I wanna say reddit? But it's a mix of things, some users come from chatgpt, some from searching for competitors on google.

I don't do marketing (I do a post on reddit once in 3 months or so for updates, but it doesn't get that much traction). Feel like it's word of mouth. Some of the early users told more people they knew, and they did the same.

Now a ton of customers bring the name up in their reddit threads (like you did here), and that's generally it.

I'd love for conversions to be higher compared to the install count, but it's still healthy for an indie project with a relatively higher price point (people are too used to free, or $19 products).

Ah the fast pace of updates is because I quit my startup job to go full time on this since last September! So it's a day job for me now, which means I don't need to only spend a few hours per weekend, and thus can get to my backlog faster!

As for revenue, it did give me enough confidence to quit my day job (was pretty well paid for my country), and Octarine since the past 3 months, has exceeded that as well :)

Octarine dev here! Unfortunately the app doesn't work for the web given the architectural decisions.

Also the app's been around for over 3 years now, and isn't vibe coded (since I saw it in this thread around vibe coding apps).

Open to any feedback if you've been using it for a while

rajatkulk··on Show HN: I built a fast, minimal Dota 2 counter tool to help me learn the game
As someone who's played the game since the Beta and the AllStars maps in Frozen Throne, love when anything related to dotes shows up.

Haven't checked the repo, but guessing you using the opendota apis? Anything that you do different compared to dotabuff/opendota?

In the counter pick, would love if you could enter a match ID to prefill data, and then see what could've been a better pick? Last picked Ember but was countered by the enemy picking Ursa on their last pick. Given the rest of the draft would a different hero would be better?

Shamelessly plugging my app Octarine (https://octarine.app) for users that may want a more WYSIWYG editing experience while storing all notes on device in markdown, which is also written in Rust (Tauri), and NOT vibe coded :)
rajatkulk··on PlanetScale Offering $5 Databases
Um well, they shouldn't have done that. "If it means they go broke and need to shut down for me to keep having my free tier DB for 3 tables and 2 users, so be it, go broke"
rajatkulk··on Less is safer: Reducing the risk of supply chain attacks
Give Octarine (https://octarine.app) a try?

Built with tauri & rust, and is more performant, and doesn't rely on random contributions for basic things as plugins.

Disclaimer - I build it.

rajatkulk··on Less is safer: Reducing the risk of supply chain attacks
As someone who specifically started building Octarine, just for this reason, I understand.

Having to rely on random devs for the most basic functionality and passing it off as `community does what it wants` is weird. Either add it in yourselves, or accept the fact that given your app requires external contributors to work at a little above the basic level, there are going to be security issues.

Writing a whole blog post, and throwing shade on "other apps" that have far more dependencies than Obsidian is weird to me.

Anyway, it seems like you can't really talk bad about them, since there's a huge following that just comes at you, and that feels weird, cause they apparently can throw shade, others can't just talk back.

rajatkulk··on PKM apps need to get better at resurfacing information
A little late to this, but would you be interested in giving Octarine (https://octarine.app) a try?

I try to solve this by running a small embedding model on device, and the Ask Octarine feature, suggests what you may need to find/look. Isn't as sophisticated as Spotify's or the recommendation algo, however it provides a nice starting point, and then allows you to chat/RAG your way around notes!

Here's a small documentation writeup & video about it, if you want to look instead of try - https://docs.octarine.app/working-with-ai/ask-octarine

I used it during dev for debugging, figured to just expose it for anyone that is used to having a counter on top of their games :)

If an fps counter makes an app seem illegitimate to you, and the countless changelog, user testimonials don’t help, then nothing I say will convince you otherwise, so I’m not going to waste either of our times :)

rajatkulk··on Show HN: Octarine – a fast, lightweight, opinionated Markdown notes app
Got it. I'll take a look, but there's no timeline guarantees.

The use case is far too niche to move engineering efforts to immediately, so it'll be prioritised when either:

- the ask quantity increases.

- when an adjacent part of the code is being improved/fixed and this could be tacked upon in the same release.

Thanks for the suggestion!

rajatkulk··on Show HN: Octarine – a fast, lightweight, opinionated Markdown notes app
Not at the moment, but it’s something I use in VSCode, so it’s on the backlog to be brought, just low on the priority list.

Since find/replace works fine for the current use case (even if not optimal)

Figured! I'll spend time soon to have the keyboard layouts not dictate hotkeys or override them.
rajatkulk··on Show HN: Octarine – a fast, lightweight, opinionated Markdown notes app
Are you by any chance on a german keyboard? or a different keyboard layout?

I've had a report before where they keyboard layout messes up, for Z & Y. `Cmd + Y` is Recently viewed while `Z` does undo

Thank you! I haven't really used zotero, but I feel you can integrate it using url schemes? I have a PR up that opens up `octarine://` url scheme to allow creating notes/folders (it was built for the webclipper repo).

Currently keymaps aren't modifiable, but there's an item on the roadmap to change hotkeys.

rajatkulk··on Show HN: Octarine – a fast, lightweight, opinionated Markdown notes app
Tauri - Bundler

React, Typescript, Tailwind, Tiptap - Frontend

File level operations, search - rust

Thank you!

Lot's of things planned while aiming to keep the lightweight and opionionated philosophy!

rajatkulk··on Show HN: Octarine – a fast, lightweight, opinionated Markdown notes app
Either:

1. Discord (https://octarine.app/discord)

2. Github (http://octarine.app/issues)

Currently the app supports 33 themes (3 free, 30 on the pro license). There's an item on the roadmap that would allow you to create your own themes (each theme is a palette of 10-12 variables - border/bg/text/outline)

Hope you like the app :)

rajatkulk··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
Still working on Octarine (https://octarine.app). Recently released Linux images, so more people could try it.

Currently re-writing a bunch of the bundler stuff and how UI takes data in for performance improvements, before shifting gears to building the Windows version!

rajatkulk··on Show HN: InstantDB – A Modern Firebase
Ooo nice read! Since I use tauri, mac would have the browser as safari, and since it's a purely offline app, losing that is disastrous!

I'll move over to SQLite in that case, since that can atleast be persisted! Thanks!

rajatkulk··on Show HN: InstantDB – A Modern Firebase
I'm a bit naive here, so asking a stupid question. I have an `offline only` app where I read things from the file system (markdown) and currently store them in a redux state for accessing filepaths and ids.

I've been planning to move to indexedDb using dexie for kinda the same use case of easier transaction, not maintaining a huge redux state (16k lines or so), and improved performance.

Now if my app is not supposed to be backed by a online database (single player only, complete offline), would instant make sense for this?

or would indexedDB be the safer choice?

rajatkulk··on Show HN: Edna, note taking app for developers
Rust with Tauri for the BE and bundling. React with Typescript for the FE.

Windows/Linux both are on the way. Have builds ready for both, but need to polish some things, and make the pipeline a bit more streamlined.

Octarine (https://octarine.app)

Desktop only (Mac currently) though, with windows on the way. Most likely will never have a web version.

rajatkulk··on Show HN: Octarine: Private Markdown stored notes on macOS
Heyo! Appreciate the kind words!

- I'm really behind user education at the moment. Have a few docs (similar to git sync) that I want to put on the site, since there's a few automations already in place (like one click move unfinished tasks from yesterday over to today) that aren't really visible unless you scavenge through the changelog.

- Did you try the command bar (Cmd + K) should bring it up, that should give you access to almost all settings/navigation/actions in the app. The setting button was actually outside below Attachments, but I moved it under the workspace button (which I feel now is a poor choice, since there's no place to immediately find it)

But great feedback! I'll try to address them in the next release, along with some cool stuff!

Feel free to email me, or drop a message in the discord if you have more requests/issues/anything!

Maker here!

Feel free to ask questions about roadmap, pricing, feature requests or anything in general!

rajatkulk··on Show HN: Yack – macOS wrapper for ChatGPT built with Rust
Thanks for the vote of confidence. Also yeah it won't brick, since it'll just be lifetime.

Which is why I want to only start charging when the features listed are all on prod, so that it atleast would seem like I'm selling a feature filled product, and anything new is just a bonus.

rajatkulk··on Show HN: Yack – macOS wrapper for ChatGPT built with Rust
Created a page[0] to signify the stance on pricing, so users aren't hit with a curveball.

Thanks for the suggestion! And would like to know how best to ask folks about this, since I don't take your emails or any info when downloading the app currently

rajatkulk··on Show HN: Yack – macOS wrapper for ChatGPT built with Rust
Hey! I agree how it can be suspicious, but I'm still between crossroads on how to price this. Pricing won't come anytime soon, till all the `Coming Soon` things are on prod (since I wouldn't like to sell on the promise), but when it does come out, it won't be a SaaS pricing that's for sure.

It'd be either 29$/39$ one time pricing that gets you for now want to say 1 year of updates (but unsure if that's the right way, could just be lifetime), with you bringing your own key, so that you can manage OpenAI pricing.

Does that sound fair?

The thing about copying the entire stitches[1] site, is that you still have their copy in your site. "Full featured Styling library".

Please have some original idea.
