ragnot··on Vermont replacing power plants with home batteries
Thank you so much! This is really helpful.
ragnot··on Vermont replacing power plants with home batteries
Nice! Any recommendation on brand?

Just found out about this. Any big draw backs to enrolling in it?
ragnot··on Geedge and MESA leak: Analyzing the great firewall’s largest document leak
> The Great Firewall of China (GFW) experienced the largest leak of internal documents in its history on Thursday September 11, 2025.

Ironic that this happens on 9/11 of all days right?

Probably some guy called (C)hen (I)ao (A)n
ragnot··on Pass: Unix Password Manager
If you are using age instead of GPG for encryption purposes, I've found this to be useful: https://github.com/FiloSottile/passage
ragnot··on From burner phones to decks of cards: NYC teens adjusting to the smartphone ban
It's more that parents are afraid of not being in contact with their child when a school shooting happens. It's not some far flung thing in America unfortunately.
ragnot··on ICE is using fake cell towers to spy on people's phones
I've been following your responses in this thread. I do agree with you but you make it seem that it's almost impossible to blend in now. Based on this, wouldn't it be almost impossible for intelligence agencies to develop human sources in modern countries? They could just trace the case officer back to their home base or just classify them as a spy based on other patterns? Doesn't this mean that human intelligence is practically dead in 1st world countries?
ragnot··on AI Ethics is being narrowed on purpose, like privacy was
If you have the time, check out the show "Pantheon" (it should be on Netflix). It goes into this and how effectively AI ethics goes out the window when the reward for breaking them means nation-dominating power.
ragnot··on My new deadline: 20 years to give away virtually all my wealth
Raising kids to not be spoiled even with moderate amounts of wealth is hard as is...imagine being one of the richest men in the world

I'm sure it was always the plan. Trump never forgives but he wants to humiliate and lure in before he strikes

ragnot··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
Not saying it is easy, but when I was a teenager I moved across the world because my father needed the job. It sucked in the moment, but looking back it was the best thing that ever happened to me.
ragnot··on The U.S. needs a shipbuilding revolution
Hence the emphasis on cyber and (US) dollar attack vectors. War without the bullets.

ragnot··on Startup Winter: Hacker News Lost Its Faith
You'll find that outside the startup, the director/vp/cto title doesn't translate. Larger companies will often write you off as being "not experienced" enough which is often code for "you don't look old enough for this position". Unlike engineering and the startup world, big companies want you to look the part not just know the part.
ragnot··on ‘With brain preservation, nobody has to die’
Really can't recommend this show enough. As soon as they brought out the dining philosophers problem I was hooked.

ragnot··on Lessons from my first exit
Kinda sobering when you think about it.
ragnot··on We're excited about our new roundabout
This really is the big failure mode of roundabouts, it essentially becomes "live-locked"
ragnot··on The weirdest QNX bug I've encountered (2021)
Every developer I know (myself included) that has worked with QNX has a story about some insane bug that took significant effort to uncover. At this point, I would say the only reason one should look at QNX is for cost since it is pretty cheap. The low jitter on context-switching to the highest priority thread is a nice thing but the dev process is absolute garbage.
ragnot··on 'Millionaires tax' has already generated $1.8B this year for Massachusetts
My favorite part about this tax is that it was passed in the same year that the state had a budget surplus and actually cut checks to residents because of it.
ragnot··on The Rise of the Forever Renter Class

ragnot··on World War II 'rumor clinics' helped America battle wild gossip
Could you explain more about how society is engineered to not let WWII happen?
ragnot··on Sell for half a billion and get nothing (2021)
Had a friend who was employee number 15 at a startup that was acquired for a large amount. Net result was that he earned approximately the same as a FAANG engineer over the same time period (7 years - total comp). He was able to parlay that startup build-to-acquisition experience into better positions in startups after and seems relatively happy about it.
ragnot··on FinCEN proposes new rule for residential real estate held in trusts or LLCs
So to clarify, you have an LLC in vegas owned by a holding LLC in Wyoming? Is that only for anonymity?
ragnot··on Due to blade damage, Mars Helicopter Ingenuity will not fly again
I'm curious what do they use then? Seems like using an FPGA for sensor gathering and some guidance loops with microcontroller logic control is sensible. I've run into scenarios where just the sensior gathering/IO can take up a significant portion of the time slice of the microcontroller.
ragnot··on Some U.S. cities are banning gas-powered leaf blowers
I hate to break it to you but if you don't grow grass then weeds and mud will take over. The weeds bring insects and mosquitos and the mud is well...mud.

Letting leaves kill my grass was a terrible mistake, I'll never make it again.

ragnot··on Google Cuts Jobs in Engineering and Other Divisions
Layoffs that don't target whole teams are always a mix of politics and performance. The lie that they aren't is what people tell themselves to feel better.
