randycupertino··on Zillow wins court fight over private listings, enforcing ban on private listings
This is a big deal towards transparency in the market. Compass runs a private listing system first. When a seller lists with them, the home often goes into Compass private network before it ever hits the public market. Critics say the reason they do this is so Compass agents can have first dibs at their listings and have earlier information vs everyone else on the market. Their strategy is basically to build a massive network of agents, keep more listings inside a private ecosystem, reduce transparency, get more pocket listings.

This ruling will be better for buyers and sellers.

randycupertino··on The shadowy world of abandoned oil tankers
We had to write two certified letters to all the previous owners, then we either filed that reply or the returned unsigned certified mail after 45 days (for each previous owner) we were able finally file a title transfer application with the Department of Wildlife and the DMV, then we had to wait for two letters to clear the title with those organizations and then finally we applied for a new title from the DMV. It was like 3 years of my life. We finally sold it!
randycupertino··on The shadowy world of abandoned oil tankers
When my dad passed away somewhere along the years of various moves and owners of the boat my mom or my uncle of my brother in law had lost the title to the boat and it was such a huge family debacle for YEARS because no one could prove who the owner was and they had to go through the estate to contact each owner of the boat through all the years since it was made every single person who ever had possession of the boat before it could be given away or sold to make sure it was not stolen it was the biggest headache for my mom and sisters and I to deal with. Also the hull, trailer and motor all had separate titles.

Now whenever I see an abandoned boat somewhere I'm like... they must have illegally dumped it because they lost the title and couldn't handle the administrative burden!!

randycupertino··on Super Bowl Ad for Ring Cameras Touted AI Surveillance Network
It's more that police will use it for their own personal inquiries- to track their girlfriends, potential girlfriends etc. This happens enough already with license plate readers:

- Sedgwick, Kansas (2024): Former Police Chief Lee Nygaard resigned after it was discovered he used Flock cameras to track his ex-girlfriend and her new partner 228 times over four months, according to The Wichita Eagle and KAKE.

- Menasha, Wisconsin (Jan 2026): Officer Cristian Morales was charged with misconduct in office for allegedly using the Flock system to track his ex-girlfriend, WLUK-TV reported. Morales admitted to using the system due to "desperation" and "bad judgment".

- Orange City, Florida (2025): Officer Jarmarus Brown was charged with stalking after reportedly running his girlfriend's license plate 69 times, her mother's 24 times, and her brother's 15 times over seven months, the Miami Herald reported.

- San Diego, California (2021): Sergeant Mariusz Czas was arrested for stalking his ex-girlfriend using police resources

randycupertino··on 2025's top clinical trial flops
List bc paywall: Milvexian, Inclacumab, Troriluzole, Anselamimab, Simufilam, Astegolimab, Repibresib, Itepekimab, Monlunabant, Setrusumab

Trends: Gene and cell therapy continue to struggle in humans, and a lot of late stage failures in big expensive phase 2 and 3 trials that fail to meet their primary endpoints, especially in tricky complex diseases- CNS/Neuro, Immunology/Inflammation.

I'd add Navacaprant, Rocket Pharmaceuticals gene therapy, Novo Nordisk semaglutide for Alzheimers and Sarepta's Elevidys gene therapy to the list of biggest failed trials last year.

randycupertino··on Noam Chomsky's wife responds to Epstein controversy
That second one is horrific. I only made it to page 19 of 86 before closing it in disgust. Glad that website saved it. Crazy they are being deleted after being released!
randycupertino··on Noam Chomsky's wife responds to Epstein controversy
I watched some of the videos and you could see DNA paternity tests sitting around on the tables in front of the dancing girls his Manhattan townhouse ( example- 24 seconds in - https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%2010/EFTA01648...) .

Interestingly if you change the last couple of digits in the video links to just any random number combo it unlocks a ton more (many awful, disgusting) videos. Changing the file names from .mp4 to .mov also opens up more, and changing file names in the links from .pdf to .mp4

The most interesting thing I've found is the word "don't" is often randomly redacted in emails which makes me think they ran a script to auto-redact "Don T" among other things. Example: https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%2011/EFTA02440...

Edit- also, to add, the craziest part of the entire files to me was how much awful stuff I could find just merely poking around. If you put in the name of any of his multiple girlfriends/victim recruiters - for example natalie malyshev you can find them sending him photos of underage girls with him replying ranking them - too old, too asian (many were rejected for being too asian), too fat. There is one being evaluated who is only 10!

randycupertino··on Meow-1: Biopharmaceutical Company Is Testing Weight Loss Drug for Cats
> According to a report in ABC News, a landmark new study called MEOW-1 is being launched by San Francisco-based biopharmaceutical company Okava to test a GLP-1 medication on up to 50 overweight cats. A miniature implant, labeled OKV-119, will administer GLP-1 medication to cats in this study continuously for up to six months.

> Okava CEO Michael Klotsman claims the company will seek FDA approval for the product between 2027 and 2028.

Fixing the work culture in South Korea would go a lot further to help this vs importing women. Nobody has time for kids when both parents are working 10-14 hours per day.
randycupertino··on FDA intends to take action against non-FDA-approved GLP-1 drugs
> The US is the only country, aside from New Zealand, that allows direct-to-consumer marketing of prescription only medicines.

What interesting here is that Hims & Hers are able to skirt the pharmaceutical marketing regulations. They are able to blanket the world in their ads whereas pharma companies have to abide by strict safety information requirements in their commercials. Him/Hers give literally zero safety and side effect info.

The other weird thing is that the companies like Hims/Hers are basically dial a script. You call them and get whatever you want. They probably deny no one and don't turn anyone away. Unethical and lacks physician oversight.

randycupertino··on FDA intends to take action against non-FDA-approved GLP-1 drugs

randycupertino··on The time I didn't meet Jeffrey Epstein
I interviewed and had an offer from Theranos. They were super slimey, and this was before they were known as a fraud.

- Sunny asked me why I went to such an unprestigious academic institution for undergrad

- Sunny flipped out at an extension cord going to the table AV setup in the meeting room. He called in 5 IT people and yelled at them during my interview about the extension cord and yanked it out of the wall.

- Elizabeth and Sunny parked their Lamborginis in the handicapped parking spaces directly in front of the office

- When I got the offer, the fine print noted the location my office would actually be located in was NOT at the fancy HQ in Palo Alto where they had recruited me at and showed me that I would be working, it was at a trailer park on the east side of highway 101 in Menlo Park (um, no thanks. Part of the reason I passed).

- part of the hiring process was to go get your blood tested by them and my lab results were discordant with my lab results from Stanford so it showed their testing didn't actually work

- security stood outside the restroom stall while I peed before the interview and came in with me while I washed my hands.

- Elizabeth rescheduled my interview with her 4x, once with 18 minutes notice. Their entire process took 3 months and 7 rounds.

randycupertino··on Vertex's CRISPR treatment for sickle cell disease hits unexpected roadblock
Cell-collection continues to be challenging for gene-editing companies to execute clinically.

“Some patients have had to come in for five different hospital stays. A small percentage have given up during the journey or been told by physicians that they are unlikely to ever have enough cells to be treated, devastating news for patients who were hoping to be cured.

A spokesperson added that Vertex tells centers to expect roughly 24 weeks from the first collection to finished product and that ‘in the vast majority of cases, this target is hit’ and that ‘the turnaround is usually shorter.’ But the company declined to share actual data.”

One advantage Bluebird's Lyfgenia has over Vertex’s Casgevy in that it requires fewer cells to be collected for gene correction, although they also has issues with collection. Effectively collecting HSCs remains a sticking point despite developments in mobilization and collection techniques. Multiple collections and collection cycles is always going to be tough to operationalize on actual patients.

randycupertino··on DHS Hunts Down 67-Year-Old U.S. Citizen Who Criticized Them in Email
> Later that day, Jon received an email from Google notifying him that an administrative subpoena had been sent to them from the Department of Homeland Security “compelling the release of information related to your Google Account.” Federal agencies can issue such subpoenas without an order from a judge or grand jury, and Google gave Jon, who withheld his last name to protect his family from the government, one week to challenge it.

> Laws are supposed to restrict the use of administrative subpoenas, but DHS has used the tool against dissent protected under the First Amendment to the Constitution. Jon could not find who in the agency issued the subpoena, let alone a record of it to show an attorney.

> Days later, DHS agents showed up at Jon’s door.

> Both Google and Meta received a record number of subpoenas in the United States during the first half of 2025 as Trump’s second term began, with Google receiving 28,622, a 15 percent increase over the previous six months.

randycupertino··on Peloton lays off 11 percent of staff just after launching its AI hardware
Not surprising, hardware demand is decreasing, subscriber churn is up and the trendiness of peloton during peak COVID hype has worn off. They've been on a cost-cutting spree including headcount, lower cost instructors, more repeated content, and cheaper, less-robust hardware. All of which is lowering experience and imo gonna cause even more of a death spiral.
randycupertino··on Autonomous cars, drones cheerfully obey prompt injection by road sign
> In a new class of attack on AI systems, troublemakers can carry out these environmental indirect prompt injection attacks to hijack decision-making processes.

I have a coworker who brags about intentionally cutting off Waymos and robocars when he sees them on the road. He is "anti-clanker" and views it as civil disobedience to rise up against "machines taking over." Some mornings he comes in all hyped up talking about how he cut one off at a stop sign. It's weird.

randycupertino··on AI’s impact on engineering jobs may be different than expected
I routinely see this in biotech, I've seen hiring managers from our Clinical Science team blatantly discriminate against candidates not on linkedin, even if they come with a strong referral and have 15-page super thorough CVs with 150 credible publication references. "Oh, they're not on linkedin, this person is sketchy" - immediately disqualifies candidate.

I had a pretty slim linkedin and actually beefed it up after seeing how much weight the execs and higher ups I work with give it. It's really annoying, I actually hate linkedin but basically got forced into using it.

randycupertino··on Trump's use of AI images pushes boundaries, erodes public trust, say experts
What's craziest to me about their editing her image is that they made her skin tone darker, which imo has racist implications. They also made her look older and fatter, and more disheveled, lowering her top. Just awful all-around.
randycupertino··on There's only one Woz, but we can all learn from him
I sat next to him in business class on a flight back from Poland to the SF a few years ago and he was so gracious, talking with and taking photos with all his seatmates. I just wanted to sleep because I was coming back from a conference and I was actually annoyed with all the "fanfare" around him which was loud and kept everyone up! It must have been hard for him to constantly deal with. He was super nice though and made time for everyone who wanted to chat with him.

My other airline celebrity encounter was Pauly Shore, who I was standing next to at the baggage carosel and thought to myself, "huh this guy sounds just like Pauly Shore" and lo - it was the man (and his entourage) himself. I always thought the voice was an affectation but nope he actually does talk like that. Woz was definitely more exciting to encouter!
