ramshanker··on A Big Week for RISC-V
Sometimes, I wonder, what if Jim Keller decided to take on RISC-V and delivered an open source implementation, which is as good as current x86 or ARM hardware. People / companies would move swiftly I guess.
ramshanker··on Growing a mango tree from seed – one year time lapse [video]
Something is so beautiful about this video. Totally awe....
ramshanker··on PDEs you should know
No navier-Stocks equation? or is it in there with a different name.
ramshanker··on Understanding the global chip shortages
This is also my suspicion. Further, since ALL the GPUs are being eaten up by crypto miners, people are calling it Unpresented demand. As for when It shall end? My take is when Ethernum switches to Proof of Stake model. By keeping the switch 6 months away forever, they hare in a way hindering the creation of ASIC miners, forcing everyone to use GPUs..... Once all those crypto GUPs reinter the gaming market, half the computer side supply problems would be gone.
ramshanker··on The Formation of IPv4 Address Markets (2021)
Slightly tangent: Indian government has mandated all ISPs to upgrade all customers as IPv6 compatible by 31st December 2022. So India will be 100% IPv6 compatible by end of the year.

Once that happens, I wouldn't be surprised if IPv4 is deprecated along with 2G.

ramshanker··on The great renaming: what happened to Eth2?
As I understand, it’s complete open source. So what is preventing a couple of miners to team up and change some integer to say year 2100 & recompile and distribute?
ramshanker··on How to design a house to last 1000 years
The moment I saw the diagram text "Seismic moment connection with Fuses", I knew it was not meant to last 1000 year. The moment you introduce seismic fuses, you need active Repair post a large earthquake. This is like expecting to keep repairing every few years and claim Life.

My first though reading the title was, you need to build it with STONE. So was "Taj Mahal" and many other religious structure lasting LONG years.

ramshanker··on Happy New Year HN! What are your plans for the new year?
De-addiction of Tech News sites. Feeling like I consume too much time reading news, and too little doing on my side projects. Time to reverse it. i.e. more focus on shipping something.
ramshanker··on IPv6-only subnets and EC2 instances
India has mandated IPv6 for all existing or new internet connection by Dec 2022.
ramshanker··on India-Department of Telecommunication set Dec 2022 IPv6 migration deadline [pdf]
TLDR: All government services to be on IPv6 by 30 June 2022. All new consumer connections must have IPv6 after 31st Dec 2022. All existing consumer CPE must be upgraded to support IPv6 by Dec 2022.

I was eagerly awaiting this regulatory intervention. Glad to see it coming soon.

ramshanker··on Nitrogen fertilizer shortage threatens to cut global crop yields – CF Industries
Ahh, well one of the large fertiliser plant coming online soon in India.

Disclosure: My company has 26% stake in this.

ramshanker··on M(57885161) verified as 48th Mersenne Prime
I imagine, one day when we finally break the factoring problem, we are going to have a bunch of these prime. This is one of the things I prat to see in my remaining lifetime.
ramshanker··on Apple execs describe a “unique arrangement” with Netflix (2018)
I am of the opinion that the whole "Reader apps" concept itself was brought in to selectively please big and important players. The ones whose absence would diminish the value of iPhone. Indie developer's can't be expected to get same treatment.
ramshanker··on Found a program I wrote in 1981 and decided to bring it back to life
>>>>for non-old-timers, it was fairly common back in the day for magazines to publish code printouts, that users would then type in by hand to run on their computers<<<<

Yea, HTML/Javascript code in the newspaper for me. Too bad, I had to do the running of the code in my head only.

ramshanker··on Serving Netflix Video at 400Gb/s on FreeBSD [pdf]
Meanwhile my internet connection is 40mbps
ramshanker··on Repairs of leaning San Francisco skyscraper on hold
This is a necessary trade off between the probability of extreme high intensity earthquake and economy of structural design. That is why we civil engineers call buildings “earthquake resistant” instead of “earthquake proof”.
ramshanker··on Discontinuing FlickType Keyboard for iPhone
This problem is almost solved by UPI payment service in India. All payments need manual approval. Credit/Debit card not required to be added here. Apple was forced to add UPI payment because that’s what people use here. I will trade the payment safety anytime over whatever convenience credit cards offer for auto debit recurring transactions.
ramshanker··on Powering the Lunar Base
There must be a redundancy of minimum 2 independent cables though. Can’t risk losing power with any single fault event.
ramshanker··on Trying to extract Widewine key: A journey to failure
So in the end, Widevine complexity won. For now. I have always thought that obfuscation is easier to undo. It is the underlying MATH which is difficult. The best anti-cheat are Math heavy than the instruction trickery. Though both are present simultaneously.
ramshanker··on How Dwarf Fortress is built
WinRar 40 day trial, It is.
ramshanker··on AWS now allows customers to pay for their usage in advance
If not possible to cap price, starting with the capacity limiter on S3 and bandwidth limit at VPC level would do.

The possibility that someone flood the server even for static resources causing bandwidth spiked Bill is scary.

ramshanker··on Is This Prime?
Game over

1 is non-prime by definition.

You correctly sorted 17 numbers.

ramshanker··on Facebook plans to pay creators $1B to use its products
Meanwhile Twitch has locked in many of the creators with 24 Hrs platform exclusivity. High viewership count twitch streamers are not going to risk their twitch partnership status because Facebook is offering some subsidy.
ramshanker··on India bans MasterCard from adding new customers
Let us not forget, rules were formulated in 2018. Planned to be implemented by Dec 2018. Companies kept requesting extension of deadline. Finally RBI had enough. They have been given substantial time. At this point, non-compliance simply means un-willingness. Whether for political or technical reason.

It is not a surprise-everyone move. Indian central bank is following consistent long term policy. I feel overall it is good.

ramshanker··on Crazy Conclusions in Early Childhood
I blogged about myself-8-year-old memory when I was 17 (Year 2006).

TLDR was >>> The only way of becoming a king is to learn more and more MATHS. I associated Kings with some sort of personality who is very-very good at maths , whose question no one can solve in his empire except him . <<< :D

ramshanker··on North Carolina tells retired engineer he can't talk about engineering
It’s a US thing I believe . In india, I don’t need to obtain any license to sign my Structural Engineering drawings. In my organisation, EIL, a public sector EPC enterprise under Government of India, you become signing authority on drawings with approx 15 years of experience. Thats it. For expert witness in courts, I have heard only Collage Professors considered.
ramshanker··on .NET 6 Preview 5
A perspective from a non-CS engineer.

Don't intend to undermine the progress being made. Nevertheless here I am, migrating my dot net core 3.0 application back to Dot Net Framework 4.5.1 because I need my applications to run in all those Windows 8.1 (enterprise-internal) PCs without needing admin privileges to install dot net runtime. Since 4.5.1 runtime comes pre-installed with Win 8.1. So that is the version I target for all my new inhouse civil-engineering applications. There isn't much point bloating the application by 80+ MB just to make it self contained executable of dot net core version. After all, I need civil engineering to speedup, not fighting latest framework versions.

ramshanker··on The Cerebras CS-2 wafer-scale engine (850k cores, 40 GB SRAM)
Ever since cererus-1 launched, I have been dreaming of Either Intel or AMD going full-on wafer scale research. All the individual university departments gonna love their own Million Doller personal super-computer. Even business who can't afford the super computers would want one if Wafer Scale makes it affordable.

I guess only inertia is stopping them from going full scale on wafer scale.

ramshanker··on My Homelab Build
Buying integrated graphics CPU because discrete GPUs are impossible to find. THIS. is my pain too right now. Can’t wait for the Crypto bubble to burst.
ramshanker··on Fastly Outage
twitch.tv Too.
