raindropm··on Write a Letter to the Future
Today I just received email that I wrote to myself 2 years ago from FutureMe in my inbox,...and I think I should write about this classic service(they operate since 2002!)

I use FutureMe as tool to reflect on my (past)thought, idea, worldview, etc. or to catch up on some topic that interest me(say, new upcoming product)

Its simplicity is what appeal to me. You just write what's in your head, sent it and just forget about it. Time flies and one day you'll get a little surprise in your inbox. It's surprisingly good tool for brain dump and to 'resurface' your old thought...

I don't know if there is any alternative that did that same, maybe just any email client nowadays with schedule sending will do, but I use their service for several years and still happy about it.

Maybe the point is not about the service, but the importance of periodically reflect on yourself and your thought...something that's become harder to do in today's world of neverending information.

raindropm··on The tyranny of chairs: why we need better design
That's new to me! because I never ride a bike more than 10 minutes at a time haha.

Everything you describe is what I experience. I have good time sitting on my old wooden chair, and yes, the butt is free of pain (but my back hurt instead, because its backrest is in upright 90 degree angle) also there is not armrest whatsoever so I can't work for long....

well, maybe that's the point, I need to move more.

raindropm··on Lord of the Manor: a medieval city builder game
I just check the dev's Twitter(https://twitter.com/sebovzeoueb) The most recent post(half a month ago) seems like he's experimenting with next prototype of this game! Maybe he's more active on his Discord.

I just start playing Anno series just while ago, so I really love this mini and charming version of it. Thanks for posting it.

raindropm··on The tyranny of chairs: why we need better design
For anyone that have sore butt syndrome, here's my personal tip: improve blood circulation of your...butt!

I bought Steelcase Think six month ago to replace my $50 chair, and while it is good chair with good price and comfy-but-firm seat cushion, it cannot solve my chronic "sore butt" problem. Half and hour in the chair and my butt soreness begin to appear. Doesn't help that I'm the type that sit in front of monitor all day. I know I need to move more frequently, or did some light exercise or stretching, but when you need to work, you need to sit anyway.

Then I read that the soreness is the result of lack of blood circulation, so I decide to give thing that improve it a try: a beads car seat. You know, the vintage-looking one taxi driver use.

THE SORENESS IS GONE. It's been several months since. Now I can sit all day long without feeling a thing.

Note that the version I use is the 'beads mat' with rubber texture on the bottom(This is important because it help prevent the beads seat from slipping)

raindropm··on The tyranny of chairs: why we need better design
>I found youth will overcome a lot of bad ergonomic habits.

So true. You can sit on anything with any awkward position you want, sleep 3 hours a day, and don't feel a thing.

Then you turn 30...

raindropm··on Apple Terminates Epic Games' Developer Account
Honestly, this happened in every section of any big/ semi-big news lmfao. You just skip pass them real fast.
raindropm··on Using Obsidian to manage goals, tasks, notes, and software dev knowledge base
I think the problem with general notetaking is, you take note and you'll almost forget about it completely in a couple of day.

This style of notetaking software help 'resurface' those information you even forgot you jot down long time ago and make the process of 'discover' new idea much easier, something like that.

Well, I mean it behave like our mind, just more tangible, in software form. Also, people forgot much more nowadays because of information overload...maybe that's why some people need to transcribe it into something and relieve their brain's load.

raindropm··on They Just Don’t Listen': SF Kimchi Maker Saw 'Food Tech' Practices Up Close
To quote one of my favorite banter from Skyfall(2012) between Bond and Q.

> Q : Age is no guarantee of efficiency.

> Bond : And youth is no guarantee of innovation.

At the end of the day, we all can learn from each other... Different perspective brings different insight.

raindropm··on They Just Don’t Listen': SF Kimchi Maker Saw 'Food Tech' Practices Up Close
That I wholeheartedly agreed. I just felt that some people just discard the old way completely, seeing it as outdated(which is true in certain aspect) I personally think that there are always old wisdom that younger business owner can revisit, to learn from.
raindropm··on They Just Don’t Listen': SF Kimchi Maker Saw 'Food Tech' Practices Up Close
>>That was always the theme. They don't listen. That's why they win.

You forget about tons of startup and business that failed spectacularly because they think they know better than those "old fools" (also, they usually comes up with arrogant attitude to change the world for some reason)

Tesla is one of a very very few outlier. I have to give them credit for that.

Edit: To clarify things up. I didn't mean that old way is always better, some people I've work with are just too stubborn with their old-school thinking and led to lack of innovation to the point of annoying. But I'm also sure that there are also good old wisdom in different perspective that younger generation can learn from, and not just discard it completely.

raindropm··on Sampler for Mac Touchbars
I think he just means some people just spend little time with it, and with whatever reason, maybe it cannot enhance their productivity like their trusty automated scripts or keyboard macro - said aloud that it sucks. Honestly, the most loudest voice against Touchbar is usually us geeky people and not really general users.

I think the touchbar is superb for general non-techie users who are not keyboard shortcut wiz, and there are A LOT of them.

The thing I found sad is the lack of push from Apple, to make it more useful and versatile. It's nearly the same since its inception. People have to rely on 3rd party app, say, BetterTouchTool(which is excellent) to make Touchbar more useful.

raindropm··on The Faces of Microsoft (2017)
It does! I use the inspect element cursor and hover at any text, it'll automatically show the popup with details and font family of said text.
raindropm··on Why Figma Wins
Good execution compliment good strategy. I think you can also be the valuable wrist that hard to replace.

I've seen people who knows about the theory and have creative idea, but the end result they made is just...lacking?, because they focus just about the strategy part and kinda look down on the importance of good execution. They may know that it is not good, not what they envisioned, but they don't know how to make it better because they don't know how the production process works, and usually have to accept what the vendor gives you.

But well yeah, there are certainly people that just want to be a wrist and not thinking too much about anything.

raindropm··on Remove some offensive/archaic terminology from OpenSSL
I remember my time studying Freud's sex theory in literature class and how there are symbols that signified the sexual desire scatter around the story we've read, say, the male character took his pen(phallic symbol) and pierce some hole in the pink clothes(symbolizing female), and you can see this everywhere in the text if you look for it (though Freud humorously said that sometimes cigar is just a cigar, not everything has to be about sex)

At the end of the day, I cannot help but think that half of the interpretation is just what my professor just made up because she really engrossed in Freud's theory.

That being said, you will see anything you really want to see, if you look for it hard enough. If you think it's there, it will be there...

raindropm··on Illustrated Notes for “Building a Second Brain”
To quote John Gruber — "Mac is the platform that attracts people who care."

Honestly, Apple did a great jobs. They did care about their product(well, until recent buggy OS fiasco) and that attract people who value the same thing. Doesn't mean Windows people don't care, of course, but Windows always give the utilitarian vibes, the OS for everyone (especially in the old day)

raindropm··on Ask HN: How do you organise your files and folders?
Search is definitely faster, but I think both compliment each other. I use Everything(and Listary) about 90% of time too. But I think there has to be some kind of rough hierarchy in place, to make the scope of search smaller and find the files quicker.

Also, sometimes you cannot find that one file you're looking for with search, or worse, cannot even remember what it's called, but with some light organization, you at least have some idea where that file resides.

raindropm··on Ask HN: How do you organise your files and folders?
Similar to mine too. Though my 'Desktop' is my Google Drive folder, always sync to cloud. My real desktop though, is temporary place for pile of files of current working project of that day. I clean up this real desktop at the end of the day, put the files into their rightful place or delete it, just some old habit.

I have some kind of 'shelf' too, but your idea about taking element from soon-to-archive project and put it in a shelf is what I overlook. I'll give it a try!

raindropm··on Seven years later, I bought a new MacBook. For the first time, I don't love it
Another appreciation for BetterTouchTool. That app change the way you use macOS and open up some new way of interaction you didn't think it's possible, all in a well- designed app.

Also it made the touchbar usefulness rating goes from "yeah, that's...okay?" to "I LOVE IT!" instantly. Apple seems didn't really care about the touchbar much, which is a pity.

raindropm··on Stop Taking Regular Notes; Use a Zettelkasten Instead
Part of it because there is new hot notetaking/KM app called Obsidian, post on Show HN* about a week ago and people seems super interested. Also posted a just little while further back was another service called Roam which similar in principle.

raindropm··on Tired of productivity “hacks”. What long term techniques have worked for you?
This is also my go-to technique when I’m too tired to think at the end of the day. I just pick a marker and write 3 things I want to do tomorrow — just write it down with your gut feeling. The feeling in the morning when you see what you wrote in previous night gives you a boost to your willpower and gives you a sense of direction in your day. It’s just something so small, but it works great for me.
raindropm··on Asian and African super apps are following the playbook WeChat originated
My Asian company have this kind of super apps as highlight product, the "hub" of everything imaginable. I hates it with the bottom of my heart.

I think super apps can be good, useful and fast if made well, but most of the time it's slow, bloat, messy, cluttered, etc. - seriously, no amount of negative adjectives can describe this kind of abomination of app. I feel bad for our users - our exe seems to like it though...I guess they never use it.

raindropm··on Ancient Egyptian coffins and mystery of ‘black goo’
or Prometheus. Seriously, never touch anything that looks like black goo, especially in ancient setting.
raindropm··on Microsoft announces Lists, a new Airtable-like app
I hates their barebone 'barely there' product too, but damn, their integration game is strong(in the enterprise world at least), especially all these recent announcement.
raindropm··on Blogging Is Not Dead
Everything ruined when money get involves. It always dilute the value of something into money making machine 'trend' for some get rich quick marketer, they milk it dry(or try to), often in a spammy, tasteless way, then move on to(ruin) something new. What a shallow society we live in.
raindropm··on I trick my well-developed procrastination skills
Yeah, I did that too, I can get away with most of the task with my skill, I'd say it's 'brute force' method. Though I found that it's not really sustainable and took toll on your overall health(both body & mind) if done frequently. TBH I hates how I operate.

I'm trying to create a system that move away to a more proactive mindset about task, the result is still hit or miss, but it's definitely better than pure last-minute-miracle style.

raindropm··on If I could bring one thing back to the internet it would be blogs
I think he mean the general trend of the internet talking, writing or ranking something about blogs is generally dwindled, replaced by social media account. You can find 'Top 10 Beauty guru Youtuber' or 'Top Tiktok rising stars' everywhere on the internet, media and websites post about it, promote it, in easy to read format, interesting writeup, with spectacular pictures in said article. The attention and money was pours into creating that, to make people 'discover' interesting creator.

but ranking blogs? It's more like personal attempt nowadays(e.g. your list) and not really the main focus of internet anymore.

raindropm··on Facebook to Buy Giphy for $400M
Hmmm, 1.6B do what exactly? Scrolling mindlessly through algorithm-curated feed that ensure users always got the right amount to dopamine to keep them scrolling for hours? Look around you, people that glue to their screen all the time without realized they are being engineered to do what Facebook want them to do, is that really actually good for society?

Don't get me wrong, I use Facebook once in a while to keep in touch with my friends, and in rare occurrence I even feel "Damn, I'm thankful that Facebook exist" I can see the good in them, but the problem they cause to society cannot be denied. The witch hunt, the cyberbully, the echo chambers, the life's hilight showreel effect, the "do whatever in order to get the Like", etc. (Ugh, I need two A4 to list them all!) These problems may existed since the dawn of internet, but it is amplified by social media, and many of them pioneered by Facebook.

raindropm··on Facebook to Buy Giphy for $400M
True, but they are, well...Facebook. Their stigma is just too strong to be forget/forgive overnight.

So true lmao, and you have to worry about them for several years until they are strong enough to walk their own path, even then, the worries at the back of your mind never goes away, they’re your kids after all, that’s why I will never have kids.
