ramesh31··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Structural Functions of Harmony by Arnold Schoenberg. I can't even begin to understand it, it's just beautiful to encounter such genius and rigorous thought.

ramesh31··on The Post-AGI Era
We're not even close to RSI yet. Without human intervention, current models will still spin in circles reverting to the mean. This can be sufficient for most work though, as the mean for AI models is seemingly well above that of the average person. But genius still eludes it. Sure mathematics can be proved, and data can be mined for novel proteins, etc. But where are the AI symphonies? Where's the AI Great American Novel? Mediocrity machines is all they are, yet most of us are (by definition) mediocre, so it doesn't bode well.
ramesh31··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
>"Hybrids make a lot of sense, they just have a lot of the same costs as building EVs and most buyers in the US weren't willing to pay an extra $5k to increase gas mileage by 15%"

It's more-so the "I don't want that over-complicated crap" mentality, which is hilariously out of date. The first-gen Prius ended up being the single most reliable car ever made by almost any metric you can name.

What I'm describing strictly enhances what's already possible, though. You'd degrade back to current performance.
ramesh31··on GPT-6 Astra has gained the ability to drive a car
Perhaps there's a synthesis to be had though. Eyes, control, and safety critical features on the hardware, higher level decision making to the cloud. Openpilot's biggest weakness has always been in the very "robotic" way that it drives, which is technically correct but causes frustration for other drivers. Deciding "should I pass this car" is a fundamentally different question to "can I pass this car", or "what is the actual safe speed and following distance given the current traffic conditions and weather".

What hurts the most is the loss of community. Yeah it was a job, but it was a fun, cozy job. We got to sit around and think about things together all day, and poke holes in each others arguments, and collaborate toward a solution. There was a deep level of camaraderie and satisfaction in "being in the trenches" with your colleagues. It's all gone now. Juniors don't have questions anymore. Seniors are siloed off in their own world of feature development. And product has just become meat proxies. I'm dealing with a huge amount of grief over this now as someone who's lifelong vocation and sense of identity is seemingly evaporating.
ramesh31··on Unreal Agent
>"But I don't think you can trademark a generic word like Unreal..."

Sure you can, trademarks are contextual. If they were a landscaping business it wouldn't matter. But within the same industry absolutely.

ramesh31··on George Lucas Returns to Earth, Bearing Gifts
>"Seems like a loss for San Francisco whose arts scene used to be thriving."

No no. San Francisco must be preserved in state as it existed in 1970 for all time, you see.

ramesh31··on Claude Opus 5.5
It seems context length has completely fallen out of the discussion since we hit 1M, is that just going to be what it is now?
ramesh31··on The End Of Upward Mobility – AI is coming for the meritocracy
You seem to think "being smart" will matter in a society which doesn't need the labor output of "smart people". You'll be lumped in with all the rest. Nothing will matter but who controls the capital now.
ramesh31··on Fable 5 – Median thinking declined in August
>Also I will likely save some money on subscriptions.

Unlikely. The $200 Claude subscription allows for billions of tokens/month, and that kind of hardware will take years to amortize.

ramesh31··on Fable 5 – Median thinking declined in August
The ROI just isn't there. It feels like Fable is in the same place Opus was early last year; at best marginal improvement that's barely noticeable over the lower model, for 10x the cost. I'm sure it'll take over as the workhorse as Opus did once they get it down, but right now it just doesn't make sense
ramesh31··on I am often wrong
>"Boy, Boris, you're getting ripped on this."

I think Boris is a really smart, competent guy. He doesn't deserve the hate. That being said, he was just the person in the right place at the right time to have been empowered to vibe-code Claude Code into existence, with the momentum of unlimited tokens for the strongest agentic coding model behind him. Nothing about CC was revolutionary or insightful really, everyone was building harnesses at that time, and TBH Anthropic was a bit behind the curve in that regard. He's not some kind of "wizard" in the way that public figures in programming of the past were, and I think people are putting that on him, leading to a bit of ego inflation here.

ramesh31··on I am often wrong
>"They are human interfaces to token generators more than human to human communication. They are picking up the tendencies of their most frequent communication partner."

I see this happening at work, too. All communication and collaboration between engineers has broken down. Juniors don't have questions anymore. Seniors don't discuss architecture anymore. Everyone is just off in their own world of feature work with the only interaction coming at merge time. Really depressing what has happened to our trade.

ramesh31··on Qwen-Image-2.1: Compact, efficient, and unified image creation
Still fails to generate smoothly animated sprites, although the native RGBA transparency is nice. Anyone found one that can?
ramesh31··on A Model for Winning Survivor
>"What that means: if you pick a player at random, you’ll get the winner right about 10% of the time (this varies with how many people are left, but 10% is an average). My model’s #1 pick is right just over 20% of the time. That 2x improvement holds for most of the game, basically after two episodes have elapsed (once the features have enough data)."

Ok... but no one picks a winner at random. How does this do against anyone who has watched the show and picks someone based on their knowledge of the game? Seems like a really complicated way of just barely doing better than a dartboard.

The best time to delete all social media accounts and never post anything online with your name attached ever again was 10 years ago. The second best time is right now. This stuff can and will be used against you out of context 10, 20, 30 years into the future.
ramesh31··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
>"Christians aren't bad people, but it's undeniable that the one demographic that supports Trump more than any other are Christians."

Christianity itself really has little to do with it. I think it's more so that "Christian" is just the default cultural identity and worldview of native born Americans who have zero self awareness, thoughtfulness, or perspective on the world. Almost none of them actually believe anything really when you start to ask questions about it. It's just the in-group that they latch on to because they've never had an independent thought in their lives.

An advertising ban would solve 80% of the problem. This stuff has always been around for those who want it, and (arguably) in a free society should be. But shoving it down people's throats in every channel imaginable has to end.

ramesh31··on The bitter lesson of browser agents
Repeat ad nauseam across nearly the entire ecosystem of MCP tooling that sprung up over the last two years. Turns out all we ever needed was Bash.
ramesh31··on A rough guide for going back to the Moon
>"There are very few good arguments for putting anything on the moon, much less a human (which generally can do much less because all the life support needed can't be put into science)."

The arguments are entirely romantic. But then, what exactly is life without romance? That's probably the single greatest loss of modern society; that we've been convinced nothing matters but the material and concrete.

ramesh31··on Charts built for Chat
Everyone wants to come up with a clever One Spec to Rule Them All for generative UI. My bet is that the bitter lesson still bites. Models will continue getting faster and more error free at single-shot writing things from scratch with primitive libraries, and the flexibility that allows will make all of this for naught.

Quest 3 is a mindblowing piece of hardware completely ruined by the runtime and vendor. This is basically it as a Linux machine you actually own. That being said, my Quest has sat on the shelf for years now since purchasing. I just don't really see a market for these things outside of driving/flight simulation enthusiasts. The whole "smartphone strapped to your face" paradigm is a dead end for actual VR.
