ramblerman··on Show HN: Claude Composer
I think this is about trademark not IP
ramblerman··on Vision Language Models Are Biased
What do you genuinely think they built upon from your paper?

If anything, the presentation of their results in such an accessible format next to the paper should be commended.

ramblerman··on Younger generations less likely to have dementia, study suggests
one got it from smoking, and the other 2 got it from not smoking
ramblerman··on Younger generations less likely to have dementia, study suggests
Can't tell from ur comment, but for the people that didn't read the article this is comparing people born in ~1890 to those born in ~1940
ramblerman··on Queer in the country: Why some LGBTQ Americans prefer rural life to urban
Sry but that pedantic correction is what sounds ridiculous.

You even understood him since you said “what u actually mean”

It’s exactly this kind of moral preachery nonsense that puts people off, more than actual pronouns imo

ramblerman··on What Happens When AI-Generated Lies Are More Compelling Than the Truth?
“I thought about it and couldn’t come up with anything so this is a dead end.”

What a load of nonsense. A little bit of humility and a basic understanding of history should quickly make you realize that.

OPs point is far more interesting and deserves more discussion

ramblerman··on AI is not our future
Do you think more efficiency = better art?

Genuinely curious. When you say as an artist I believe u are speaking as a professional digital designer. Or are you really producing “art”

ramblerman··on Failed Soviet Venus lander Kosmos 482 crashes to Earth after 53 years in orbit
> And obviously this isn't just the US. It seems many political systems throughout the world are headed towards dramatic shifts.

For better or worse Trump seems to have been an antidote to many right wing shifts in the western world.

ramblerman··on Claude's system prompt is over 24k tokens with tools
There are a lot of inconsistencies like that.

- (2 web_search and 1 web_fetch)

- (3 web searches and 1 web fetch)

- (5 web_search calls + web_fetch)

which makes me wonder what's on purpose, empirical, or if they just let each team add something and collect some stats after a month.

ramblerman··on Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview
where do you see that?
ramblerman··on How Kim Jong Il Kidnapped a Director, Made a Cult Hit Godzilla Knockoff (2015)
> shows a lack of appreciation for context; which is what art is about

Art is not about context. I'd argue the contrary - Art that needs context is usually crap. You see it a lot in the form of "This painting is special because the painter was ...".

From a psychological perspective I agree, there is a lot of interesting stuff to unpack. But that doesn't make it good art.

ramblerman··on No Pay, No Work; Early Career Lessons
I thought you were about to have an epiphany but the only takeaway is that you just never met the right client.

It's possible, not sure how many clients you have had. But over the long run it should be less and less likely that it's always the darn client.

ramblerman··on How University Students Use Claude
I'll bite. Would you care to back that up somehow? Or at least elaborate.

Spaced repetition as it's more commonly known has been quite studied, and is anecdotally very popular on HN and reddit. Albeit more for some subject than others

ramblerman··on Middle-aged man trading cards go viral in rural Japan town
You can teach them whatever you want, but the model of the world you give them is also what they will pass on to their kids.

"Family is a burden, and screw old people" doesn't seem that conducive to a good society.

ramblerman··on Oxygen atoms discovered in most distant known galaxy
I don't, Meta discussions like this have happened since forever on HN. And attempting to curb them is a good thing.

OPs "comment" on what should be correct behavior on HN is now the top comment and surpasses by far the few people that he is critiquing. And hence our discussion now is all about this meta thing, which means we are not talking about the article.

that is not new

ramblerman··on Married men three times more likely to be obese than unmarried men, says study
I feel like the outcome you are hoping for is that it's ok to be fat at 50.

Maybe it is, but I'm not sure what part of the study you feel you are discrediting.

ramblerman··on I've been using Claude Code for a couple of days
lol - I thought the same, but the charitable take after looking at the user's profile is that he is a journalist, and not tech savvy.

So I understand his request as more along the lines of, can you explain this in a way that I understand it. For which summarization is the wrong phrasing.

ie.. It seems trivial on hacker news, but that post would be pure giberish for most of our parents.

ramblerman··on Do you want to be doing this when you're 50? (2012)
> Every age, every culture, every ethos and tradition has its own style, its own varieties of gentleness and harshness, of beauty and cruelty. Each age takes certain kinds of suffering for granted, patiently accepts certain evils. Human life becomes a true hell only when two ages, two cultures, and religions overlap. Someone from the Graeco-Roman world, forced to live in the Middle Ages, would have died a miserable death, just as a savage would in our civilized world. There are times when an entire generation is caught between two eras, two styles of life, so that it loses all sense of morality, security, and innocence. A man like Nietzsche had to endure our present misery more than a generation ahead of his time. Today, thousands endure what he suffered alone and without understanding.” — steppenwolf
ramblerman··on Meta claims torrenting pirated books isn't illegal without proof of seeding
Maybe, but getting arrested with the FBI involved is a pretty traumatic event for a citizen. Having your company's lawyers mail back and forth with the DoJ less so.
ramblerman··on South Korea bans new DeepSeek AI downloads
But you added that framing - this article is about South Korea.

And if you don't understand why South Korea might have concerns about it's big neighbour China and consider them a bad actor, well .... maybe your simplistic view of good and bad countries is a representation of your own world view.

Not affiliated but 3 months in and I feel my math foundations are finally solidifying into something that will allow me to build into areas previously out of reach

ramblerman··on Recent results show that LLMs struggle with compositional tasks
I get the sentiment, but I actually think some skepticism in the system is healthy.

Billions are flowing towards LLMS, and Sam Altman will overpromise AGI is just around the corner and the days of jobs are gone to fill his coffers to anyone that will listen.

Additionally if we begin to use these things in real production environments where mistakes matters, knowing the exact limitations is key.

None of this takes away from the fact that these are exciting times.

ramblerman··on Ask HN: Can we just admit we want to replace jobs with AI?
> but what you need to be thinking is "everyone loses their job".

People realize the end goal, but it's naive to think that will happen overnight.

The road there could get really messy, with a lot of wealth redistribution while a few still hang on to their jobs. Not to mention the truly dystopian scenario where a few companies hold all the compute (and power).

ramblerman··on Leaked Meta Rules: Users Are Free to Post "Mexican Immigrants Are Trash"
One of the examples offered as outrageous is that people on meta are now allowed to say

- "Trans people are immoral"

It's not something I agree with, but any hardline christian or muslim would take that position quite easily. And that's not a small portion of the world population (easily > 1 billion).

Is it not better that they can say that, and hence a discussion can be had. And if no discussion arises, at the very least people make their positions clear, and we know who stands where.

The Utopia the intercept (and previous policy) seemed to desire was that we just pretended this was not a position people held, and it would somehow magically go away.

ramblerman··on Mark Zuckerberg: Fact-checking on Meta is too "politically biased"
community notes often (at least on x) provide a link, some commentary and then it's up to you to make up your own mind.

Personally I find that 10x better than someone just deciding I shouldn't be seeing this.

ramblerman··on Tomatoes Were Considered Sinful – Until the Salem Tomato Trial of 1820 (2019)
I realize most people here have adblockers turned on, but it's dystopian what this article looks like without it.

It's literally a paragraph per full horizontal banner. Not to mention the side banners.

I almost feel like this submission should be discarded just for that.

ramblerman··on A messy experiment that changed how I think about AI code analysis
OP brought a rational argument, you didn't. It sounds like you are defending your optimism with emotion.

> We are groking how to utilize them.

Indeed.

ramblerman··on Why OpenAI's Structure Must Evolve to Advance Our Mission
It moves the goalposts a lot closer for them to proclaim AGI in the near future. By that definition an autononomous car is also AGI.
ramblerman··on That's not an abstraction, that's a layer of indirection
> Don't marry your display code to your business logic.

> It's the reason I never went for JSX or other frameworks that put logical code into templates or things like that

That's not mixing business logic with display code, your confusing (or conflating) 2 entirely different things here.

ramblerman··on Parents of OpenAI Whistleblower Don't Believe He Died by Suicide, Order Autopsy
If a hacker just went against the official narrative as a knee jerk reaction that would make them more like a rebellious teenager no?

In a sense you are agreeing that this as tragic as it is probable needs no further discussion
