ramidarigaz··on Keynote by John Carmack at Oculus Connect 2014 [video]
If you liked his talk, definitely check out his QuakeCon keynotes and his talk about physically based lighting.

ramidarigaz··on Polaroid Cube
SDHC vs SDXC I believe. SDHC only goes up to 32GB.
ramidarigaz··on Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality
Honestly Worm is probably one of the best superhero stories I've ever read. Wildbow made a really cool world with some crazy superpowers, and then managed to put an amazing story in it. Fair warning, it's ~1.75 million words. It took me a solid month to read.

Another good scifi web fic is Ra: http://qntm.org/ra. It's about a world in which 'magic' was discovered in 1972 by an Indian physicist. The story largely revolves around the search for what 'magic' really is.

ramidarigaz··on The getrandom(2) system call was requested by the LibreSSL Portable developers
The next email in that thread suggests using madvise() as well.
ramidarigaz··on Show HN: Linux tool to show progress for cp, rm, dd, etc.
dd has a similar feature, but with SIGUSR (kill -USR1), and it works on Linux too.
ramidarigaz··on Clearing the Air
Some points they don't address:

    * Maintaining the high-friction surface of the glass as it is worn down
    * Keeping the road surface transparent to sunlight as it is abraded away and covered with dirt, motor oil and ground rubber
    * Huge energy requirements for melting snow, especially in areas where snow, ice and winter storms would reduce the energy generated by the panels
    * The _actual_ cost of their road surface compared to asphalt
ramidarigaz··on The Singularity is not coming (2012)
The issue I have with your statement is that I don't see why we are special? What about our machinery makes us any more fit to be intelligent than a hunk of doped silicon? I mean, it all seems to come down to electrons flowing through (meat or metal) circuits. Of course, whether or not you feel the same way might partially depend on your religious beliefs. I guess I just don't see anything special about our wetware that couldn't be reproduced on silicon (eventually).
ramidarigaz··on The Case for Formal Verification (2013)
Relevant: I attended LambdaConf yesterday at CU Boulder, and there was a _great_ intro workshop for Idris, which is in the same domain as Coq. Idris is similar to Haskell (it's actually written in Haskell), but with a dependent type system, a tactic-based theorem prover like Coq has, and a bunch of other fun features.
ramidarigaz··on Akamai release source to their custom secure_malloc for OpenSSL
The beginning and end of the allocated section of memory (the guard pages they refer to) are marked as PROT_NONE with mprotect, meaning that any access to them will cause a segfault. It's possible that a misbehaving process could jump straight into the unprotected memory, but it would have to not read from the guard pages at all. Buffer overruns don't have that problem (since they access memory sequentially), and would cause the program to crash before any sensitive data could be read (assuming the overrun starts outside the protected area).
ramidarigaz··on Facebook acquires Oculus VR
He's in the lucky position of being able to pick pretty much any project he wants to work on and be accepted. From what I know about him, the thing he really cares about is pushing the tech forward, and as long as Oculus VR can do that, he'll stay on board. If he gets too stifled there, he'll probably jump ship over to another VR project.

I sincerely hope this is a good thing for Oculus, but it could definitely go badly too...

ramidarigaz··on WebGL Water
Yep, exactly. There are a number of techniques that take advantage of this. Most notable are bump mapping and normal mapping.
ramidarigaz··on Poll: Do you actually use the product you are working on?
Aerospace software, so no, not personally.
ramidarigaz··on Generating Complex Procedural Terrains Using the GPU (2008)
I don't know what tech No Man's Sky is using, but Voxel Farm[0] does something very similar (it's being used in Everquest Next and StarForge among other things). However, instead of marching cubes it uses dual contouring which produces nicer results. Also, it was made by one guy. His blog is amazing: http://procworld.blogspot.com/

ramidarigaz··on SES-8 – Falcon 9 GEO Transfer Mission
Best of luck to the SpaceX team! Hopefully they got everything fixed!
ramidarigaz··on Falcon 9 GEO Transfer Mission [video]
Well, I know what I'll be doing right before Thanksgiving dinner :)
ramidarigaz··on Falcon 9 GEO Transfer Mission [video]
Countdown aborted at T-6:11. Looks like they still have some issues to resolve.
ramidarigaz··on Magnus Carlsen is World Chess Champion
Chess Network broke 4.5k within the first two minutes of last night's game. I imagine it went higher but I accidentally fell asleep :(
ramidarigaz··on Fixing Unix Filenames (2012)
He mentions it further down in the article, but not all commands support '--'. Most notably: echo is not required to support that (which I believe means that while some implementations do support '--', a fully portable script can't assume that it does).
ramidarigaz··on False detection on file tcpip.sys
My university has a bunch of stuff in Java applets :( It's really pathetic...
ramidarigaz··on False detection on file tcpip.sys
Nah. It seems to stop even the sleaziest sites (not that I would know... hah). Jokes aside, one of the major reasons for introducing click to play was to keep those drive-by Java exploits from happening. Not much point if the website can disable click to play :)
ramidarigaz··on False detection on file tcpip.sys
Precisely because of that I have "click to play" for all plugins in Chromium. I feel a million times better about it, and it's a very minor hassle.
ramidarigaz··on Reasoning From First Principles in Disruptive Entrepreneurship
Your second link is pretty amusing. His sense of humor never really seems to come across on video, but I was actually laughing at a few of those.
ramidarigaz··on Poll: RIP Google Reader. Which RSS solution do you use nowadays?
This is exactly what I've been looking for. I almost got to the point of building something like it for myself.
ramidarigaz··on SpaceX Launch - Official Webcast
Interesting post from the spacex subreddit. It looks like we might get to see a recording of the first stage return (if it works).

ramidarigaz··on Google and Samsung soar into list of top 10 Linux contributors
Do you have any data to back up that feeling?
ramidarigaz··on Robot Car Wars: Nissan Jumps Into the Fray With Driverless Car by 2020
I don't think the two technologies are mutually exclusive.
ramidarigaz··on Tesla Model S achieves best safety rating of any car ever tested
Basically, yeah.
ramidarigaz··on Quantum Mechanics: Ph.D Thesis of Paul Dirac
I guess that's Dirac for you. Unbelievably brilliant.
ramidarigaz··on Faster Than the Speed of Light?
Oop. You're right. I overlooked that. I put about 2 minutes into the illustration and didn't think it over very much (I probably should have).

I was mostly responding to TomGullen's confusion about the GP's statement, rather than trying to paint a super-accurate picture.

ramidarigaz··on Faster Than the Speed of Light?
Here's an illustration, if it helps: http://imgur.com/YrlKW4Z

The length of the red arrow is always the same. When your velocity is zero, your "time speed" is 1.0. As you begin to move faster, the arrow tilts towards the X axis, decreasing your "time speed".
