ramraj07··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
It was not by law temporary, it was by law indefinitely renewable. You just had to hold a job that'll sponsor you. How is that materially different from any "normal" person who takes a 30 year mortgage with no guarantee that they will stay employed that long? Hell, the vast majority of H1Bs have much greater job security than the average home buyer anyway.

Again change the law if you want. Give a heads up. Or dont. Nothing the current government does to home owning H1Bs should be rank ordered anywhere but to the bottom quartile of the greatest injustices being doled out.

ramraj07··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
No one asks for that obligation. Only that the rules are stable and you give a heads up.
ramraj07··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Immigration is a privilege, no more unfair than all of capitalism. If a country decides things are x or y levels hard to immigrate thats great.

The problem is the moving of goal posts. For decades, h1b (which is an immigrant visa) was a stable path to immigrate to America. People see that, and there was an implicit promise made there. If the US wants to decide not to continue with this practice that is fully fair. Just make up the rules clearly and give people a heads up. Is that too much to ask?

ramraj07··on US debt has hit $40tn - Will that be a wake-up call?
Can someone speculate on how this will actually play out in the coming decades?
ramraj07··on A 3D fruit fly on macOS desktop powered by the real FlyWire connectome
I would argue that this is pretty disingenuous (as is most connectomics research I suppose) since its implying we have a fully wired connectome of the fly thats actually meaningful.

This very much applies to most enterprises. These unlimited subscriptions are only available to individuals and teams less than 150 folks..

This is the SSN in the US too though.
ramraj07··on The other Sean Byrne doesn't exist
In most countries you cant do anything with a single number id of a person. Except ironically the US so youre doubly so off.
ramraj07··on The other Sean Byrne doesn't exist
Why did it need to go to tattooed numbers?

Also the implication that cultures and countries which have happily accepted id numbers are filled with non individualistic people is it?

Have you seen how much college football coaches make?

The world collectively spends trillions training, and entertaining and then watching people kick and hit balls around but somehow working with AI is preposterous for less money.

Even a long while ago it was estimated that every Google search cost google several cents (and that they made back 10 cents). Google also uses AI for search results. Thus its not inconceivable that openai can make money here.

Humans have proven to be incapable of making real progress in science given the effort. Especially academia. We haven't cured many diseases and cancer when we should have (and no im not an amateur and yes I do believe we can "cure cancer". Debate me).

We already have a trillionaire, whats the difference? The only difference I see is that people who were previously rich, but considered themselves middle class, are now realizing they are actually poor just like the several billion humans around the worldanyway.

ramraj07··on LLMs reward expertise
The amplifying mirror is not just a characteristic, but the fundamental driving force of LLMs. With every token it consumes, its primary goal is to understand who you are and what you intend. If you type Hola thats sufficient to tell it so much more than if you type hi.
ramraj07··on Everyone is building LLM routers, we deprecated ours
You cant fail over to a different model though. Even failing over to a different provider isn't always as simple as set it and forget it. For example bedrock doesn't support the tool search tool feature from anthropic.

I was reading your comment, agreeing with it but still feeling why this is a bad comment. It just occurred to me that an anecdotal statement like this is the antithesis of scientific discourse. We have a paper here, trying to answer a question, and anecdotal testimonials can only harm the discussion by biasing readers without adding anything of value to let anyone objectively conclude anything on the problem.

The most useful discussion would be if we all read the paper and critique its methodology or results.

ramraj07··on Astrophysicists Puzzle over Webb’s New Universe
There was never a time when a book gave the public an overview of the universe. ABHOT was so popular for being a book no one actually read, theres even an index named after Hawking due to it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawking_Index

Did _you_ read that book?

There however definitely was a piece of media that captured public minds and educated them about the cosmos. And that was the show Cosmos. The original of course. Not the NDT drivel.

You may have been lucky or privileged in working in high competency environments where the essence of containerization is truly captured in the dev practices. The vast majority of mediocre eng shops do "dockerize everything" but would still end up with leaks everywhere, artifacts in s3, endpoint dependencies, mounts that depend on the helm chart etc.

IMO containerization as a principle has failed the test of making mediocre teams productive. Such teams cargo cult ape on this term and think because they've done it theyre now webscale.

I personally like to still start with "this code should run anywhere" principle. On python especially with uv now this seems like a safer bet. At the least this forces the engineers to explicitly list out stupid dependencies in the reader.

ramraj07··on GLM 5.2 vs. Opus
The important point is that your benchmark is pretty much irrelevant for the actual usage. Thus whatever conclusion you draw is not just irrelevant but misleading.

Im just curious how this is going to play out.. Will anthropic just stop releasing its stuff on bedrock now? Will they try to start moving their operations out of the US? If so, to where?

I know everyones excited about Football and the Knicks, but this is far more exciting and interesting than any sport could be.
