ramk··on Show HN: See a Satellite Tonight. No Telescope Required
Kudos! Very nicely done. It would be nice to have an easy way to see more details about the satellite. For example, I see that tonight I can see CZ-2C R/B, though without a search I do not quite know anything more about the satellite.

Also like the night mode in the street view. Does that come with the Google Maps API or something you had to build?

ramk··on India to Attempt Moon Landing at the Lunar South Pole Today
The official news announced by the ISRO chairman on the live broadcast was "the last signal received from the lander was 2.1 KM from the lunar surface. Data is being analyzed as of now".

In all probability indicates a crash landing.

ramk··on Ask HN: Pre-Internet online services architecture
Yes, they sound very expensive! As I understand, even earlier than that there were Time-Sharing computing businesses in the 60s and early 70s that charged per-hour for computing time which were expensive. I guess we have come a full circle now with cloud computing though the modern ones are comparatively less expensive.
ramk··on Ask HN: Pre-Internet online services architecture
Thank you for your personal perspective and the pointer to Remote Imaging Protocol. When you say you ran a BBS on your PC - how did others access the content on your BBS? Would others have access to the content when you were no longer connected to the dialup line?
ramk··on Torvalds: Standards need to be questioned
Good point that his style and profanity is intentional. But perhaps he uses the non-civil tone to drive home the point which he makes it clearer in the follow up mail [1]. Especially because the original commit message [2] he is complaining about goes overboard in appealing to the C standards and I think Linus is concerned that other people might think that is the recommended approach when the opposite is true as far as the Linux kernel code is concerned.

ramk··on Computer Vision Syndrome
Thank you, this worked. I just tweaked a bit to run through crontab and added a notification sound for the extra push :)
ramk··on Apply HN: Jam, every student's personal assistant
Thanks for explaining what Jam does. Could you please talk a little bit about user engagement (how often does a typical user use Jam) ? Also how do you (or plan to) generate revenue ?

The potential travel related feature you describe seems more widely applicable than just for students. Perhaps it may be better to focus on other features for the student user base first before expanding (if students are the current focus for your product). ?

ramk··on Apply HN: Jam, every student's personal assistant
Sounds interesting. I don't know French, so could not try it out, but can you please elaborate a bit more on how it helps students ?
