rahiel··on Coursera shuts access to old platform courses
It's part of the course URL when you're enrolled at the course home, e.g:

  https://class.coursera.org/algs4partI-010 -> algs4partI-010
  https://www.coursera.org/learn/machine-learning/home/welcome -> machine-learning
(see https://github.com/coursera-dl/coursera-dl/wiki)
rahiel··on Microlight.js, a code highlighting library
This is cool, but I prefer code highlighting without requiring visitors to run JavaScript. It seems unnecessary when tools like Pygments [1] do the highlighting once and output html/css.

rahiel··on Moving Away from Python 2
> Python 2.7 support ends in 2020. That means all updates, including security updates. For all intents and purposes, Python 2.7 becomes an insecure language to use at that point in time.

There are alternative python implementations like pypy, and they haven't expressed an intent to drop python 2.7 support. Only CPython 2.7 will then become an insecure interpreter.

rahiel··on Show HN: Decorating: Animated pulsed for your slow functions in Python
That's a cool project, nice job!

The pulse looks useful for functions that take seconds, if it takes minutes something like tqdm [1] that gives an estimate on how long it takes seems more appropriate.

And your cache decorator is also available in the standard library as functools.lru_cache. [2] That one is implemented in C so it should be faster. [3]

rahiel··on Ask HN: What graphical user interface do you wish had a command line interface?
I have this using the "Findbar Tweak" [1] add-on, it works with searching and pressing enter. You can also press / for quick search.

rahiel··on Signal Desktop beta now publicly available
There's at least some work being done for firefox support: https://github.com/WhisperSystems/Signal-Desktop/pull/574.
rahiel··on OpenPGP best practices
Parcimonie's author is also the maintainer of the package in Debian [1], apt checks PGP signatures on packages so you could trust that. I'll contact the author about the SSL issue.

rahiel··on Ask HN: How to harden an android phone
For Nexus phones there's CopperheadOS [1], a hardened Android version focused on security. It sounds great but I haven't tried it. It's also nice that they try to upstream some of their work.

rahiel··on Ask HN: Best way to save page for offline reading?
The "Mozilla Archive Format" Firefox add-on [1] can save pages to a single compressed MAFF file, or a MHTML file. Chrome has built-in support to save pages in MHTML format, but you have to enable it [2]. You can then view the archives later in the browser.

rahiel··on Debian Packaging Tutorial – Feedback Welcome
If on the other hand your goal is not to get a package in Debian, but only to quickly make a deb file, check out fpm: https://github.com/jordansissel/fpm.
rahiel··on Firefox 43 released with 64-bit version for Windows, better Private Browsing
It will block unsigned extensions by default in 43, but you can disable it: set xpinstall.signatures.required to false in about:config. This option will be removed in 44. (https://wiki.mozilla.org/Add-ons/Extension_Signing#Timeline)
rahiel··on Link rot and redirect madness
I was having the same problem with my bookmarks disappearing from the internet. Searching for a solution I eventually made a browser extension to send bookmarks to an online archiving service (archive.is). I then added an option to save archives locally in mhtml format. I have around 370 bookmarks archived that way and it takes 240MB of space.

The addon can be found here: https://github.com/rahiel/archiveror.

rahiel··on Thank HN: for helping me get traction with DuckDuckGo and Traction book – AMA
Thanks for your answers, and for DDG! Waiting to see more of Dax and other improvements. The DuckDuckHack documentation looks better now so I will try making an instant answer for Dax's name.
rahiel··on Thank HN: for helping me get traction with DuckDuckGo and Traction book – AMA
I love DDG's bangs and instant answers. Do you have any statistics on their usage? Like counts of how many times a bang or an instant answer was used?

And will Dax play a bigger role in the future, in branding to give more personality? It wasn't easy finding the name of the duck I see daily. (https://duckduckgo.com/?q=name+of+the+duckduckgo+duck)

rahiel··on The Simons Foundation and Open Source Software
I always felt the principles of science align better with those of open source software. Happy to see the good news at the end regarding funding from Europe: http://opendreamkit.org/about/.

To the author: the "Install LaTeX?" link at the top right is dead.
