rangerelf··on Half a century of SQL
> SQL is not modular, most features are highly context-dependent...

Examples?

> SQL might be OK for trivial things, as in OLTP...

What is the threshold for triviality? I've seen understandable fairly complex queries, but they're not mind-twisters by any means; if you know what you need, and understand your data, >>and are not a layperson regarding databases<< it's doable without much sweat.

> But anything even slightly more advanced is ... not nice

Again, what is the threshold, or at least what is your threshold, for triviality vs. non-trivial?

You say it's "unique in its uselessness" but "the underlying relational algebra model is brilliant", can you explain a bit further what you mean by that?

Depending on how important this is for you, I'd get an attorney involved and ask the faculty members who are accusing you "HOW are you facilitating academic dishonesty".

It's really easy to accuse someone of something, it's much harder to substantiate it, especially when it's factually not true.

I know attorney's aren't free (nor cheap), that's why I asked how important this is for you, and if it's worth putting your [current] academic pursuits in jeopardy.

Best of luck.

rangerelf··on Instead of “auth”, we should say “permissions” and “login”
In an activity where words have specific meanings and should be used in their correct place in order to prevent miscommunication of intent or purpose, "stretching the meaning" of a particular technical term can only bring confusion (and bugs).

Authentication and Authorization are correct and complete terms that have separate but related meanings, personally I don't feel them to be confusing at all.

The entire article feels like whining because the author stubbed his toe against a corner.

Lay people need explaining these concepts using non technical words? Of course, that's what documentation and manuals are for. "WE" are not lay people, and we should understand what their meanings are.

rangerelf··on OpenAI didn’t copy Scarlett Johansson’s voice for ChatGPT, records show
Is it necessarily a bad bias to assume OpenAI is still behaving as it's been behaving during its entire history: recklessly taking other people's IP?
rangerelf··on Walls are starting to close in for Tesla, let's have a closer look
Yes, not all customers buy into the original [external] design.

Personally I think it's a low-rent imitation of Mazda, so a refresh would have been nice.

For all the "but the insides have been upgraded/revamped!!" messaging, it's just confirming that they're too cheap to improve, or just change, the outside.

rangerelf··on Statement from Scarlett Johansson on the OpenAI "Sky" voice
Did they really hire another voice actress? Who?

As for why it's bad, it's because they set down the precedent of wanting specifically Scarlett Johansen's voice, got declined, doubled down, got declined again, and then went ahead and did it anyway. They can say in their own defense that it's some other voice actress that sounds similar, ok, so produce that name, tell us who she is.

Absent that, it's Johansen's voice, clipped from movies and interviews and shows and whatever.

rangerelf··on Statement from Scarlett Johansson on the OpenAI "Sky" voice
I'd say it's a given, every detail in a movie is an artistic expression of some kind.

It doesn't matter what the probabilities are when the stakes are high:

- 1% chance of living the rest of your life in mind numbing pain

- 50% chance of having to remove that pesky wisdom tooth

(numbers pulled out of thin air)

In the first case, I'd really really think about it hard and deep, and question myself if it's really that necessary; in the second, meh, worst case I lose a wisdom tooth.

Of course you can detect the difference between a blade and a burr grinder: how much sludge is at the bottom of your cup?

That said, is it really meaningless if it gives you personal satisfaction and peace? Is it any different than any other routine or ritual, like going to church on Sunday?

There's nothing _wrong_ with it, it performs according to spec, but it has limitations: trace length, power requirements, signal limitations, heat, etc.

Olive Garden is garbage, why would I want to put my hands on it?

Only Olive Garden and Chipotle have managed to give me a stomach ache.

rangerelf··on The fishy death of Red Lobster
"Gives the primary business (making food profitably) a huge cash infusion, and removes a distraction"

This is so suspiciously MBA-esque: - Owning real estate (and responsibilities associated with it) are not distractions: they are the cost (and responsibilities) associated with running a business. - "a huge cash infusion" followed by [correspondingly] huge rent payments; the business becomes a prisoner.

There certainly are distractions when running a business, but owning the spot of land where it's installed is not one of them.

rangerelf··on Run0, a systemd based alternative to sudo, announced
And what would be the equivalent to, "Oh, I don´t know the name of the log for this process I can see in 'ps aux', let me cd into /var/log and see what filenames I can find ... or grep everything until I can find a couple of words that make some sense so I can keep digging further"?

The lack of explorability in journalctl, the "need" to keep everything locked behind their own flavor of tools and magic file types, is what makes the rest of us abhor them.

Not all wine and cheese is imported. + lack of imported wine or cheese should --eventually-- boost the appearance of local alternatives + lack of foreign video games? I don't think it's a cornerstone of the economy the way foodstuffs are. Will a local-grown alternative appear? Maybe; that depends on the local priorities and capabilities.

Definitely biased. I had no idea what KYC means. I don't think typing it out fully once at the beginning is too much to ask, is it?

Of COURSE they wouldn't!

If google fiber hadn't happened, all providers would have continued sitting on their collective asses, soaking as much money as possible, doing the least possible legally permissible work, nickle-and-diming customers as much as possible.
