rand846633··on Ask HN: How do you stop someone from promoting a fake GitHub?
If you manage to get something done, please be so kind and let us know here. Good luck!
rand846633··on How spies are caught (2001)
Sure, you are right. The article basically says: “don’t do it cause we will catch you for sure” & “only people with character flaw as would consider doing it anyways”. My point was mostly about the mention of catching spies when the approach signal stations.
rand846633··on How spies are caught (2001)
Every keystroke on every device of every employee with access to sensitive data? Not sure how that would be implemented, do you think all their phones and private devices have some government Spyware running hidden in the background? Could be, but who knows…
rand846633··on How spies are caught (2001)
Looked for the publishing date when I read the line with the signal site. I’m sure it’s harder today to find the communication methods of spies when they can use any website.
rand846633··on Microsoft has detected nation-state activity associated with NOBELIUM
Do you have any links to events that you would suspect of being of the described nature: done by crime actors and described as done by any nato state by some non nato state?

I’m only aware of this happening the other way round (.ru crime actors doing things Moscow needs done, ddos on Estonia etc etc)

I’d love to read more on this.

rand846633··on Facebook is planning to change its name, report says
Do you recon we would know if they had done so?
rand846633··on Former Netflix executive convicted of receiving bribes from contractors
I don’t see offshore leeks as a big deterrent, unfortunately. The three big ICIJ leaks were not published as in dumped to the public. Only politicians, PEPs, obvious money launderers and some obvious other criminals were selected and exposed. (It’s only money laundering if you can proof the money comes from the proceedings of crime)

There are some criminal service industry leaks that are public, or have been public, yet it doesn’t appear more than a few individual have the motivation to follow trough in combing them. At least this is true for groups who would publish on their findings.

> Happy to answer any questions.

Assuming the receiver uses a proper offshore construct to accept the payment, this would go by unnoticed by your DD?

But most interesting: What is your best guess - Your partner says you find “a hand full” from a few hundred - how many of these cases do you miss because the recipients use a not easy traceable proxy entity to collect the payment?

Do you try to uncover such hidden actions, if yes, how?

Also, is there a good reason why someone would not use a offshore proxy/holding?

rand846633··on Foreign money floods U.S. tax havens. Some of it is tainted
For sure money has different gradients of taint.
rand846633··on Pandora Papers: is the world’s biggest leak the world’s biggest cover-up?
Many reasons, but the main one being you can use Delaware to hide the ownership of your companies.

rand846633··on The Nobel Peace Prize 2021
I don’t think you statement is correct. Multiple colleges of Muratov have been assassinated. Muratov never knew he would live this long, by continuing his work he has continuously endangered not only his freedom but also his live.
rand846633··on Phrack Issue 70
Down for me since over 24h. Anyone got a full mirrored link?
rand846633··on Brave and Firefox to intercept links that force-open in Microsoft Edge
They went back from “extinguish” to “embrace&extend” so it felt a bit difference for a while.
rand846633··on As Bikers Throng the Streets, ‘It’s Like Paris Is in Anarchy’
It seems absolutely outer worldly to want to optimize the layout of a city to prevent crime. Apart from the assumption being quite questionable that there even exists a connection. People live their lives in these things, they need to be optimize for many other factors to produce a environment enabling a the highest quality of living possible, crime is just a small factor. If one would want to present crime there would be plenty of things to do, changing street layouts might move crime a bit, but for sure won’t enable it.
rand846633··on He escaped the dark web's biggest bust, and now he's back
True. You could also make the argument that journalism has declined because people will click on anything.
rand846633··on He escaped the dark web's biggest bust, and now he's back
Insulting a whole profession because of some apparent mistakes of an individual seems quite idiotic as well.
rand846633··on He escaped the dark web's biggest bust, and now he's back
Why would LE not do both?

No way this is not a honeypot. Wondering if wired does not know or does not care.
rand846633··on This implanted microchip may one day control your sleep
Can’t wait to use this while flying on an airplane. This will basically make flying like teleportation, just that you also arrive freshly sleep at the destination.
rand846633··on Tribler: Search and download torrents with less worries or censorship
Don’t you owe it the audience her to back up your claims with facts or at least details?
rand846633··on Don't insult me with your pricing (2019)
I hope OP does not ever use amazon.
rand846633··on Ask HN: Help me get my friend,a retired US Army officer, into IT management
The 2 million killed Vietnamese and the approx 400k Iraqis would probably care to differ. I hardly think that you are correct that fact that there is one of more jurisdictions that legalise oversee murder does not mean it is not murder (USA), it just means that a certain group of people don't regard it as murder. It's also hard to see why one is obliged to be sensitive towards people who sign up to kill others. Calling a soldier a murderer is never even a fractal as insensitive as committing the violence in the first place.
rand846633··on Why US troops wear ceramic plates instead of just kevlar
This article is low on information. Reads almost like propaganda to me. I would expect a serious article about this topic to shed light on the practical usefulness of the armory. It more of less just name drops a few fancy material that are used.

rand846633··on What's the weirdest/best thing you've done?
I would not think of it as dangerous. Apart from the danger of car accidents etc etc. Some interesting places on the way, Turkmenistan is particularly strange, like the slightly moderated not known little brother of North Korea.

It took 11 month an 40k km all in all. But it was 80% detours. Had to leave my car at the boarder to China. No chance to take it there. The most magnificent place on the way was Iran for sure. Lovely people with a hate for their own government and not afraid at all to voice their contempt for religious fanatics, the city dwellers at least.

rand846633··on What's the weirdest/best thing you've done?
Drove to China from Portugal with a old car. Tried to find the concentration camps in Xinjiang. Got detained twice, was so much fun! Chinese police a really really funny (if you have the right passport).
rand846633··on Ask HN: How does performance appraisals happen in your organisation?
What is or what means “curve”?
rand846633··on Ask HN: For those who use Chrome, why do you?
One reason is that chrome vulnerabilities are between 3 and 5 times more expensive. And thus, I would guess, more rare.

rand846633··on Ask HN: For those who use Chrome, why do you?
I’m sure it says somewhere but i could not find out what version of chrome(chromium?) brave is based on while trying to find this out for maybe 5 minutes. So, just to be sure i am not installing an browser with known vulnerability I’ll stick with chrome for now.
rand846633··on Ask HN: For those who use Chrome, why do you?
Only one reason: Chrome has hands down the best security track record.
