Probably die early from lung or bladder cancer but you won't get alzheimer's!
randycupertino··on Alzheimer's disease mortality among taxi and ambulance drivers (2024)
Ambulance drivers, truckers, delivery drivers and taxi drivers are more likely to get bladder cancer, most likely from holding in urine but also probably from diesel fumes and pathogens from road dust particulate matter.

My shitty ambo company sold our sleeping quarters as revenge when we tried to unionize and so we would have to sleep in the rig and would run the engine to keep warm, I am sure I will meet an early death from sucking in all those diesel fumes over night shifts.

randycupertino··on Private equity turned vulnerable elderly people into human ATMs
100% agree- the Jewish home for the aged is the nicest facility I ever saw in my career as a medic. I asked some of the nurses I worked with about why they were on such a different level - better than even the fanciest most expensive $30k a month places in Portola Valley or Palo Alto - and was told it's because taking care of the elderly is a fundamental tenet of Judaism.
randycupertino··on Private equity turned vulnerable elderly people into human ATMs
Also a former medic, the best care homes I ever went to were the Jewish Home for the Aged. They were so much nicer and the patients there never had decubitus ulcers or staph infection in skin folds from not being cleaned.

The worst place I ever saw was Atherton Long Care which supposedly is fancy and expensive but they had neglected an old lady so poorly I actually reported them to CDPH and the ombudsman. She had full on necrotized tissue under both her breasts and a rotted unchanged g-tube that you could smell all the way down the hallway to the nursing station it was so sad. John George Psych hospital and Cordilleras MHRC are both also very sad hellholes. Patients sleeping laying on the floor in the hallways with a blanket because the rooms are full etc. We had a lady who purposely stabbed herself in the eye so she could go to the ER to get out of Cordilleras because it was so awful.

What I found if you ever need to place your loved on in a care home is the sniff test is the best assessment of how well it's run and if the patients are cared for. If patients are cleaned regularly and not left to sit in their own diapers it really shows there is enough staff ratio and attention given to the patients. Go on a random evening or day and at different times. Food quality is also a good indicator - eat lunch with your parents there. Would you eat this yourself voluntarily? If yes, it's probably a good place not run on a shoestring budget.

Also - hn readers - if your mom is in a care home please always check under her breasts to ensure she is clean and dry there every time you visit. Far far too many old ladies get candida and bacterial infections under their breasts that are never cleaned or taken care of because it's embarrassing to check or clean and dry so then it just gets wet and rots and is painful, sad and gross and can lead to even worse things like cellulitis or an abscess.

> The connection is believed to be the spatial reasoning involved in routing.

This is triggering me lol. I was a Paramedic for 10 years and 3 of those years were before GPS existed and we had these awful 900 page 5" thick things we had to wield on the fly called Map Books. It was part of our probation period testing and they would time us to pick out the routes reliably within a certain deadline or not graduate from being a probie.

While your partner drove to the call you'd put the book on your lap and flip to the big large grid which would tell you which map your location would be on (page 770), then you'd look up the street in the back appendix to get the coordinates for the specific house (P5, C2) and then find the cross street on another page (P5, C3), go to the grid and find the closest appropriate hospital for the purpose of the call (different ERs have different functions- for gunshots go to Highland, for amputations go to CalPac Davies, for heart attacks go to UCSF, etc) (page 815), the street location for that (A6, C4) and then make your route while flipping back and forth between all the pages while simultaneously telling your partner where to turn as you go.

When I went to a better ran company, dispatch would give us map page and grid coordinates over the radio when we got the call.

Within a few months you learn most of the neighborhoods and routes, and road hazards and preferences- for example if going to UCSF from the Peninsula take O'Shaughnessy because there's no traffic and is a smooth ride. And if you're going to Seton Hospital from 101 slow down around the turn on the on ramp onto 280 because there is a GIANT bump that will knock your partner in the back's head into the ceiling and not be comfortable for the patient on the gurney.

Map books were no fun but some of the dudes I worked with definitely became route-finding savants.

My friend's idiot loser husband got addicted to sports betting and day trading and lost their life savings and even spent kids college funds. She found out because he had started to apply for a home equity loan to catch up on some of his debts and they called her to verify some paperwork.

The only reason I found out was because she had a HUGE obnoxious gorgeous flower arrangement delivered to her at work and I asked her what they were for and she started crying and then told me they were his apology flowers - that he put on her credit card!

She doesn't want to divorce because their kids but I'm encouraging her to think about protecting herself and I sent her some attorney recommendation links. He's never had a decent job it's majority her income so divorcing isn't even that favorable for her now afaik. Sad situation.

randycupertino··on Woman who never stopped updating her lost dog's chip reunites with him after 11y
It may vary by company but a lot of the time the chip company acts as a neutral intermediary. For example we adopted a homeless cat, and the vet found a chip on her, gave us the chip company info. The chip company wouldn't give us the owner's information but contacted them on our behalf and said we'd found her. They replied to the chip company who told us they moved away and we could have her. We love her so much!

I just wish for once one of these egomaniacal billionaires would actually put all their efforts and resources into solving climate change or ending world hunger.

Even his medical initiative Chan-Zuckerberg biohub is a self-congratulatory shell game. I worked in the same building as them for years, literally all they did was have parties, conferences, networking events and self-congratulatory schmooze things and never prioritized actual lab research or clinical advancements.

randycupertino··on Regular army and reserve components enlistment program: Summary of change
I guess I expected him to be calling all those generals and admirals with decades of combat, command and special forces experience together for something more substantive like policy changes vs an unhinged coked up rant boiling down to "no fatties!"

He's also rebranding to a macho aesthetic, encouraging bringing back hazing, tossing bunks, "shark attacks" and drill sergeants putting hands on recruits. I'm no expert but maybe if we're having trouble recruiting we shouldn't lead with ways to make military life suck even more?

randycupertino··on Regular army and reserve components enlistment program: Summary of change
Lucky for us Pete Hegseth declared war on "fat generals and admirals" and is going to end fat troops and increase fitness standards! /s

https://thehill.com/policy/defense/5528556-hegseth-warrior-e...

> “Frankly, it’s tiring to look out at combat formations, or really any formation, and see fat troops,” he said. “Likewise, it’s completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon leading commands around the country and the world.”

“It’s a bad look. It is bad, and it’s not who we are,” he continued.

> “I don’t want my son serving alongside troops who are out of shape, or in a combat unit with females who can’t meet the same combat arms physical standards as men” Hegseth said.

randycupertino··on Jury finds Meta liable in case over child sexual exploitation on its platforms
This is one of the first times the court found the platform itself can be liable, overruling frequent industry claims that they just host content and are never responsible for the content. $375 million sounds big but is peanuts compared to their annual revenue. And of course Meta will appeal and then try to drag everything out for years and years. Expect copycat lawsuits.

These platforms expose minors to predators and bad actors, and Meta was proven lying about safety.

randycupertino··on Russian women who don't want children will be sent to psychologist
> Russia faces a deepening demographic crisis that has been exacerbated by the war in Ukraine.

> Under the updated guidelines for reproductive health checks, doctors in Russia will ask women how many children they plan to have. If a woman replies that she does not intend to give birth, “it is recommended to send the patient to a consultation with a medical psychologist with the goal of forming a positive attitude towards having children”. The recommendation does not apply to men who have no desire to have children.

> In 2024 there were 600,000 more deaths than births in Russia and birth rates fell to their lowest since President Putin came to power in 2000, according to Rosstat, the state statistics service. The current population is 146 million, according to official figures that some analysts suspect have been inflated. Forecasts suggest the country’s population could fall to 90 million or less by the end of the century.

randycupertino··on German Star Christian Ulmen Accused of Revenge Porn Against Ex-Wife
The perpetrator was her husband for ten years while being married to her he was contacting strangers as well as colleagues in her name and sent them explicit messages and fake porn of her.

He confessed after she went to the police.

Her instagram post about it is pretty powerful. He sounds like a psycho creep.

"For years, fake profiles were created under my name, closely networked within my professional circle, primarily contacting men. After initially normal conversation, it became more flirtatious; the person sent (fake) nude photos and sex videos of me, designed to appear private and as if I had photographed myself nude and secretly filmed myself having sex.

This usually transitioned into an email conversation (for which email addresses using my name were created). The person spoke to the men on the phone (using a computer-generated voice of me) eventually, it progressed to phone sex. Sex dates were arranged and then canceled at short notice. Sexual affair was promised.

The whole game went on for over 10 YEARS (!). During this time, 'I' sent nude photos and sex videos of myself to hundreds of men. 'My' spread naked crotch, 'my' naked body. People in the industry believed that I was actually behind it. I was in an intense online affair with 30 men, some for years. The profile sent the men an "EROTIC STORY" in which 'I' was 'RAPED' by 21 men in which it is repeatedly described how much I CRY, that I am AFRAID, that I am in PAIN, that I keep saying that I DON'T WANT this. The story ends with me after the group rape still motionless and covered in semen lying on the floor for a while. 'Tears streamed from Collien’s coffee-brown eyes.' it said.

I only became aware of all this a few years ago, through a lunch with a producer who in passing brought up 'our private conversations'. In 2023, I went public with the issue, wanting it to finally stop. Nevertheless, the perpetrator continued. Even while I was filming a documentary on the subject in 2024, the perpetrator continued the game until the accounts were banned by the platforms. We called the first part "The Hunt for the Perpetrators," for which I traveled extensively.

But that wouldn't have been necessary at all, because the perpetrator was (as I now know) quite close all along. His name: Christian Ulmen.

Only because of my complaint against UNKNOWN did he confess (so that I would stop the investigation). He told me he acted this way out of kind of a POSSESSION MINDSET. Because he owns me (I am, after all, his wife), he can make me AVAILABLE to other men FOR SEX. The DEGRADATION gave him pleasure! It TURNED him ON to HUMILIATE me for years!

Sexualized violence is not a discourse floating above reality. It is bitter and harsh reality happening among us every day, even in our own safe spaces! In our homes, where we thought we were safe... Enough is enough!"

> Walmart is developing algorithmic tools to shape how it sets prices, even as US lawmakers intensify scrutiny of data-driven pricing in grocery and retail. The retailer has secured two US patents this year covering automated markdowns and machine learning-based demand forecasting, adding to a broader portfolio of nearly 50 US patents granted to the company so far in 2026.

> Walmart says the new systems are not designed for surge or individualized pricing, but their capabilities arrive at a moment when lawmakers are moving to restrict precisely those practices.

> One of the patents, issued in January, describes what Walmart calls an "end-to-end price markdown system" for its e-commerce platforms, including Walmart.com. According to the filing, the system would dynamically and automatically update item prices to implement markdowns based on data such as predicted demand and consumers' price sensitivity.

The one that's gotten me recently is AI-generated fake movie trailers for upcoming movies where the real trailer hasn't been released yet. It's so annoying. It feels real, says it is the real trailer, looks legit, has the actual cast, then the content is just ... off. Turns out it is fake. Argh.
