raghus··on Slide Caught Posting Fake Positive Reviews For Their Own App
Shocking!

btw, you should really check out submissions and comments by raghus here on news.yc - he's really insightful.

raghus··on Could the YCombinator idea submissions be shared with potential competitors?
True - but that's enough for most people. It is for me.
raghus··on Could the YCombinator idea submissions be shared with potential competitors?
There's no formal pledge of secrecy but you have their word that they won't share your app with anyone outside of YC - and that includes other YC startups. It says so on the first para of the app.
raghus··on Ask YC: Your YC App - 10pm EST just passed, how do you feel?
It is still editable....
raghus··on Ask YC: Startup school?
Just got the ok!
raghus··on Are Y Combinator startups less Ambitious?
I think you might be mistaking a lack of blockbuster success (so far) for a lack of ambition. Sometimes success is what makes the company or person look ambitious after the fact.

If Google had not succeeded, it would be easy to say that they lacked ambition - they just tried a me-too search engine when Yahoo! and AltaVista were the titans. But Google caught fire and now, we all think they were audacious and ambitious to try what they did.

Ambition alone does not guarantee success: sort of a necessary-but-not-sufficient ingredient.

raghus··on My little online color tool. Hope this is helpful.
I like this - I agree w/bmaier that the visualization is great. Often what looks light at 20px square looks very dark on a full page.

One suggestion - right now I need to click around a lot to make changes. To change the bg, I click on the #1 box then head over to the slider, then to change the header, click on the #2 box and again head over to the slider... can you get that slider control to appear right on the page layout. That way I can go the section I want, see the slider, move it and then keep going...

raghus··on Rails - Django Comparison
I especially liked the fact that they did not seem to have any bias going in or coming out. And, they actually built the same site using both frameworks and took notes along the way - all in all, very commendable.
raghus··on Google interview
"I did learn something, though, in the course of the phone interview: that cosmic rays can cause computer memory chips to flip a bit. Did you know that? I didn't know that. I wonder if in my career I've ever spent time investigating a bug that was cosmic by a cosmic ray?"

raghus··on How long did your U.S. green card take?
I could probably write several pages on this, so I'll try and keep it succinct: much depends on what category you file under. Employment-based Green Cards are filed typically under EB1/2 or 3. Make sure you don't let your employer and the lawyer make all your choices. Do some research.

An EB1 filing is the fastest - but you typically need a PhD or equivalent to qualify. Most other filings are in EB2/EB3 which approximate a MS/BS educational equivalent. EB1s could go as 'fast' as 1-2 years wheras EB2/EB3 could take 3-5 years.

These are typical numbers - counting from the day you file. I know folks that got it in just over a year in EB2 and folks that are still waiting 6 years after filing. All the best!

http://superhappydevhouse.org (not the same thing of course, but still useful for anyone that's interested)
raghus··on Normalized data is for sissies
It sure does this: "Makes searching faster" As long as you take care of this little nit: "Have to ensure consistency in the application logic"
raghus··on Poll: How smart are you?
Lake YC-gon: where all the readers are above average
raghus··on Poll: What would happen if News.YC had explicit support for polls?
Polls are worth a try though the quality will depend even more on the creator/submitter than in case of a regular submission.

Feature request for polls: a simple bar graph (esp useful for polls with a ton of options like http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=127203) so that someone doesn't need to do this each time: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p3ZpyEuzg1jyMSQxC-NBM... for http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=126923

raghus··on "I consider this method (Proc#curry) to be trivial"
If this is the book that's being referred to: http://www.amazon.com/Ruby-Programming-Language-David-Flanag.... then Flanagan's co-author was... Matz.
raghus··on 37signals responds to Wired article
>> Second of all, we’re not in the winner-take-all software world of the 90’s anymore

I'd say they're right. The web is expanding markets. The remaining fraction of the market after the giants have had their lion's share is still larger in the 'web' world - perhaps not in percentage terms but in absolute dollar terms. Which is what matters.

raghus··on BPEL4People
Saw this on twitter. While I can't deny that "BPEL4People" has a poetic ring to it, I thought the 3rd paragraph could be right out of The Onion.
raghus··on AWS now uses more bandwidth than Amazon.com
At first it seemed like S3/EC2 was a way for Amazon to use their spare capacity and CPU cycles by renting overhead out. But now, that supposed sliver is a slice > 50%? That's impressive.
raghus··on Arc O'Reilly Book
Should've gone with the Fish for the cover image - invokes the (left) parentheses ((((( ((( ((((( so much more clearly....

raghus··on 2 Questions about RoR
I strongly recommend Beginning Rails by Jeffrey Hardy. I liked it even more than AWDWR. Here's the companion site: http://beginningrails.com/. The author is active on the Google mailing list for this book as well.
raghus··on Steve Jobs - quotes
Here's that Stanford speech quoted in the article: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1R-jKKp3NA
raghus··on $13.3 Million For Startup That Wants To Kill Snail Mail
This is difficult to believe. People are worried about privacy with GMail or with giving Mint their bank info - but are ok with some company looking at their postal mail? Bank statements, tax docs, SS statements...? Seriously?
raghus··on A Visual, Intuitive Guide to Imaginary Numbers
It might also be a good idea to make downmods come out the voter's karma.
raghus··on A Visual, Intuitive Guide to Imaginary Numbers
I loved this article.

PG: feature request - how about a way on news.yc for me to give points out of my karma to a submission/comment that I particularly like? Right now, upvotes are free so I can just throw them around. If they came out of my karma, maybe they'd be more valuable and presumably lead to better voting?

Agreed. This article would have been just as good without the 'Top' in its title.
