randycupertino··on San Francisco: Don't Fall for Industry Defense of Surveillance Pricing
> You really see this in spades with Uber/Lyft though. I've often compared Uber prices with friends of mine and there can be a big difference for the same trip at the same time with two different people.

This even happens with your own Uber accounts- when I'm logged into my work Uber account the prices are always $5-$25 more expensive but if I toggle to my personal Uber account they drop immediately for the same ride. I asked our work accounting team (with screenshots!) if I could just use the cheaper ride via my personal account and expense it to save the company money and they said no lol.

Their bagged salads are so convenient. It's literally the only thing that got me eating salads again, easy to dump them out and whip it up for a fast healthy wfh lunch. There aren't really other brands at least at my grocery stores. Maybe there will be alternatives now with all of this fallout.

OB/Gyns already have an intense malpractice climate... this is not going to bode well for future MDs going into the specialty.

This verdict sucks... the resident saved the baby's life after it was stuck in the birth canal. Brachial plexus injury and fracturing the clavicle are complications of shoulder dystocia. The only other option was the baby would have died in the birth canal. Idiotic jury.

randycupertino··on Four takeaways from our investigation into a hidden gene-editing death
> They infused into her spinal fluid trillions of viruses that carried instructions to assemble a so-called base editor customized to fix the faulty gene in her brain cells. Her condition was not likely to be fatal, but it could bring lifelong disability and serious medical issues. So her parents turned to an academic team, who developed the base editor and showed them evidence that it worked in the brains of mice and monkeys. The parents were told the risks were modest and decided treating their daughter was worth the gamble.

> The trial went tragically wrong, however, according to a Science and Retraction Watch investigation written by Brendan Borell. The child, whose parents asked that she be called Mei (Chinese for “beautiful”), developed a fever and then signs of kidney damage. She died within a week after being treated.

> The most likely reason, a hospital report would conclude, was an immune reaction to the viruses used to deliver the base editor. Mei’s death last year was never made public, and her parents—who paid for the development of the treatment themselves—now want accountability. “We did not realize how unusual and dangerous many of the arrangements were,” they say.

randycupertino··on 'The Odyssey' Proves It: Audiences Want Movies Made the Hard Way
In addition to CG fatigue I think users are having remake fatigue. Audiences don't want to see a Moana remake, another Marvel movie or another Superman spin-off. Star Wars and Marvel are getting so overexposed people aren't bothering to show up for them to theaters.
randycupertino··on United Flight Attendants Built a Black Market Selling the Best Trips
> Within the flight attendant community, this kind of trade has long had crude slang attached to it — including a version with “FCO” as shorthand for Rome — because the alleged exchanges are not always just cash or gifts.

Wonder what the slang is.

> Hathaway, quipped, “Thou shalt not wear Uggs.”

Damon, who plays Odysseus, the legendary Greek king of Ithaca, explained Nolan’s disdain for Uggs, claiming the shoes represent a level of leisure the director dislikes. He then revealed that the director also does not allow actors to watch playback or sit on chairs.

Reminds me of when I would get clowned for getting Diet Coke at McDonalds or Taco Bell. "You're eating fast food, why even bother with a DIET coke, har har har..."

I just like the taste better. :-/ but so many people have thought that was soooo funny.

randycupertino··on Pete Hegseth, DoD announce mandatory annual testosterone testing for members 30
Interesting timing considering the recent AUA study that 55% of people treated with testosterone are done so inappropriately. https://www.endocrine.org/news-and-advocacy/news-room/2026/p...

Also will bring on a ton of sketchy testosterone supplements to "optimize" the troops.

Hegseth is obsessed with masculinity and not appearing beta yet he also hates beards! https://www.cbsnews.com/news/pentagon-grooming-standards-for...

This new testing requirement feels like a thinly veiled attempt to weed out trans people.

randycupertino··on Sperm donors need limits, says a European fertility group
The prolific sperm donors who have fathered hundreds and some cases thousands of children seem to have unhealthy compulsions/obsessions- often if they are banned at certain clinics or donating in specific countries they go elsewhere and continue to donate under new identities.

I wonder what their motivation is - ego? Fixation on legacy? Sexual kink?

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/netflixs-man-1000-kids-pu...

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-65429936

> A Dutch man suspected of fathering more than 550 children worldwide through sperm donations has been ordered to stop. The man named Jonathan, aged 41, could be fined more than €100,000 (£88,000) if he tries to donate again. He was banned from donating to fertility clinics in the Netherlands in 2017 after it emerged he had fathered more than 100 children. But instead of stopping he carried on donating sperm abroad and online. A court in The Hague has told him to provide a list of all the clinics he had used and to order them to destroy his sperm. The man was said to have misled hundreds of women.

Computer scientist and law and economics researcher Ben Edelman's deep dive into Bill Gate's daughers' Phoebe's $185 million valuation online shopping assistant startup Phia.

Phia has been very buzzy in pop culture, having raised $35 million Series A from celebrity investors including Sidney Sweeney, Ice Spice, Halsey, the Chainsmokers, Khloe Kardashian, Jessica Alba, Alix Earle, Shaboozey, Jessica Alba, Paris Hilton, Mindy Kaling, Wendi Murdoch, Karlie Kloss, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, etc.

Sounds very similar to the affiliate link hijacking and cookie stuffing scam Honey got in trouble for a few years ago. Essentially using the extension to steal clicks and commissions.

randycupertino··on United Airlines Loses Bid to Dismiss Lawsuit over 'Windowless' Window Seats
Feels like it wouldn't be that hard to program in a note to people booking that seat, "no window" so they are advised while booking.

Personally I hate that seat because you don't get the extra room from the carve out area for the window, it's filled in by wall.

randycupertino··on Footage Shows Cop Stalking Woman After Surveilling Her with a LPR
HIPAA is pretty strict and hospitals will flag and fire you if you access unauthorized patients, the police should be subject to the same restrictions for accessing civilian info without cause. They would never police themselves, though.
randycupertino··on Footage Shows Cop Stalking Woman After Surveilling Her with a LPR
He was mad she didn't follow him back on instagram!

> “When Deputy Roman approached she stated, ‘I knew it was you’ and asked, ‘does all my information pop up on your screen?’ and further inquired, ‘How did you know it was me?’ She stated Deputy Roman responded, ‘I told you I'd find you and pull you over.’ She stated Deputy Roman also stated, ‘And I was hoping your boyfriend was in the car so I can pull him out and give him a hard time.’ She stated she responded that she did not think that was a good idea,” the police report reads.

> She said that Roman asked her why she didn’t follow him back on Instagram, that she needed to leave, and said she would follow him back on Instagram but didn’t want to text and drive. She told investigators that she “said this to get Deputy Roman to leave her alone.” She “advised Deputy Roman she was late to getting where she was going and repeatedly asked if she could leave. [She] stated Deputy Roman eventually told her she could leave.”

randycupertino··on California bans 'sell by' labels, hoping to cut food waste
> Do all these laws improve peoples lives?

The salary requirement for job postings has been AWESOME. Saves so much time and you can see if your company is paying market rates, realize if you are underpaid etc. Definitely made my life better. Other states are following suit! Employers hate it, haha. California, Colorado, NY, Illinois, Washington, Maryland, Minnesota and Hawaii all have this law now.

randycupertino··on Costco is the anti-Amazon

randycupertino··on Costco is the anti-Amazon
I think online ordering is more wasteful because people order the wrong thing and don't know what sizes fit so they often buy multiple sizes and return or toss the ones that don't fit. This article where they buy a pallet crate of returned amazon clothing is pretty crazy- it was all polyester crap!

https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/mystery-amazon-pa...

I saw commentary from a garment designer that there is enough clothing currently unused on earth to clothe the entire next six generations even if we completely stopped all production now.

At least in person people can try the stuff on and ensure it fits.

randycupertino··on Zuckerberg says AI agent development going slower than expected
According to the recent book about Meta leadership, Careless People, it's that employees are afraid to tell him no, so he's ensconced by yes-men who tell him whatever he wants to hear. He probably has no grasp of market and product development realities.

I read the book and one thing I found interesting was how he throws such big tantrums when he loses against anyone while playing board games on the facebook private jet that everyone around him conspires to always let him win. Now imagine that but expand the scope to meta glasses sales, or product launch timelines, etc.

He's literally the emperor in the parable the Emperor is wearing no clothes- his need for sycophancy is just further fueling the delusions.

randycupertino··on I used Claude Code to get a second opinion on my MRI
Interesting. There recently was an article about how premenopausal and menopausal women are taking antihistamines with pepcid to help them sleep due to it going viral on tiktok.

https://www.thecut.com/article/antihistamines-pepcid-ac-peri...

> Then, a few months ago, Angela saw a social-media post from a woman who took daily anti-histamines (like Allegra, Claritin, or Zyrtec) plus Pepcid AC (a common antacid) for her perimenopause symptoms. Her results, as reported, sounded miraculous: no more brain fog, no more tossing and turning all night. Even her mood vastly improved.

randycupertino··on What Ozempic does to the gut-brain axis
I definitely used to use food as a source of joy, so I had try to and find things to replace that. I got really into getting my nails done, nail art and perfume/fragrances to help fill the joy gap. Also exercise and audiobooks.

I had to conscientiously try and find new "fun" things in my life to replace food, which used to be my treat/highlight of my life lol.

I notice a little less joy, pizza used to make me soooo happy lol. Now even if I have pizza- which I still totally can, I just accommodate for it, but it's just like... okay, whatever here's some pizza, cool. I can have 1 or 2 slices and feel fine and not go hog on the entire thing and have it be this amazing fantastic binge.

randycupertino··on What Ozempic does to the gut-brain axis
It definitely has downsides- it's $$, you have to take a shot every single week, I need to make sure to eat enough fiber now or I will not be regular. But that's a positive lifestyle change anyways- essentially am diligent now to ensure I get fiber every single day!

For me the pros outweigh the cons, I don't obsess over food constantly, my belt size went down and my watch band closed a few notches and even my dental hygienist mentioned last week my face was thinner. Overall it's a huge win.

I pay out of pocket $450 a month for it and it's worth it. The money I saw from no more online shopping habit and no more doordashing or drinking probably breaks even.

randycupertino··on What Ozempic does to the gut-brain axis
I'm on GLP-1 and it's completely stopped my urge to online shop. I used to browse/shop for fun and out of habit or when I was stressed out or wanted a treat etc. Entirely resolved! I've also lost 40lbs on it.
randycupertino··on 'Careless People' author claims Meta surveilled her for 12mos to enforce silence
He throws huge temper tantrums and pouts so much when he loses at board games while traveling on the facebook private jet so all his staff conspires to let him win.

I read the book. Also Sheryl Sandberg comes off pretty badly, buying $13,000 worth of lingerie for her "cutie" personal assistants and asking them to wear skimpy pajamas and snuggle with her in the bed on the corporate jet.

There is a lot of corporate private jet related drama in the book.

Good news only!! Why are these history museums just focusing on "how bad slavery was." https://www.cnn.com/2025/08/19/politics/trump-slavery-museum...

> “The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been — Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future,” Trump wrote.

He also asks for two dossiers each day filled of good news only. If there isn't enough good news they fill it with flattering photos: https://www.vice.com/en/article/trump-folder-positive-news-w...

> One White House official said the only feedback the White House communications shop, which prepares the folder, has ever gotten in all these months is: “It needs to be more fucking positive.”

> White House staffers then cull the information, send out clips to other officials, and push favorable headlines to a list of journalists. But they also pick out the most positive bits to give to the president. On days when there aren’t enough positive chyrons, communications staffers will ask the RNC staffers for flattering photos of the president.
