randomperson_24··on Googlespeak – How Google limits thought about antitrust
It is also not just Google. Google atleast curates the content, but has anyone used MSN or Edge (that comes with Windows)?

It has all news stories copied word to word from other news websites. Its worse than AMP. The publication name is not mentioned till the end of the page.

randomperson_24··on TikTok overtakes Facebook as most downloaded app
I guess it comes pre installed on Android, which has a huge market share globally.
randomperson_24··on Nepalese student learns HTML, JavaScript, CSS using just a mobile phone
A big problem I have seen with Pi in India is that it overheats and throttles heavily because the the temperature is usually high. With additonal cost of a good power supply, monitor, HDMI cable, its not worth it.

IMO a better device will be a laptop ~ 80 USD with an ARM processor and basic specs - especially a good in-built speaker.

randomperson_24··on Google Drive bans distribution of “misleading content”
We need and will (and also do) have other alternatives. But as soon as it grows big enough to get public attention, censorship will come. Cause majority wants that.
randomperson_24··on Facebook users said no to tracking, and now advertisers are panicking
I mean this is amazing!

But, doesn't this increase competition for any other advertiser who doesn't have all historic data and algorithm Facebook has had.

randomperson_24··on France fines Google €500M over copyright row
This is just increasing competition in the search space. Any new search engine who is growing big will also have to pay to just "link" another website. And in most cases not be able to afford it.

This is not how I imagine the internet to work :(

This was just lobbying done by newspapers who are dying to social media and better news channels.

randomperson_24··on Tesla’s $16k Quote for a $700 Fix Is Why Right to Repair Matters
The fact that (a big part of) HN crowd does not understand Right to Repair is - shocking!
randomperson_24··on Apple Maps vs. Google Maps
Apple Maps is unusable in any city that is not US City OR Big City in Europe.
randomperson_24··on 80% of my traffic is excluded from Google Analytics
True
randomperson_24··on 80% of my traffic is excluded from Google Analytics
It's not just Google Analytics, but any other alternative be it plausible, Matomo, or any other JS analytics solution.

I would also say cloudflare doesn't count uniqu visitors accurately. Also recently there is big uptick in bots which server logs show, but are not real users.

randomperson_24··on GitHub confirmed using all public code for training copilot regardless license
So, if any public code is allowed and we let it slip through. Google can say for example see all text on Google Docs and __sell__ a solution that generates text for you. Is this allowed?

What about images?

randomperson_24··on Our plans to improve navigation on Gov.uk
They are probably using enterprise version of Google Analytics, where data isn't associated with activity on Google and not used for advertising.
randomperson_24··on Ask HN: You have one shot to redesign the Internet – what do you change?
Encrypted SNI and No Paywalls
randomperson_24··on Australia opposes Great Barrier Reef ′in danger′ listing
Exactly!
randomperson_24··on Brave, the false sensation of privacy
Can't we just like use Brave / Firefox and block all tracking domain names with something like pihole?

Does the browser not at all work then?

randomperson_24··on How to track users for analytics in a privacy-first, cookie-less future
Isn't this even more creepy?
randomperson_24··on Tim Cook: Sideloading is “not in the best interests of the user”
Reading Sheeple talks are always fun.

It's about choice. Even on android, there are many horrible popups that android warns the user before installing any app outside Play Store. (The Epic lawsuit also complained about this) If the user wants to do then give them the choice. Giving Choice is the problematic part.

The security thing is just a joke. The walled garden isn't safe (https://www.theverge.com/2021/4/21/22385859/apple-app-store-...)

randomperson_24··on No one likes ads. So let’s do something about it
Youtube has a really good option for this. Like if the creator checks a box, then when the video starts in top left, a small popup comes that its a paid endorsement. Just the user knowing before they watch or read the entire thing is probably enough and what that matters.

Also, lots of TV shows do not need to disclose that but on internet everyone has to which IMO is better.

randomperson_24··on No one likes ads. So let’s do something about it
Also, how will disclosure work? If I use an image in my Youtube video, do I need to declare that it was taken from Unsplash which was sponsored in a way by Square?
randomperson_24··on No one likes ads. So let’s do something about it
In my opinion, manipulative ads based on challenging your emotions and the fomo they create are worse than the current plastering of graphics.

If someone is interested they will click on it, if not then why manipulate their minds and play with emotions. (Coca-Cola is a primary example)

randomperson_24··on Apple’s podcast subscriptions went live today–with a 30 percent cut
They will now block audio analytics in Safari (if you listen to podcasts in browser) and also block some APIs for other Devs. If you want more insights publish on Apple Podcasts.

Also want to subscribe to a podcast on Spotify, no you can't. Spotify can't even mention it that such an option is available:D

randomperson_24··on How do I opt my access point out of Google Location services?
Apple already does that and based on what I found there is no way for your router to opt out.

randomperson_24··on How do I opt my access point out of Google Location services?
Apple is doing that since iOS 5 (the oldest I could find) and there is probably no way to opt out. In fact it's even worse.

Source: https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT202339

But apple is good while Google bad :)

Edit: found out a newer post [1] with absolutely no mention on how to opt out.

They also send barometeric pressure level for some reason. They might also start sending device temps to predict the temperature at different places across globe and "help their customers" [1] https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203033

randomperson_24··on Global banking regulators call for toughest rules for cryptocurrencies
They are just afraid banks will be running out of business with exorbitant fees and useless charges. They will need to evolve otherwise lots of other startups will be replacing their need.
randomperson_24··on Will Apple Mail threaten the newsletter boom?
What about Fonts and CSS, will that too be proxied and auto downloaded? if not then Substack, etc will start using that to track open-rates.
randomperson_24··on Raspberry Pi WiFi to ethernet bridge
This is amazing! was looking for this exact solution :D
randomperson_24··on Will Apple Mail threaten the newsletter boom?
Also, don't forget the 30% cut they will take for premium newsletters.
randomperson_24··on Will Apple Mail threaten the newsletter boom?
That is what will happen. Send an excerpt and to view the full post click on the link, which will be tracked along with the website which serves content filled with javascript trackers and cookies :(
randomperson_24··on Will Apple Mail threaten the newsletter boom?
I believe Apple just doesn't block it. It by default downloads all pixels (and images) for all emails so the sender cannot know if and when the reader actually opened it. It will by default show 100% open rate. But, won't it be a problem? like some malicious actor could send lots of emails with 10s of MBs of image embeds and if Apple Mail automatically downloads it, then the storage will unnecessarily fill up. Is there a countermeasure to it which Apple has mentioned?
