rahulchhabra07··on Fry's Electronics 2.0 Discord Server
This can be actually somewhat cool.

Like bringing the Fry's experience to the Digital realm.

Can bring multiple most wanted items that people can shop or like a great shopping experience or even just a good browsing experience.

It can become an experience that brings back all our old memories w Fry's. <3

rahulchhabra07··on Ask HN: How to Build an iPhone App in 2020?
If you can learn both and can do without serving android users for a long long time, choose Swift. Use RN if only you'll need to serve both right in the first 2-3 years.

On the first glance, RN is less reliable and has performance issues. But mature apps are able to build enough to make sure these aren't issues any more.

We shifted our app from Native Android to RN. Today, it gives native like experience, have extremely fast dev times and can port it for iOS as well. But for around six months or so, the app had all these issues.

rahulchhabra07··on How is search so bad? A case study
I have been thinking about the same problem since a few weeks. The real problem with search engines is the fact that so many websites have hacked SEO that there is no meritocracy left. Results are not sorted based on relevance or quality but by SEO experts' efforts at making the search results favor themselves. I can possibly not find anything deep enough about any topic by searching on Google anymore. It's just surface-level knowledge that I get from competing websites who just want to make money off pageviews.

It kills my curiosity and intent with fake knowledge and bad experience. I need something better.

However, it will be interesting to figure the heuristics to deliver better quality search results today. When Google started, it had a breakthrough algorithm - to rank page results based on number of pages linking to it. Which is completely meritocratic as long as people don't game for higher rankings.

A new breakthrough heuristic today will look something totally different, just as meritocratic and possibly resistant to gaming.

rahulchhabra07··on Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions?
1. State of AGI - No AGI happens but AI bots with multiple pre-learnt skills would begin being available for popular consumption

2. Self Driving Cars - Almost all cars will be self-driven.

3. FAANG - Facebook will face Government action, will cease to be the biggest social network, will change market and be a major player there. Some non-US company is the biggest social network. Google will no longer be top player in any major market, but will continue being a huge company. Amazon and Netflix continue innovating and improving. Apple is replaced by some other most innovative consumer hardware company. Microsoft is still one of the top companies of the decade. [Obviously subject to non-occurance of major leadership changes; MS would have shrunk in the last decade if not for that.]

4. Social Networks: Centralized and private social networks co-exist. Data interoperability is possible. The market for Social Network stops increasing by the end of the decade.

5. Politics: Allegiance towards national governments is heavily reduced. People are more active in their local communities.

6. Religion: If 5 happens, organised central religion loses importance, but subcultures with eccentric practices and beliefs emerge throughout the world.

7. Recession: No major recession happens.

8. Space Exploration: Manned flights to other planets possible. Too expensive. Interplanetary civilization is still far-fetched.

9. VR: Headsets become ubiquitous. Developer ecosystem for VR is at the onset. Huge opportunities ahead. No existing major player/hardware company is able to make a successful headset in-house. An independent company reimagines hardware and software, ships well built and cheap hardware, and owns the market for a while. Followed by other companies shipping similar hardware.

10. Decentralization: Distrust in central government, currency, religions, news corps, social networks, banks will be at an all time high. Decentralization will be the popularly accepted and still debated by conservatives.

11. Education: College education stays, ends up being reinvented. Archaic colleges start losing relevance.

12. Startups: Building new solutions in existing systems is a hard problem. Startups appear to get easy and ubiquitous, but the ease of doing a startups is supposed to remain constant throughout history and future.

13. Environment: Companies and governments will have to take more action because of public outrage. The situation doesn't improve much.

14. Remote Work: Most companies allow for remote gigs. Apart from more 'hip' companies emerging, major companies remain conservative about remote work. Tools like Slack, Asana, Notion would become giants.

15. Cryptocurrency: Cryptocurrency enters consumer use. Multiple currencies compete initially; winner takes all. Social Crediting a major feature of the winner.

16. Deepfakes: Applications on it become popularly available. People realize it's just another fad like anonymous social networks.

17. Airpods and Audio: Airpods lead the headset market, big companies happen in audio space. 2-hour non-interactive podcasts don't work, some other format becomes the standard for the industry.

18. US, China and India hold the top three spots for largest economies.

rahulchhabra07··on Show HN: Dating Site Without Pictures
Looks cool.

Supper simple, attractive as is.

Found missing:

- Qualities the person might be seeking in a potential mate; the existing user profiles signal that need.

- The button to go to the next profile seems out of place. Could enjoy more focus.

- Completing my own profile could be a little more nudging.

rahulchhabra07··on Ask HN: Predictions for 2020?
My scar tissue from building consumer products tells me big shifts rarely happen without micro trends.

For instance, macro trends could be bad pr, mishandling of user data and privacy. But when you really ask those teens who've shifted away from Facebook, you realize the case is different.

- Feed based networks require more friction than messaging and story-based networks

- Ability to share w close friends increases sharing

- Synchronous communication over IRC feels better than async posts and comments

What do you think could be a strong micro-trend reason to shift to siloed social networks instead of a global social network?

rahulchhabra07··on Ask HN: What will be the stock of the 2020s?
> Probably another social network - people are not satisfied, someone has to try.

What do you expect out of the new social network?

rahulchhabra07··on Ask HN: What technological progress do you expect in the next 10 years?
Biggest Trends

AR: It's already here big time. Lot more sophisticated commercial applications.

VR: The decade when it finally gets working. Imagine VR capsules where people go regularly to spend their leisure.

NeuraLink: Expect thought interfaces with high enough bandwidth to write, play games/simulations just with thoughts.

AI: Multi-skilled AI bots available all around. AGI is still far but starts looking achievable

Self Driving: Hell yea; Self aviation too

rahulchhabra07··on Ask HN: Predictions for 2020?
> More people will move towards smaller silos of 'social media' like a discord, telegram or reddit group.

What present trends and behavior changes point you to this prediction?

rahulchhabra07··on Ask HN: Who is “ahead of his/her time” nowadays?
I always believed paulg was way ahead of his time.

- LISP over C++/Java

- The first ever web app in Viaweb

- The first ever startup accelerator

- Check this talk from 2012: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9ITLdmfdLI; a lot of today's most impressive cos Superhuman, Lambda School, Netflix happen to emerge mysteriously from the talk as is.

rahulchhabra07··on Ask HN: If you were to start a new company in Jan 2020 what would it be?
> Most people have gotten off FB

Here's some data from the beginning of 2019: https://www.marketplace.org/2019/03/06/exclusive-look-number...

Behaviorally, none of my friends claim to be using FB regularly anymore, posts from friends have reduced, engagement - likes and comments on posts have reduced tremendously.

Which is expected of negative network effects.

> More than a third of US has Airpods plugged in most of their waking day

Quick Google Search shows 15, 35 and 65mn pieces sold in 2017, 2018 and 2019 respectively.

rahulchhabra07··on Ask HN: If you were to start a new company in Jan 2020 what would it be?
My pick would be:

- Social Media Platform for local ecosystems : Most people have gotten off FB; Insta, Snap don't fulfill all utilities of Facebook; opportunity to enter

- Airpods app stack : More than a third of US has Airpods plugged in most of their waking day; can reimagine music listening, social, search

- Cloud OS : Stadia made a lot of noise, US households have enough bandwidth; infinite memory and process can allow reimagining native apps for a desktop. Maybe even mobile.

rahulchhabra07··on Ask HN: Concept: Deepfake videos as a replacement for emails (Will you use it?)
Found https://rephrase.ai which promises to do exactly that. Would love to see how well it grows.
rahulchhabra07··on U.S. users are leaving Facebook by the millions, Edison Research says
Are you sure these are false? I am really skeptical of that.

Could this be mixed w people unliking and hence the number doesn't change?

rahulchhabra07··on UI redesigns are mostly a waste of time
Completely disagree with the OP.

I have enough scar tissue to believe bad UI or even the one that's not pleasing or inspiring receives lot lower engagement from users than having a clean, snappy and beautiful UI.

The OP's claims can be easily disproved by contradiction. If UI improvements didn't make a difference, A/B testing on designs wouldn't have resulted in massive improvements.

Making design more accessible, and attractive often helps beat the asymptotes in user consumption of a lot of products.

rahulchhabra07··on Ask HN: Should investors get a board seat and preference in liquidation?
- One of the core assumptions is that founders and early employees have more context than investors by orders of magnitude. This implies that decisions taken by founders would be more correct than by someone who has seen cos just from the outside. Which means if an investor exercises control over the direction of the company, it would probably lead to incorrect decisions.

- If a co grows and exits, an investor gets a proportional return. Sometimes, the money helps that growth possible and sometimes it makes that faster. Hence, there exists a win-win already for both parties. The board seat just complicates everything.

- I don't deny investors have skin in the game. I just claim founders have a higher sense of it. The stress, effort, and risk that founders take are nowhere close to the low compensation they decide to take for themselves.

rahulchhabra07··on Spotify files for its IPO
I think it's pretty common to have lawsuits against companies while they are filing for IPO's.

Amazon, Facebook, Alibaba are some popular examples you might want to read about.

rahulchhabra07··on Understanding LSTM Networks (2015)
Had been my first reading on LSTM and was so smooth and lucid. I did need to read more literature and code, but a great resource to begin with.
