rando289··on MiniLock – File encryption software that does more with less
I don't see any evidence of the feedback being "for things like UX"

I also don't think the word homebrew is appropriate. Afaik homebrew means, 1 making beer at home. 2 apple package manager. 3. Term generally for endeavours connected to corporate products/projects but themselves small and independent.

rando289··on MiniLock – File encryption software that does more with less
It is in a "a feedback period", exactly so they can get the feedback like you just gave. So get off your high horse about taking things down.
rando289··on Google+ now lets you use any name you want
> spend their time wondering about all these digital ants in the digital ant farm and wondering what we're all about?

This announcement certainly reinforces that notion. Google+ announces as an anonymous "we", that their name policy "helped create a community made up of real people." As opposed to fake people? Anonymous people are real, so is this a reference to bots? The name policy prevented bots? No. It didn't. This is ridiculous corporate code language. So ya, pushing around their digital ants is exactly how this announcement reads.

> From what this guy describes, "test prep" sounds like "educating students".

It's educating them in the wrong things. For example, goal of class: better thinker by learning to do multiplication. Because of test, they only learned memorizing multiplication tables.

rando289··on CentOS 7 released on x86_64
Agreed. Config files 100 times bigger and more complicated. Why? Go to it's home page and find a link that says "differences between GRUB Legacy and GRUB" which simply goes to the grub .97 manual which says absolutely nothing about differences between the 2 versions. They really care about their users, that's for sure.
rando289··on Why Everyone Should be Concerned By the Seizure of MyRedBook.com
> illegal posts

It is illegal for certain people to post certain things at certain locations on the internet. Posts aren't inherently illegal and I think you are missing the nuance more than the eff is.

> Is the EFF saying the FBI should have targeted specific illegal posts instead of taking down legal material as well?

What kind of question is that. It's like "Are you really saying that if someone put graffiti on your house, the FBI should paint over each letter instead of simply using a bulldozer?"

rando289··on Node's nested node_modules approach is basically incompatible with Windows
Yes, fine by me.
rando289··on Abstract software patents struck down by Supreme Court
EFF didn't say patents were evil. I can do that too:

Despite inane anonymous commenting syndrome, you are a person, you are not evil, you are just a person.

rando289··on Node's nested node_modules approach is basically incompatible with Windows
windows has path length limits. Figure out how to live in them, whatever way is best. If that means using cryptic names, then do it. cryptic folder names, while not a good thing, are extremely common in windows.
rando289··on FCC gets Comcast, Verizon to reveal Netflix’s paid peering deals
And the only way to break that claim is to give MORE MBps than that. I think the fcc is saying "ok, let's be realistic, your 'up to' is gonna be held to a standard higher than rando48 on hacker news saying I personally guarantee internet downloads of up to 1 billion MBps to ever citizen on earth."

> Could someone explain what the thing with East Texas is? A district where juries and judges are more favorable than usual towards patents?

It started a bit randomly, based on the politics of the region the judges/juries were slightly more favorable toward patents than anywhere else. Then it became self perpetuating since it helps the local economy & the judges own careers.

> This sound kind-of ridiculous, no?

Absolutely ridiculous. Patents are federal law, but 1 small region is effectively making serious changes to that legislation.

> Can't the defending companies find similar anti-patent areas and file counter-suites there?

They do. There are a range of locations, never in east texas. No one place has emerged as THE anti-patent location. For example, Microsoft files suit in Seattle since it's based there, has influence, people want it to win since it's a benefit to their local economy, etc.

rando289··on Google+ broke our trust
> Why would someone make a video of themselves crying and post it on the internet?

More interesting: Why would someone make a well writtenish comment on the internet that is quite negative toward someone crying on the internet?

edit: you edited the quote out from underneath me. Good call imo.

rando289··on Google+ broke our trust
> Hey, I can find videos of people angry at about anything that exists.

Actually, you can't, and your post is a bit rediculous.

For "features of websites that are widely used", how many of them are part of youtube crying videos? Probably ~0.0001% and it certainly could be useful to call one out.

So much agree. Another big design flaw hampering good conversation: I'd like to read replies to your comment, but HN funnels me to reading only 1 reply, and then onto 1 reply for that comment, each one hijacking the conversation. And we can't collapse threads which makes it even worse.

If your leg has a medical problem, get well soon, do everything medically needed. If your brain has a medical problem, people will treat you very differently. Voices like yours will hopefully change that over time.

I don't see any evidence of him having a medical problem, but he surely deserves our compassion.

> we lose any chance at morality Our morality is mostly learned. It can grow.

Yes, we do need the source to be available.

rando289··on The Robot Car of Tomorrow May Just Be Programmed to Hit You
It is a real problem. It should be fairly obvious that it is. More realistically, It won't be a real time decision of hit this or that, it will be that it is programmed to do behavior X instead of Y. X is known to be 30% more likely to hit a pedestrian, but 10% less likely overall to be in any accident. Then you dramatize it by saying the car decided to hit a pedestrian instead of a car. Just substitute the behavior described in the story or some variation.
rando289··on Doctors flunk quiz on screening-test math
The simple fact is that mathematical problem solving is a rarely used skill for doctors and most professions which require extensive schooling. I'm confident the doctor in this case would immediately test multiple times to rule out false positives, just because thats what the medical literature on this rare disease says to do. And if he didn't, it would be a mistake, which happens a lot in medicine, but it doesn't have much to do with doctors ability to solve math problems.

rando289··on It's Different for Girls
There's nothing about that in the post, and I don't think it's relevant. There are many song titles which have a negative connotation towards women (especially in rap). I couldn't name a blog post the same as one of them, then later say, "I understand how you could see this as a bad thing, but I was just thinking of some song title you've never heard of." It doesn't work that way.

And, she does call herself a girl once more, not just in the title. Perhaps someone said that sentence in a movie, so it will somehow not mean what it says either.

And even if it is an unspoken reference, that doesn't explain how the title should be interpreted differently. It's a pop song, and according to wikipedia the lyrics aren't especially relevant to the contents of her post.

“Every time I see the word ‘Girl’ used in scenarios that are supposed to empower women, it really grates on me,” http://www.forbes.com/sites/kashmirhill/2013/01/30/girls-lad...

It bothers me too. The article is otherwise great.

google, define: girl "1. a female child. 2. a young or relatively young woman."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girl: "A girl is any female human from birth through childhood and adolescence to attainment of adulthood when she becomes a woman."

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/girl: "a : a female child from birth to adulthood

...

d : sometimes offensive : a single or married woman of any age"

In this case, it seems like she is trying to sound cute or informal while unwittingly reinforcing the perception of women as child-like.

rando289··on It's Different for Girls
I like the article, but I must point out this one thing I don't want it to perpetuate.
