ramkarthikk··on Show HN: Master Numbers in a Foreign Language
True but when we talk about nuances in English numbers, we do have to consider the other common ways. For someone who is learning English numbers and watches, say football (soccer), they would often hear 1-nil in commentary. If they are restricting themselves to just U.S. English numbers, they would be left confused in this example.

This is great. Since we speak the language every day (even though I'm not a native speaker), we do not see the minute details of it.

I could think of one more. 308 - Lot of people pronounce it as 3-naught-8.

When we see a score, 1-0, we say 1 - NIL.

0 is complicated.

ramkarthikk··on How to Email Early Stage Investors
Some people care, some don't. I personally prefer to use @mypersonaldomain.com, that way it looks professional and at the same time, it belongs to me as long as I own the domain name (not tied to a company).
ramkarthikk··on Leicester City: Dirty Dozen or Harvard Case Study?
Lot of factors have played a part in Leicester's rise to the top this season. They have played the same group of players for the most part, who have all been in the form of their lives, a really good manager (with good man-management skills), good scouting etc.

One of the factors that most people don't mention but has played a vital part (also one that separates Leicester from Tottenham, who are 2nd right now) is that no PL team parks the bus or plays for a draw against Leicester.

Many teams come into the games against big clubs (including Tottenham) expecting to lose and hence they play defensively hoping to steal a point. This makes it difficult for the big clubs (they are expected to break tight defenses almost every game). But any team that plays against Leicester is expected to play their normal game and try to win it. This helps Leicester in executing their strategy and hit teams on counter. Again, nothing to take away from Leicester here. They deserve to win the title this season. And it makes every sports fan happy.

It will be interesting to see how teams approach Leicester next season.

This is one of the reasons I don't always support TLDRs or the apps that try to read an article and give you the important points. Yes, most of the articles can be explained in a sentence or two. But then there are articles or talks from which you take away new points every time you read it/re-read it.

Your article is important for people who didn't have the privilege to listen to the talk (like me). So thank you for writing. It would also be interesting to read the takeaways of other people in the room even though the talk could be boiled down to "Tearing down ideas".

ramkarthikk··on Software has bugs. This is normal
It's scary how true this is. And then there are small bugs that come up when you do a series of steps in a certain order which no user will possibly do that are required to be given high priority for fixing.

As for relevancy, I think I'm going to just point people to this article every time one of those issues is raised.

ramkarthikk··on The Most Dangerous Writing App
As I said in my main comment, I love this app. I'll be using this quite often from now. A suggestion would be to not consider backspace/delete/arrow keys as typing something? Because I feel that I spend lot of time hitting backspace to correct thing which interrupts the flow.

Thank you for this.

Edit: My bad. It does not consider deleting characters as typing. Apparently, I wasn't hitting backspace for that long. Funny how it feels like 5 secs is like 2 seconds when you are set time constraints.

ramkarthikk··on The Most Dangerous Writing App
I like this app because it gets you writing. The problem most of the times is just start to write something. When I sit down to write, I have no idea where to begin with. This would definitely get me in the flow. Yes, I cannot write stuff that makes sense. But it gives me a way to get everything on my mind out and get me into the writing flow. I can then close this app and take that flow to write something more meaningful.

I also like what others have written using this tool and posted here. It is interesting how we tend to write in simple language when we have constraints. That's the it should be. Not the constraints, but the language. Use jargon or too complex words and most of the times you have lost me as a reader. So, in a way, this app really helps you in writing the way you usually think or speak.

I think we can use this app to write proper stuff too. If we set it to 1 min, we can write much better stuff using this tool. Also, it would be great to have the functionality of not having the choice to delete what we have typed. Probably remove the backspace, delete and arrow-keys. I figure that I spend most of the time hitting backspace and deleting sentences. If I don't like the way I start a sentence, I should only be allowed to hit full-stop and start the new line and edit those things later.

I hit backspace many times when writing this post. It considers backspace also writing something. Another option would be to just not count backspace/delete/arrow keys as typing something.

This was really fun writing the whole thing set to 5 sec timer. I didn't know I could write so much without a 5 second gap.

ramkarthikk··on The Most Dangerous Writing App
If I had 5 secs timer, I would have also spelled Chuck Palahniuk's name wrong. But then, I would not have written this much in the first place. I like what you have written.
