

ranit8··on Ask HN: Please be more thoughtful when downvoting
There is a flag option, it shows only when you are replying. I don't know its moral purpose, but I guess you are supposed to post whenever you flag a comment.

Edit: TIL I should use the link link instead of the reply link, so I can see new answers before posting mine.

ranit8··on Google Maps for NES (video)
The correct link is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rznYifPHxDg
ranit8··on Coding Horror: The End of Pagination
Almost 2 months ago HN started doing this at short time spans (high traffic?), and coming back to default behavior. (I commented here http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3627285 ) This becoming definitive is not a good thing.
ranit8··on Ask HN: Should you downvote based on disagreement alone?
A flag link becomes available while you are writing a reply post.
ranit8··on "I Won The Windows Phone Challenge, But Lost 'Just Because'"
I use noscript and I get this horrible url, but it shows the correct tweet (i'm not logged in). Yet it's much better reading the posted tldr.

ranit8··on Paul Graham, it’s time to put your money where your mouth is
His page at Microsoft Research is gone, and Google Cache has got it the same day you posted this. I wonder what happened to him. Can anybody link to that research?

ranit8··on The Benefits of Bilingualism

ranit8··on Scientists Claim Brain Memory Code Cracked - 6 bit bytes
I guess loss of flagging rights might be due to flagging highly upvoted articles. Maybe searching for less popular articles from these spammy sources, and flagging those, would be a viable strategy.
ranit8··on Ask HN: Is there any point in using mailto: links any more?
> Might also write a Firefox extension that enables using gmail for mailto: links when I get some time.

I see the option to register mailto: protocol with Gmail and Yahoo mail in my Firefox profile. Is it there from the beginning or it only appears after visiting them?

ranit8··on Mari0=Mario + Portal ..Open source game
The former submission with links to other Portal mashups: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2939097

Not played Mari0 yet, but I loved Not Tetris from the same authors.
