ranie93··on Anthropic appears to be A/B testing reduced effort levels in Claude Code
I don’t know if this is still the case but while using Copilot if you looked through the chain-of-thought output you would see it reasoning about a “budget”. i.e. “since I’m close to the session budget I should…”. So it could be possible

ranie93··on Artemis II crew take “spectacular” image of Earth
Maybe it’s because I (like many) have experienced taking pictures at night and seeing the grainy result that _this_ image struck me as incredibly realistic.

Almost like I ran the grainy-to-real conversion in my mind and I felt like I was imagining seeing this in person. Beautiful image!

ranie93··on How sea turtles learn locations using Earth’s magnetic field: research
According to wikipedia the reversals can take a while

>Some sources estimate the most recent four reversals took on average 7,000 years to occur. Clement (2004) suggests that this duration is dependent on latitude, with shorter durations at low latitudes and longer durations at mid and high latitudes. Others estimate the duration of full reversals to vary from between 2,000 to 12,000 years.

So maybe that's enough time for the biomass to adapt?

ranie93··on Inkjet printer with DRM-free ink will be launched via a crowdfunding campaign
Seems like it has a cutter:

>There's an integrated cutter that'll cut the roll into A4 size, but if you have a longer format printing job like a banner, then that's possible too.

ranie93··on Kaleidos – A portable nuclear microreactor that replaces diesel generators
Could this be associated to a supposed recent State Department approval?

“I just approved a program to deploy small modular nuclear reactors built in the United States to an allied country to help with their sort of energy infrastructure.”

“Which allied country would that be?”

“I can't tell you. It's not public yet.”

ranie93··on The Mythical Machine-Month Paradox – How much could AI change programming?
slightly off-topic (but tangentially mentioned in the article). I google'd "Chicxulub" and saw an easter-egg I hadn't previously known about :)

Great article. I recently finished my second reading of TMM and how/to what extent our current era of generative code affects the ideas of the book was top of mind.

ranie93··on When Figma starts designing us
Tangential: I have similar thoughts about Jira. The ticket-fication of organizational goals. At least it would be useful to pen any negative repercussions of this

Can "everything" be mapped to a written language task (i.e. described)?
ranie93··on Complain and Propose (2014)
I wonder how the author would respond to your feedback:

> Reporting problems and proposed solutions should be encouraged, but there shouldn't be a blanket statement of "Don't bring a me problem unless you have a proposed solution!"

It's kind of meta because in this post itself you are employing a kind of complain-and-propose.

Anyways I think your conclusion is entirely reasonable. I don't think blanket statements are most ever the solution, and I assume the author would agree!

ranie93··on History of the Paper Clip (2016)
>Vaaler Paper Clip >Patented 1900 (Germany), 1901 (US)

>Vaaler, who was Norwegian, is commonly but incorrectly given credit for invention of the paper clip. His designs were neither first nor important. There is a large Gem paper clip statue in Norway. Norway might consider giving it to the U.S.

I wonder if some kind of jammer is running in that area. Reminds me of a similar story: https://www.theverge.com/2014/5/1/5672762/man-faces-48000-fi...

Weird that even a wired connection does not work. Stay curious!

ranie93··on Toward AGI – What Is Missing?
If a time traveler from a future where AGI was discovered brought back the information (program?, algorithm(s)?) necessary to create AGI:

1. How much space would it take up? GBs?

2. Would we have the computing power to run "it", say on a top of the line consumer laptop?

ranie93··on Economists Are Rethinking the Numbers on Inequality
They're not, but its fine to read between the lines. The letter makes no allusions to seizing wealth or stating that immense wealth hasn't been created.

ranie93··on Economists Are Rethinking the Numbers on Inequality
Without checking the figures, I can agree with the idea that a one-time seizement wouldn't assuage much.

Certainly Bill Gates and his endeavors have created immense value for many.

None of these points are being contested or purported in the "line of thinking" you mention (the letter I linked I assume?)
