rambojazz··on U.S. weighs sending 5k troops to Eastern Europe to counter Russia
You make it sound like a cost, maybe it's just business?
rambojazz··on Last Windows 11 update changed all default browser settings to Edge
I deal with it by not installing it.
rambojazz··on Solving Open Source Supply Chain Security for the PHP Ecosystem
What kind of ecommerce damage is php's fault?
rambojazz··on The FSF’s relationship with firmware is harmful to free software users
If that quote from RMS were to be taken seriously, then he should not even take a plane, or a car. Hopefully he'll never be in the position of choosing death vs free software.
rambojazz··on Many clothing donations end up in African landfills
I can confirm, as a guy, I still wear 20 years old clothes. I only ever buy new ones when the older ones tear and I don't have anything else to replace them with already.
rambojazz··on Ask HN: Why are we so at the mercy of Google and Mozilla for web browsers?
Did you try making one? Did you try paying somebody else to do one?
rambojazz··on Ask HN: How often do you make a fresh OS install?
I had my Debian running (updated) for almost 10 years. The PC shut down only a few times, mostly when there were power outages. One day I was gifted a new SSD (I was still using HDD) so that day I decided I would install the new disk and make a fresh installation too. I guess I could have "cloned" the old HDD to the new SSD, but I was bitten a few times with those clone tools so I try not to use them when cloning different disks models.

I honestly don't know how you can live with a PC that you need to format every month.

rambojazz··on A developer forced them out of their building. 3 yrs later, nearly half are dead
As a non-native English speaker, I was wondering what kind of shitty and unethical hacking that developer did in order to kill 6 people.
rambojazz··on Forced to sell chipless ink cartridges, Canon tells customers how to bypass DRM
I was considering buying an ecotank from Epson for printing photos. Would you recommend it?
rambojazz··on Japanese game developer hasn't left the house in 10 years
Because when they get long they are annoying, and high maintenance.
rambojazz··on A bit about PURLs
I really enjoyed reading this. I could feel the frustration.
rambojazz··on Copyright doesn't need 95 years to get the job done
But you are not dead yet. The idea above is "20 years from death".
rambojazz··on Copyright doesn't need 95 years to get the job done
Wouldn't that... be... the wrong incentive against keeping the author alive? (if you see what I mean)
rambojazz··on Show HN: Clone your voice and speak a foreign language
Can tools like this exist in offline mode only? Or do they require some high-power computers for the model?
rambojazz··on Simula One vs. Quest 2 vs. Valve Index
It's market for "office work" all over, does it mean that it cannot be used for games? I don't understand...
rambojazz··on Ask HN: Nerds of HN, did you overcome loneliness?
No progress yet.
rambojazz··on Alexa owners not using it after only two weeks
Maybe I'm overly paranoid, afraid of everything, and wrong... but I've always considered machine learning and AI a probability problem. In other words any solution is a probability with an error (the amount of which is unknown to the user). That's why I treat these toys with extreme caution, because I know that there is an error that is not negligible. Your experience reinforces my idea. Another example would be a self-driving car with the driver sleeping inside.
rambojazz··on We will be retiring Alexa.com
What is the reason, though?
rambojazz··on ImageMagick: CLI for Image Editing
That's exactly my same thought every time I need to use one of those!
rambojazz··on Pixel sent to Google for replacement. They used it to post wife's nudes online
Post has been deleted. Can somebody explain what happened exactly? I have a hard time believing Google posted nudes on social media and stole money from him.
rambojazz··on What impossible meant to Richard Feynman
TL;DR: “Wow! Here is something amazing that contradicts what we would normally expect to be true. This is worth understanding!”

I don't think this is exclusive to Feynman, or surprising at all. I know for example my friends and I have used this "meaning" since forever, and I'm sure we are not the only ones.

rambojazz··on 90% of Black Friday deals were the same price or cheaper six months before
Things don't necessarily have the best price when you need them.
rambojazz··on Koreans react to startling results in Pew "what makes life meaningful" poll
This looks like a wishlist, ranked by what people desire the most (but don't have).
rambojazz··on Winamp source code leak
Unfortunately the Archive link does not archive all the files in the repo.
rambojazz··on Low interest rates in advanced countries have pushed money into real estate
My bank offers less-than-inflation rates. That's ridiculous.
rambojazz··on Overview of new features in Apache HTTP Server 2.6

what file formats in particular?

rambojazz··on Prince of Persia open-source port based on the DOS version disassembly
Where are the screeeenshoooooots!!! (or videos)
rambojazz··on Staples Center to be renamed Crypto.com Arena as part of 20yr naming rights deal
WOW these guys are going all-in on advertising. I see them everywhere, from soccer to F1. Makes me wonder if they're investing more on ads than on their products?
rambojazz··on Selecting a programming language can be a form of premature optimization
Granted, people come from different backgrounds, and "the right tool for the right job" always applies. But it's undeniable that generally speaking, ie. not considering any specific cases or requirements, some languages are definitely more productive than others.
rambojazz··on Recursive image rotation (2020) [video]
I guess this is a nice example of why multimedia people benefit tremendously from high parallelization.
