randomerr··on What's the Difference Between a Frat and a Gang?
IMHO:

* Frat have a publicly stated organization with a written creed and legal status, gangs do not

* Frats have at least some publicly held and organized meeting, gangs do not

* Frats can be disbanded by the college or parent fraternal order, gangs do not

* You can attend college with college with out belonging to a frat. If you can live in a crime ridden community without belonging to gang you don;t have to belong to a gang as well. But its easier to join a gang and get a familial support structure you wouldn't have without the gang.

Frats can be a good and bad thing. But any organization can have bad actor: churches, government, Facebook, any open forums, ect.

randomerr··on Bird populations in French countryside have fallen by a third in fifteen years
We've been seeing a similar issue in Ohio with our apiaries (bee hives). For us it has been three items. I can image it's the same in Europe:

* Varroa mite - a Chinese mite that spread to Europe and then the by cross species breeds. It bites into the side of a bee. Adult bees are usually strong enough withstand the bites. But the mite's feeding leaves holes in the shell that never really heal and makes it easy to contact diseases like Fowl Brood Hive Disease.

When the mite hit the brood (aka larva) they'll grow up in cell with the brood. Regular brood will have the mites cleaned off or the brood and mite larva will be removed as soon as possible. But drones have a longer gestation period and deeper cells. By the time the drone emerges the mite has already gone through it's full life cycle and is ready to restart the process attaching to nurse bees. Ohio would have eradicated it by now but neighboring states don't regulate their hive.

* Fowl Brood Hive Disease - It's bacterium that spreads on contact between bees. Since bees are very social it spreads very easy. Remember when a bees stings something it dies, so why fight when you don't have to? Plus queens prefer to breed with other hives to prevent genetics stagnation.

When a brood has been infected it forms scales on it's shell and begins to for scales similar to Harlequin Ichthyosis in humans. If they die in the cell the nurse bees will remove the decaying brood. In the process the nurse bees also get the spores on them spreading the disease in them. At the point the only good way to stop the disease is to kill the whole hive, clean out the hive, and boil everything. Again Ohio would have eradicated it by now but neighboring states don't regulate their hive.

* Genetically altered crops - We have enough floral diversity in our wetlands, open fields, forests, and private gardens to feed our bees. But we sees build-up of genetically modified pollen that has a pesticide in it. The first couple years of a hive theirs no issue. But around year 3 we can almost count on total hive collapse. Its because the pesticide builds up in the wax they keep rebuilding for the brood, nectar, and honey storage. Eventually to get so strong it poisons the brood or the hive swarms to find a better location.

randomerr··on Sources: Google is buying Lytro for about $40M
I think its more that what the tech is for the Pixel 2 Super XL edition or Pixel 3. That would let you build a 3d photo and post it to Google Photos. Or maybe they could partner up with a 3D printing company the way you can print photo albums.
randomerr··on Reduce GPS data error on Android with Kalman filter and accelerometer
I would love to plug a cheap accelerometer an get these efficiencies. But it leaves me some questions:

* Will these techniques work on a stock Android device for stock programs (ie Google Maps)?

* Will the different (extra?) calculations cause my processor's calculation to go up, killing battery life? I didn't see any testing on this and your statements seemed questionable - "Herewith, the algorithm should not consume whole battery within 3 minutes as well as all available RAM."

Doesn't Android already have similar filters? I would assume they do since they've been in the business for a while.

This looks like great theoretical ideas. I hope you can use it to get a job at Google or turn it into a marketable product.

randomerr··on Bitcoin on trial as prolific trader faces money laundering charges
Money laundering with digital coins on small and large scale is going to become more and more common.

Look at Trump's ban on Venezuela's Petro Coins. Petro Coins are nothing more then a way for Venezuela to get around US sanctions. The Petro would be untracable so we wouldn't know who is supporting Venezuela. I would expect North Korea has thier own digital cryptocurreny coming out soon to launder money into the country.

randomerr··on Web beacon
So the beacon tracks a user by their IP address and browser client information. Advertisers/marketers have you put a 1px x 1px transparent GIF or PNG image on your pages or in an email blast. The image is hosted on their remote server. Then the remote server put your information into a database. By cross-referencing your IP browser agent information they can track you by without creating a cookie, local storage, or indexed database anymore.

At least the Mozilla foundation is trying to to create an Opt-Out standard. But who says any of them will adopt this standard.

randomerr··on Can Chrome Sync or Firefox Sync be trusted with sensitive data?
It sounds like the answer is 'no, unless you encrypt the data before you place it on one of those services.' Which almost defeats the reason for using the service.
randomerr··on An Analysis of the Impact of Arbitrary Blockchain Content on Bitcoin [pdf]
If you can trade and breed Pokemon-esque creature in the blockchain, why not illegal content? It's practically untraceable and you don't have to go to trouble of running something like and onion skin router to obscure your identity.

randomerr··on Quiver – The Programmer's Notebook
Is this an Electron app? If so, can it be ported to Windows and Linux?
randomerr··on Booting Windows NT 4 on a DEC Multia
I remember a local college loved them because you could teach 3d modeling. They really weren't used for the actual modelling but rather as cheap render farms that could run at night.
randomerr··on Booting Windows NT 4 on a DEC Multia
I miss the simplicity of the NT / 2003 era of servers. You could make setup as simple or as complex as you now. Now you have to have a BSA to configure so many arbitrary standards just to connect to a NAS.

randomerr··on The Server Market Booms, and It Could Last for a While
for my industry we have regulation that require we keep all the data in-house. Also we need low latency. We can't get either from cloud services. We're hoping ARM servers mature so we don't have the power consumption and heat to deal with.
randomerr··on Interesting use of the console by the BBC News website
I think its that console browser are more powerful now and can run standard websites now.
randomerr··on Eclipse Open J9, an Open Source Java Virtual Machine
It sounds like IBM made more of a IBM .NET. They just added a way to compile Java 8.x to a binary object that runs on the J9 engine. I wouldn't be surprise if someone tries to port C# to J9.
randomerr··on Twitter Is Rethinking Everything. At Last
It the same thing as with YouTube. You need more human interaction and less bots to take care of issue. You also need to listen to your users. They've been tell you about these issue and given you ways to fix your issues.
randomerr··on Email clients for SMTP/POP3 email address
I think you men just put in the email address and the application will set itself up. Microsoft Mail and Mozilla Thunderbird (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/) will do that for you for the most part. Gmail will let you link up to 5 external email accounts. (https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/import-manage-multiple-email-a...) You still may have to do some configuration but they're the easiest I know of.

Hope that helps.

randomerr··on How I Made my own Smart Glass Under $10
It's over 8,000!

Seriously, very cool. My only critics:

* There is a lot of sharp edges. It really needs buffing.

* The plastic could be a little thinner because it look heavy.

Still very cool.

randomerr··on Twitter in the blockchain? Is already here

randomerr··on BestBuy is closing all 250 of its mobile stores in the US
Honestly, I didn't think there was any left. Since I can go to the grocery store and pick up a phone now. At least that will give Radio Shack a shot in the arm. Remember in the 80's and early 90's Radio Shack was the place to get cell phone.

randomerr··on The OS that is aiming for a 10 year life-cycle in smartphones
Give a low cost phone I can put it on and I use it. At least make a Raspberry Pi distro to develop on.
randomerr··on LittleThings online publisher shuts down, blames Facebook's algorithm
Facebook went through the same kind of issue themselves. At one point Zynga Games (Farmville fame) was about 70% of Facebook's profits. Then the variety of phones apps and copycat games Facebook without the ads became popular. This almost killed Zynga and by proxy Facebook. That was about the time Zuckerberg also stepped down. Odd timing.

In the business world many people say you should never put more the 30% of budget at anytime in one market onless yuo have a way to switch out of it. Since 75% of LittleThings' traffic came from Facebook a YouTube style adpocolipse scenario was bound to happen eventually.

randomerr··on Google Hangouts Chat
Voice - You can 'text' to each other. Although ig you're both using Google Voice you're really just IM'ing.

Technically Google Talk is still around but yo have to use a third party Jabber server.

Each Google Document has whats left of Google Chat built into it which allows anonymous chatting.

randomerr··on When it comes to election meddling, America is as guilty as Russia
That's why we haven't levels too many sanctions against Russia.
randomerr··on Ask HN: How do you make apps?
For portability I usually just use Bootstrap (https://getbootstrap.com/) or template with a basic layout and fill it in with HandlebarsJS (https://handlebarsjs.com/) and jQuery. To compile apps I will use:

* Nativefier for desktop application to create a basic Electron application from a website (https://github.com/jiahaog/nativefier)

* Web2Executable to convert a local set of HTML and NodeJS to a NWJS binary file (https://github.com/jyapayne/Web2Executable) - FYI: NWJS, or NodeJS + Webkit and then Chrome rendering engine, is the code that Electron is based on. The big difference is that NWJS doesn't require all the structure that Electron does. So NWJS is easier to develop for but in some cases not as fast to execute.

* Appsgeyser.com (http://appsgeyser.com) can convert either a website or a zip file to an Android application

* GoNative.io (https://gonative.io/) will create apps for Android and iOS. But some of the advance features are stuck behind a paywall.
